Where some Clubs Details need a full page I have given it; alternatively if a Club would otherwise have been split between two pages I have placed the entry on the next page. In the Grading List long names are allocated two lines. I hope you will agree Clubs’ Details are better presented in this way. After all our Clubs are the backbone of the Association; they also fund it. Talking of funding, my indulgence may take the take this edition over budget, but the Association is in a healthy financial state and I trust our Treasurer will allow it. Our President remarked at a meeting that the number of this year’s Challenge Cup entries was very low. Let’s address this by suggesting each Club’s Open Champion be strongly encouraged to enter. It’s unfortunate in chess that results are largely a forgone conclusion according to players’ grades and it’s likely this discourages too many players. (The late Simon Webb’s amusing Chess for Tigers contained some useful information for players facing instant death!). I do hope the Board and Clubs will give my suggestion serious thought. Editors complain every year of time pressure but Brian Skinner saved me many hours of work applying his expertise to the grading list. Indeed I’d already announced “this would be the last one” but my happier experience this year may persuade me to produce just one more. Charles Cronin and Mike Laker willingly assisted with their in- valuable patient proof-checking. — I believe Hostage the most interesting, exciting variant that can be played with a standard chess set. Mating attacks are the norm. Anyone can hope to discover new principles and opening lines. Grandmaster Larry Kaufman 2008 World Senior Chess Champion — Fascinating, exciting, extremely entertaining—–what a wonder- ful new game! Grandmaster Kevin Spraggett Chess World Championship Candidate — Probably the most remarkable chess variant of the last fi ft y years. Captured men are hostages that can be exchanged. Play is rarely less than exciting, sometimes with several reversals of fortune. Dramatic mates are the rule, not the exception. D.B.Pritchard author of “Th e Encyclopedia of Chess Variants” — Chess is not yet played out, but it is no longer possible to perform at a high level without a detailed knowledge of openings. In Hostage Chess creativity and imagination fl ourish, and fun returns. Peter Coast Scottish Chess Champion — With only a few rule changes, Hostage Chess creates a marvelously exciting variant on the classical game. Lawrence Day International Chess Master — Every bit as intriguing as standard chess. Beautiful roads keep branching off in all directions, and sharp eyed beginners sometimes roll right over the experts. • Robert Graham Wade, an Appreciation
Robert Graham Wade, an appreciation. On May 20th, 1919, Thomas Graham Wade, aged 27, Sergeant in the NZ Expeditionary Force, repatriated with honour from war-time service in Egypt, Gallipoli and France, married Amy Lilian Neave, aged 21, in South Dunedin. A New Zealander of Scots and English descent, his family was Graham from Montrose. The family name, Wade, came from Marshall George Wade, the soldier and engineer who led the Hanoverian forces against the Scots at the time of the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion and was immortalised in the original third verse of the British national anthem: Lord, grant that Marshal Wade, May by thy mighty aid, Victory bring. May he sedition hush and like a torrent rush, Rebellious Scots to crush, God save the King. Robert Graham Wade, known in the Scots manner to his family as Robin, and later to his many friends as Bob, was their first child, born April 10th, 1921, at Dunedin. Over the next few years he was joined by sisters, Lilian, Agnes, Betty, June, his brother Ted and finally by his youngest sister Amy. The family lived for a number of years at Portobello. At that time, Portobello was a scattered community of about 150 people with three shops and a pub on the Otago Peninsula. Bob attended Portobello Primary School, a small country school, finished “dux” or top of class, and then attended the King Edward Technical High School at Stuart Street in Dunedin.1 I first met Bob in December 1971, when he autographed my copy of The Closed Ruy Lopez; however, I did not get to know him well until the early 1980s when he played in an Athenaeum team I captained.

  • WEEKLY BULLETIN — 4 March 2016 from the Headmaster
WEEKLY BULLETIN — 4 march 2016 From the Headmaster This week has seen RGS Drama performing yet another superb and, this time, very funny production: Angus, Thongs and Even More Snogging. We welcomed back former student Naomi Petersen—now a professional actress—who played Georgia in the original stage production of Louise Rennison's novel. Naomi is pictured on the right of Goya Verity who plays Georgia in the RGS production. Naomi said how fantastic it was to return to RGS where she developed the skills, confidence and self-belief to follow her dreams of acting for a living. We also remember the Angus author, Louise Rennison, who sadly passed away this week. This surreal comedy was enriched by Daanish Smellie, Ben Silverman, Milo Stephens and Sam Molyneux whose band provided all of the musical accompaniment, with the assistance of Mr Hare. Miss Branston’s costumes re-created the 1990’s – an era that might just as well have been Ancient Greece to the students, but to Directors Miss Hare and Mr Jackson was only a very recent memory. Outstanding comedic performances and brilliant ensemble work from Second Form pupils right up to Lower Sixth Formers were the highlight. Ian White’s colourful, original and versatile set framed the production and his team of student technicians operated the show professionally. On Thursday, the school was full of students and staff who dressed up in some amazing costumes to celebrate World Book Day. The Literary Quiz which took place in the library at lunchtime on Wednesday saw 45 students across all year groups testing their literary prowess in eight House teams.
