Mankato • 507-386-4609 We can help! Mankato 507-386-4609 • Shakopee 952-681-2058 CHARITY PROGRAMS

In 2017, the Mankato Marathon is striving to give back to the community that has so generously supported our races. This year, five charities including Project for Teens, Open Door Health Center, Camp Sweet Live Adventures, Children’s Museum of Southern Minnesota and LiveSTRONG at the YMCA, have been chosen. In addition to having champion runners raising donations, the five programs have potential to raise additional dollars through registrations from runners.

Project for Teens Project for Teens is a volunteer service learning program that involves approximately 120 students grades 10-12 from five Greater Mankato area high schools. Mankato East, West and Loyola Schools are long-time members and we are so excited to welcome St. Peter High School and Lake Crystal High School to the P4T Crew this year. Once trained, peer leaders share messages that promote healthy decision-making with fifth through eighth grade students (over 2,400 projected for the 2016-2017 school year) across the Mankato and St. Peter / Lake Crystal School Districts (Dakota Meadows, Franklin, Garfield, Fitzgerald, Prairie Winds, North Intermediate, St. Peter High School and Lake Crystal Secondary) through various methods of teaching, including small group discussions, skits and role-playing. The goal is to promote health and responsible decision-making among younger age peers on topics like bullying, social media, sexual health and relationships. Runners: Ken Essay, Shea Roehrkasse, Kate Cox, Jessica Kirschner Open Door Health Center Open Door Health Center (ODHC) has been serving the Greater Mankato Area for 20 years and continues to provide affordable, culturally appropriate health care through patient-centered medical, dental, and behavioral health care for all people across southern Minnesota. At ODHC, individuals and families are served regardless of their ability to pay. The services currently offered include family practice medical, dental, and behavioral health services, which are all available at on physical site. ODHC also maintains a significant number of partnerships with other organizations in the community that can assist patients with other resources (e.g. food access, safe housing, legal assistance) that help address major challenges in their lives that impact their health and well-being. Runners: Karie Seifert, Ximena Hanson, Chris Mish, Sara Brown Camp Sweet Life Adventures Camp Sweet Life Adventures enhances the lives of young people with Type 1 Diabetes and their families by providing fun opportunities for learning, connecting, and sharing. Camp Sweet Life is the first camp for kids with diabetes in Southern Minnesota with a goal of providing safe, medically supervised outings so children can experience camp, outdoor fun and social activities just like any other child. Camp Sweet Life Adventures, Inc. also provides seasonal activities, youth development, parental development and other support activities for families with a child that has Type 1 Diabetes Runners: Sarah Caven, Doug Lamoureux, Gail Graupman, Kevin Lewis Children’s Museum of Southern Minnesota The Children’s Museum of Southern Minnesota engages children, families, and school groups in the joy of learning through the power of play. The Museum is filled with seven unique indoor galleries and outside learning environments. Various programs are also offered from arts and crafts to computer technology for all ages to encourage new ideas and support cognitive growth Runners: Angi Proehl, Jolinda Grabianowski, Mark Iversen, Tom Weigt LiveSTRONG at the YMCA LiveSTRONG at the YMCA is a twelve-week, small group program designed for adult cancer survivors. Participants work with Y staff trained in supportive cancer care to safely achieve their goals such as building muscle mass and strength; increasing flexibility and endurance; and improving confidence and self-esteem. By focusing on the whole person and not the disease, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA fulfills the important need of supporting the increasing number of cancer survivors who find themselves in the transitional period between completing their cancer treatment and the shift to feeling physically and emotionally strong enough to attempt to return to their life and create their “new normal.” Runners: Mary Guentzel, Jaime Schoper, Chris Schull, Tom Bachmann

27 mankatomarathon.com SPORT PSYCH TEAM

Dr. Cindra Kamphoff, Professor and Director of The Center for Sport & Performance Psychology at Minnesota State Mankato, leads a group of graduate students and professionals who provide participants with mental strategies and mental toughness tips to help runners reach their full potential. Team members will provide strategies to runners at the Expo, at the Start, and biking with runners (“Psychs on Bikes”). Every runner can benefit from a short conversation with a member of the Sport Psych Team. You will feel more mentally prepared, confident, and ready to reach your best. Look for the people in the matching shirts that say “Sport Psych Team.”

CHEER TEAMS

CHEER TEAMS WILL CHEER YOU RIGHT THROUGH THE FINISH LINE There will be several cheer teams strategically placed along the half marathon and full marathon courses this year. There will be so many smiling faces you will not have a chance to “hit the wall!” Cheer Teams are meant to motivate and inspire runners with cheers, music, signs and encouraging words. mankatomarathon.com 28 TIPS FOR SPECTATORS

Make the Most of Your Marathon Weekend There are activities throughout marathon weekend for athletes, friends, and families to enjoy together. But when the horn blows Sunday morning, you only have a few hours to find each other along the course and at the finish line. The easiest way to ensure you and your friends see each other is to plan ahead. Here is some advice for everyone on marathon day.

On the Course • Map out where you will be ahead of time. Check out the great viewing spots on page 30. • Know what each other will be wearing, or carry a sign or balloons. Sometimes it’s easier for runners to spot spectators than the other way around. • Pick a side. Communicate where you will be and watch from the same side of the road. This will help runners see and find you. • Plan for traffic. Allow extra time to get from one viewing spot to another. Get there early and don’t leave if you do not see someone right away. Your friend may be having a really good day or a tough one. • Cheer on the other runners too. It will mean a lot to them! Courtesy of Spectator Guide FAVORITE CHEERS

Clap, shout and show your support for participants-it’s always welcome. Save the “You’re almost there!” cheer until the very end—a few miles is still a long way for someone who has been running for hours. Here are some favorites. • Keep smiling! • Stay relaxed! • You’re looking awesome! • Keep it up! • Running smooth! • Welcome to Mankato! (when appropriate) • You can do it! • Way to go! • Way to wheel! • You rock! • Way to run! • Stay strong! • One stride at a time! • Call out something unique about a runner • Way to focus! (bib#, the color or a logo on their shirt, etc)

In addition to shouting your support, bring along cowbells, tambourines, thunder sticks or homemade signs. Many cheering supplies are available from sponsors at the Expo. Please be respectful of private and public property and dispose of your cheering materials appropriately.
