2 FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

sked what he thought was the most humanistic of all the humanities, Athe poet W. H. Auden replied “Philology,” the study of the historical development and structure of language. “You see,” said Auden, “every word, when studied closely enough, becomes a little lyric about itself.” Auden’s answer is elegant, even poetic, but in my view the most humanistic of the humanities is not philology, but : the study of textual artifacts, whether inscriptions, , printed pages, or even digital materials. The aim of bibliography is to recognize and recover the human presences in every recorded text.

In A. S. Byatt’s novel Possession, one of the protagonists recalls the moment that led him toward a life spent in and archives: “when my father first handed me the handwritten pages [of a Victorian autograph letter], I felt…that the dead man had touched me from the past.” This encounter—in which the young man touches a textual artifact and, in turn, is touched by the historical, human presences it comprehends—is powerfully transformative.

Students at Rare Book School learn to read historical texts with new eyes and a new sensibility—what the poet George Herbert called “quick-eyed love”— Michael F. Suarez, S.J. to see how the material choices and labor of individuals help to make transmissible meanings that we ourselves can recognize and attend to across the ocean of time. Our students thus become more powerful communicators, more professional stewards, and more passionate advocates for the central importance of archives & libraries and the record of human aspiration and achievement that they contain.

Our annual report colorfully showcases another outstanding year at Rare Book School. Thanks to the generosity of our friends, the skillful teaching of our world-class faculty, the dedication of our students, and the great labors of the RBS staff, we continue to grow as an international center of excellence in bibliographical and book-historical education. Without manuscripts and , there is no history, and little concept of humanity. The history of the human spirit lives in libraries and archives around the globe. The safeguarding of that history through unparalleled education is the great mission of our School.

Sincerely,

Michael F. Suarez, S.J. Executive Director

17 RBS FELLOWSHIP GRANTS & GIFTS June 2019 – September 2019

Mellon Foundation Funds Fellowships to Support Diversity, Inclusion, and Cultural Heritage in Collections and Curation

Rare Book School has received a $1.5 million grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to support the Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship for Diversity, Inclusion & Cultural Heritage, a six-year program that aims to advance multicultural collections through innovative and inclusive curatorial practice and leadership. Forty-five fellows who identify with diverse racial or ethnic communities and/or who work primarily with collections that document minority, immigrant, and non-Western cultural traditions will participate in this program over six years.

Comprising three overlapping cohorts of 15 fellows each, the fellowship will seek to fulfill four core goals: 1) developing skills for documenting and interpreting visual and textual materials in special collections and archives; 2) raising awareness within professional communities about the significance of inclusive, multicultural collections, including their promotion, development, and stewardship; 3) building connections with diverse communities and publics through strategic

18 programming, outreach, and advocacy; and 4) advancing careers by establishing 1 2 new pathways and skills for professional growth. 3 Rare Book School will be collaborating with a number of partner institutions to make meaningful professional development activities available to fellows. These activities will include site visits to such institutions as the Free Library of 1 The Printed Book in the West to 1800 Philadelphia, the Cuban Heritage and Latin American Collections at the 2 Introduction to the Principles of Bibliographical Description: Taylor Johnson University of Miami Libraries, and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black 3 Book Illustration Processes to 1900 Culture; targeted workshops at the annual conference of the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section of the Association of College and Research Libraries; and the opportunity to present work at the HBCU Library Alliance.

M. C. Lang Fellowship Established to Support Humanities Teaching with Textual Artifacts

Rare Book School has received a gift to establish the M. C. Lang Fellowship in Book History, Bibliography, and Humanities Teaching with Historical Sources, a two-year program designed to animate humanities teaching and equip educators (both library/curatorial staff and tenured or tenure-track faculty) to enlarge their students’ historical sensibilities through bibliographically informed instruction with original historical sources. Open to faculty and librarians at liberal arts colleges and small universities in the United States, this fellowship program will teach teachers how to discern and convey the human presences in original textual artifacts, to inculcate wonder in their students through guided contact with original textual artifacts.

The goal of this fellowship program is to re-seed American colleges and small universities with humanities teachers who make maximal use of special collections resources in their undergraduate courses, so that the integration of bibliographical and book-historical sensibilities becomes woven into the fabric of such teaching. Lang Fellows will be encouraged to enlist others on and near their campuses who could help create a community of practice, so that book-historical humanities teaching with original primary sources is not merely a matter of individual style, but rather a central aspect of the local educational culture.
