The Knights racked up 12 fall wins on the night winning 13 of 17 total matchups between W.H.M.S., the Redbirds and the Titans. “That was a good way to start the season”, Andy Toye, the Knights middle school head coach said following the tri-meet. “We saw some good things tonight, but we also saw some things that we need to work on. The boys were aggressive which is a positive.” In the opening dual with Loudonville, the Knights exploded out to a 60 – 0 lead through the 134 lbs. class thanks to fall wins from Jack Welsh (80 lbs.), Tyler Masters (98 lbs.), Walker Uhl (104 lbs.), and Hunter Bowling (110 lbs.) plus 6 Redbird forfeits. Loudonville would get on the board with wins at 142 lbs. and 150 lbs., but West Holmes would win at 160 lbs. by forfeit and a hard fought 4 – 3 decision win by Chase Middlesworth (245 lbs.) to close the scoring. With Wooster Triway forfeits at 80 lbs. and 86 lbs. the Knights were quickly up 12 – 0 to start off their dual against the Titans. That lead swelled to 36 – 0 after fall wins from Cael Woods (92 lbs.), Masters, Uhl and Bowling. Wooster Triway got on the board with a fall win at 116 lbs., but W.H.M.S. would get four more fall wins – Jarek Snow (122 lbs.), Nick 1 Morris (128 lbs.), Bryce Hunt (134 lbs.) and Braden Myers (142 lbs.) – and a forfeit wins for Hayden Baker (150 lbs.) and Middlesworth (205 lbs.) to close out the dual. For their double pin nights, coach Toye handed the Knights Middle School Wrestling ‘Hammer of the Week’ Award to Tyler Masters, Walker Uhl and Hunter Bowling. Picking up exhibition match wins for the Knights were Sean Over, Kendel Weber, Gavin Harter, and Gavin Greer – all by fall. In the dual between Loudonville and Wooster Triway, the Redbirds topped the Titans 39 – 28. West Holmes will be looking to avenge their 39 – 29 loss to the Huskies last year, and will be looking to break a three-year losing streak to arch-rival Waynedale. The Golden Bears topped the Knights 42 – 30 in last seasons match-up. After a one-day break from competition the W.H.H.S. varsity team will be right back at it Friday and Saturday, December 11 and 12 competing in the ‘45th Annual Wayne Invitational Tournament’ held in the Berkey Fieldhouse at Smithville High School in Smithville, Ohio. The Knights return three W.I.T. champions (senior Cole Woods, junior Cody Woods, and sophomore Ashton Eyler) and two runner-ups (senior Damon Harris and sophomore Thane Kaufman) to this years tournament, and will look to better their 4th-place finish of 16-teams in last seasons W.I.T. This years edition of the WIT will have a different format than what has been used in the previous 44 tournaments. A pool- style tournament will be held Friday with those results determining seeding and placement for Saturday’s single- elimination bracket-style tournament. An expanded 18-team field will be in competition with squads from host Smithville, Akron Kenmore, Akron North, Cadiz Harrison Central, Creston Norwayne, Dalton, Navarre Fairless, Newcomerstown, Norton, New Philadelphia, Orrville, Portage Southeast, Rittman, Sugarcreek Garaway, Tallmadge, Wooster, Wooster Triway, and the Knights. Wrestling begins at 4:30 p.m. Friday and resumes Saturday at 10:00 a.m. with finals slated Saturday for 5:30 p.m. The Knights junior varsity will also be in action over the upcoming weekend, competing Saturday, December 12 at the ‘Huskie Junior Varsity Invitational Tournament’ at Northwestern High School near West Salem, Ohio.
