Keep in touch! Benfica: The Eagle that cannot fly. Sport Lisboa e Benfica is the most successful club in Portugal. The reds and whites hold the record for the most Portuguese leagues won (37) as well as Portuguese Cups (26). In fact, domestically, Benfica has 78 trophies in which 7 League Cups and 8 Super Cups are included. At the international level, the Portuguese side won two back-to-back Champions League titles (1960/1961 and 1961/1962) and reached the final 7 times after that. The Lisbon-based club also lost two Europa League finals in 2013 and 2014 against Chelsea and Sevilla, respectively. However, in 117 years of history, sometimes the Eagles don’t fly as high as they want to. This season has been one of those times. Benfica is in third place with three games left, 12 points behind the leader Sporting. On top of that, the Glorious is trailing for a direct spot in the group stage of the Champions League. But what’s behind this season unsuccess? The European dream. For the past 6 years, it’s been a dream for Benfica to restore its European hegemony. As a matter of fact, Luis Felipe Vieira (LFV), Benfica’s current president, promised this European project to the fans several times throughout his last four-years term. His idea consisted of investing in the young talent coming from the academy and making them key players on the first team. In the short term, the objective was to build a squad capable of consistently competing in the Champions League’s knock-out stages. In the long term, the mission was to win the Champions League again and put an end to the Bélla Guttmann curse. This also implied that instead of selling those players to bigger clubs, Benfica would have to retain them instead. The beginning. It all started in 2015. Jorge Jesus left the club after 6 years to join the Reds’ rival, Sporting Clube de Portugal. He rejected all the proposals to renew his contract and obliged LFV to look for a substitute. The president saw this conjecture as an opportunity to change the club’s plan. As a result, he looked for a coach that would bet more on the academy players. Therefore, the Eagles hired Rui Vitória who, at the time, was Vitória Guimarães’s manager. In the three years and a half Rui Vitória spent in Lisbon, he helped the club become three-times champion (2015/2016) for the first time in 39 years and four-times champions for the first time in its history (2016/2017). With him on board, Benfica also won one League Cup (2015/2016), one Portuguese Cup (2016/2017), and one Portuguese Super Cup (2017/2018). As far as the international competitions are concerned, in Rui Vitória’s first season the Eagles made it to the Champions League’s quarter-finals, only to be beaten by Bayern (3-2 on aggregate). Nevertheless, in the following seasons, the performances were worse each year. In 2016/2017, Dortmund eliminated the Portuguese club (4-1 on aggregate) and in 2017/2018 Benfica lost all group stage’s games. In his last six months at the club, he led the Glorious to third place in the same phase of the competition. During this period, several players coming from the B team became regulars in Benfica’s starting eleven. For example, Victor Lindelöf , Ederson , Nélson Semedo , Renato Sanches or Rúben Dias . However, most of them left the club two years after to play in a European giant. Should the dream continue? When Rui Vitória left the club in January 2019, Benfica was in 4th place, 7 points behind FC Porto who was in front. Bruno Lage, the B team’s coach, assumed temporarily the position. The good results led him to become the permanent manager. With him, the two-times European champions won 17 games and draw 1 game in the league, winning it for the 37th time. Furthermore, Bruno Lage’s move to the first team brought several young talents to the first team. Florentino Luís , Francisco Reis Ferreira (Ferro), and João Félix were the most important ones. At the international level, the Portuguese coach took Benfica to the quarter-finals of the Europa League. After beating Galatasaray and Dinamo Zagreb, Eintracht Frankfurt knocked out the Eagles on away goals (4-4 on aggregate). Bruno Lage would stay one more season at the club. Nonetheless, he wouldn’t be as successful as in the first one. Although Benfica started the season by winning the Super Cup, things went south. With 17 league games gone the Reds had a 7 points advantage over Porto and looked set to win another title. However, three games after the Eagles lost for the second time in the championship against the Dragons away (3-2). A 13 games streak without winning followed that defeat. As a consequence, Bruno Lage was sacked with four league games left. In the end, the Blues were crowned champions. Benfica finished in 2nd. In the Champions League, the results weren’t as good as expected. The Glorious finished 3rd and went to the Europa League where Shakhtar Donetsk knocked out the Portuguese team (5-4 on aggregate). The new DNA. For the past years, the European dream has been haunting most Benfica fans. LFV’s promises of a stronger team in the international context didn’t go beyond that. Even though the Portuguese club enjoyed some success domestically, outside of Portugal the same hasn’t been true. Besides that, the retention rate of young players wasn’t as high as it could be. The elections and the hundreds. In contrast, at the start of this season, LFV’s approach changed. With the presidential elections in October and the criticism increasing due to judicial cases and much more, Benfica’s president wanted to regain the fans’ trust. Therefore, the Reds brought back Jorge Jesus and invested over 100 M € in new players. The objective was to win again the Primeira Liga and be more competitive in the Champions League. This meant clear disinvestment in the in-house young talents, as Jorge Jesus usually doesn’t bet on young players. Regarding the elections themselves, LFV controversial won with 62,59% of the votes. However, the unhappy fans found representation in João Noronha Lopes, who had already been one of Benfica’s vice-presidents between 2000 and 2003. He received 34,71% of the votes in the most participated elections in the history of the club. From around 184.264 club members, 38.102 voted. Benfica on the pitch. Even after the elections, the criticism towards LFV continued and increased even more during the season, as Benfica’s sportive performances weren’t good enough. In September, the Eagles missed the first objective of the season. PAOK (2-1) defeated them in the Champions League’s 3rd qualification round. Thus, they were relegated to the Europa League’s group stage. In this competition, the two-times European champions finished 2nd in a group in which they were favorites to win. Thereafter, Arsenal kicked out Benfica in the round of 36 (3-4 on aggregate). Failing to qualify for the group stage obliged Benfica to sell Rúben Dias for 68 M € to Manchester City, as they lost 40 M € in the process. In exchange, the Glorious bought Nicolás Otamendi for 15 M €. Nationally, the performances haven’t been good enough most season. In the league, the Eagles have 20 wins, 7 draws, and 4 defeats. These four defeats include two against relegation fighters Boavista (0-3) and Gil Vicente (2-1). Furthermore, last Thursday the reds and whites draw at home (1-1) against Porto in a controversial referred game. Thereupon, they might have to go through qualification rounds to get to the Champions League’s group stage. Covid-19 also affected severely the team, as in January Benfica had 17 active cases between players, staff, and the technical team. Regarding other competitions, Benfica lost the Super Cup against Porto (2-0) and the semi-final of the League Cup’s final four (first game of the competition this season) against Braga (2-1).

In addition to the factual and statistical data that make it a valuable reference work, it contains analysis, reflections and debating points which, it is hoped, will give technicians food for thought and, by highlighting tendencies and trends at the peak of professional football, also offer coaches who are active at the development levels of the game information that may be helpful in terms of working on the qualities which will be needed by the UEFA Champions League performers of the future. Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand can only watch as Lionel Messi jumps just far enough upwards and backwards to deliver the looping header which put FC Barcelona 2-0 up in the 70th minute of the final in Rome. THE ROADS THAT LED TO ROME Distance is meant to lend perspective, but it can also blur the vision. The fact that the neutrals who, when the group stage kicked off in September, predicted a Manchester United v Barcelona final were watching it just over eight months later gives the impression that the 124-match pilgrimage to Rome had been a relentless march towards a foregone conclusion. That was by no means the case. It is easy to forget that FC Barcelona won only half of their home games, or that they were being counted out during the final seconds of their heavyweight semi-final contest with Chelsea – only for Andrés Iniesta to produce the stunning drive which earned a trip to Rome.

  • Computational Estimation of Football Player Wages
International Journal of Computer Science in Sport Volume 1 6, Issue 1, 2017 Journal homepage: http://iacss.org/index.php?id=30 DOI: 10.1515/ijcss-2017-0002 Computational Estimation of Football Player Wages Yaldo, L., Shamir, L. Lawrence Technological University Abstract The wage of a football player is a function of numerous aspects such as the player’s skills, performance in the previous seasons, age, trajectory of improvement, personality, and more. Based on these aspects, salaries of football players are determined through negotiation between the team management and the agents. In this study we propose an objective quantitative method to determine football players’ wages based on their skills. The method is based on the application of pattern recognition algorithms to performance (e.g., scoring), behavior (e.g., aggression), and abilities (e.g., acceleration) data of football players. Experimental results using data from 6,082 players show that the Pearson correlation between the predicted and actual salary of the players is ∼0.77 (p < .001). The proposed method can be used as an assistive technology when negotiating players salaries, as well as for performing quantitative analysis of links between the salary and the performance of football players. The method is based on the performance and skills of the players, but does not take into account aspects that are not related directly to the game such as the popularity of the player among fans, predicted merchandise sales, etc, which are also factors of high impact on the salary, especially in the case of the team lead players and superstars. Analysis of player salaries in eight European football leagues show that the skills that mostly affect the salary are largely consistent across leagues, but some differences exist.
