Scealta Scoile! Meitheamh 2015 It’s Summertime! School’s Out! Marymount Hospice Our rang a sé pupils gave us yet another reason to be proud by making a wonderful Confirmation commitment to improving the gardens around nearby Marymount Hospice. Gardening gloves, buckets, forks and hoes were to be seen in action on Friday mornings during the final term, in what is a heart-warming example of how young people can be a force for such good. Aside from the spectacular transformation of the beds and planted areas around Marymount, not to mention the addition of hundreds of euros worth of beautiful flowers, paid for by a cake-sale organised by the pupils, their lively presence around the facility was welcomed and enjoyed immensely by the community there. CORK COUNTY COUNCIL 1 My tenure as chair of Carrigaline Municipal District over the past year has been an interesting one. Starting with the Boundary Transition in June 2019, which saw significant geographical changes made in the Municipal District, and ending as the county emerges from the turbulent impact of Covid-19. Throughout the year, significant work was completed in the realms of recreation and amenity, road improvements, public realm improvements, pedestrian and cyclist facilities and enhancements to towns and villages across the Municipal District. As usual, our continued support was given to a range of community, voluntary and sporting groups, along with our Tidy Towns groups, in the form of Community funding. Following from the successes of 2019, the unprecedented and unanticipated impact of Covid-19 affected the activities of Cork County Council across the board, interrupting funding allocations and delaying works. However, I am delighted to say that as a local authority, we have adapted successfully to the challenges presented to us, supporting our communities through the Cork County Council Covid-19 Community Support Programme and our Community Support Hub structures. I was particularly pleased to chair the Project ACT (Activating County Towns) meetings for the Carrigaline and Passage West, tasked with supporting activities that will boost economic recovery, increase footfall, and facilitate social distancing to make our towns safer places for our elderly and vulnerable residents. I have been proud to serve as chair of this Municipal District over the past year, and wish to thank my fellow committee members and Cork County Council staff whom I have worked closely with over the past year.

What good is there in knowing all about the past. All I could do was quote Cicero "to die not knowing what happened before you were born, is to remain perpetually a child" I believe there is a connection between happiness and heritage. If you learn from the past, and appreciate where you are living now, where you have put down roots now, you create well-being within yourself. It doesn’t have to be where you were born. If you reminisce with laudable pride, not egotistical pride, about your own life’s journey, you will buy into the concept that part of the past is always alive. You almost get in touch with unknown people who lived and died, and felt all the same emotions and feelings as yourself - be it going to church, singing in the choir, tending your garden, playing for the local GAA team of your day, or any team of any sports code, or laughing with friends, or minding your cat or dog, or grandchildren. When you stand at the front door of the church after mass, and gaze for a moment down towards the Mass rock in the forest by the stream, or lean over the gate and gaze at the ruins of Ballymacadane Abbey out in the field over from Old Abbey bridge, your head would shake, and you would ask the question, why? Man’s inhumanity to man.
