1 Cougar Basketball UNIVERSITY INFORMATION

Founded in 1964 by the Church of the Nazarene, Mount Vernon Nazarene University held its first classes in October of 1968 on the former Lakeholm farm in Mount Vernon, Ohio. The land was purchased by public subscription and donated to the university. With an enrollment of around 2,200 students, MVNU is the official university of the East Central Educational Region of the Church of the Nazarene. The primary responsibility for sponsorship and support of the university is charged to the Nazarene congregations in Ohio, West Virginia, and the eastern half of Kentucky. The aspiration of the university is that academic and student life activities be integrated in a Wesleyan holiness tradition to facilitate character, value, and cultural development to improve the quality of life. This is expressed in the motto: "To seek to learn is to seek to serve." The university offers more than 80 academic programs and a full range of pre-professional programs while granting associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees. MVNU offers 11 intercollegiate sports (men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, and men’s and women’s golf), and students can take part in an active intramural program. The Campus

The MVNU campus consists of 400 tree-filled acres on the Lakeholm farm. The gently rolling fields, bordered on the rear by the Kokosing River, constitute a campus of natural beauty. The university buildings are of Williamsburg colonial design blending well with the site and complementing Mount Vernon's reputation as "Ohio's Colonial City." Four dorms (Pioneer, Oakwood, Galloway, and Redwood) and seven apartment complexes (Maplewood, Elmwood, Rosewood, Cedar, Birch, Spruce, and Cypress) provide quality living quarters for residential students. Major buildings include: Faculty, Founders, and Regents Halls (three large classroom buildings), the R.R. Hodges Chapel/Fine Arts Complex, the Jetter School of Business, the Hyson Campus Center, the Lakeholm Administration Building, the Physical Education Center, Donoho Recreation Center, and Prince Student Union, the Thorne Library/Learning Resource Center, and the Jennie K. Moore Family and Consumer Science Building. The university also holds classes in the Buchwald Center and Hunter Hall in downtown Mount Vernon as well. 2 Cougar Basketball UNIVERSITY INFORMATION

11 Cougar Basketball 2015-16 SEASON PREVIEW MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s basketball team enters the 2015- 2016 season after a successful first year under Head Coach Jared Ronai, in which the program made great strides towards success.

The Cougars played extremely well down the stretch last year, claiming two victories against then 21st ranked Grace College (Ind.) and upset number eight Bethel College (Ind.) MVNU recorded a 19-13 record and finished with a 9-9 mark in the Crossroads League, claiming fifth in the final standings. The 19 victories were the most in a single season since the 2008-09 campaign when the team posted 23 wins.

In 2014-2015, the Cougars featured several talented players including Martell Medley, Bryan Redic, Eric Roby (SR/Plain City, Ohio), and Josh Ashwill (JR/Dublin, Ohio) that contributed greatly to the success of the team.

Medley led the Cougars averaging 14.67 points and 5.0 rebounds per game on his way to receiving Cross- roads All-League 2nd Team honors, as well as being named Crossroads League Co-Player of the Week (Feb. 16, 2015).

Redic averaged 11.6 points and 3.9 rebounds per game for MVNU as he served as one of the key leaders for the Cougars. Redic garnered Crossroads League Honorable Mention honors, as well as being named CoSIDA Capital One Academic 1st Team All-American, CoSIDA Capital One Academic 1st Team All-District, and an NAIA Daktronics Scholar Athlete.

Eric Roby, one of the key returners in 2015-2016, averaged 10.1 points and paced the Cougars with 5.4 rebounds per game. Roby garnered NAIA Daktronics Scholar-Athlete Honors for his efforts off the court.

Josh Ashwill returns after averaging 8.7 points and 4.8 rebounds per game while recording a team high 51 steals in 2014-15. Ashwill’s efforts earned him Crossroads League All-Defensive Team honors. Ashwill was also named Crossroads League Player of the Week (Mar. 2, 2015) one time in 2014-2015.

After falling in the Crossroads League Semifinals 64-61 to Indiana Wesleyan University in heartbreaking fashion the Cougars anticipate a successful 2015-2016 campaign.

While Medley and Redic have graduated, as well as fellow Senior Trey Vaughan (4.9 pts/0.8 reb), the Cougars will be powered in 2015-2016 by Roby, Ashwill, Jordi Mas (SO/Barcelona, Spain), and Joey Schmitz (SO/Carroll, Ohio).

Mas, a sophomore center from Barcelona Spain, looks to improve in upon his 7.4 point and 5.0 rebound per game effort in 2014-2015 to lead the Cougars in the post.

Schmitz, a sophomore guard from Carroll, Ohio, averaged 7.5 points and 2.4 rebounds while rotating at the guard position with Medley and Ashwill.

Coach Ronai and his staff also brought in a number of talented recruits during the offseason. Brett Vipper- man (FR/Mansfield, Ohio), Jeremiah Roberts (FR/Toledo, Ohio), Austin Jones (FR/Cincinnait, Ohio), Todd Entenmann, Cliff “CJ” Bussey, and Cantyn Belmer (FR/Elgin, Ohio) will all look to make in impact in their first year at MVNU.

The Cougars non-conference schedule will feature battles with Carlow University, Wright State-Lake, Univer- sity of Miami-Hamilton (Ohio), Shawnee State, University of Rio Grande, Cedarville University, University of Northwestern Ohio, Ohio Christian University, Simmons College of Kentucky, and Kenyon College.

Crossroads League play will feature home and away games against the nine other conference schools. Indiana Wesleyan University is the preseason favorite to contend for the Crossroads League title, while Grace College (Ind.), and Saint Francis (Ind.) are also expected to be at the top of the standings. Huntington (Ind.) University, Taylor (Ind.) University, Spring Arbor (Mich.) University, Goshen (Ind.) College, Marian (Ind.) University, and Bethel College (Ind.) will also all provide stiff competition for the Cougars in the rugged 18- game conference slate.

The Cougars open their season Tuesday on the road at Carlow University (Pa.) starting with the opening tip-off at 7:30 PM. 12 Cougar Basketball BASKETBALL FACILITIES The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s basketball team moved into brandThe new, Mount state-of-the-art Vernon Nazarene Ariel Arena University on Novembermen’s 8, basketball2013 with anteam 81- 62 movedvictory intoover brand the University new, state of- Akron-Wayneof-the-art Ariel College. 15 Cougar Basketball file:///C:/Daktronics/DakStats%20Basketball/scombined_1.html 11/24/2015 MVNU’S AFFILIATIONS The Crossroads League, formerly the Mid- Central College Conference, was founded in 1959 and is one of the oldest conferences in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The Crossroads League currently consists of 10 institutions located in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio: Bethel (Ind.) College, Goshen (Ind.) College, Grace (Ind.) College, Huntington (Ind.) University, Indiana Wesleyan University, Marian (Ind.) University, Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) University, the University of Saint Francis (Ind.), Spring Arbor (Mich.) University, and Taylor (Ind.) University. The purpose of the Crossroads League is to promote intercollegiate athletics in a well-rounded athletic program, maintain high ideals, and to promote sportsmanship. The conference sponsors championships in 14 sports (seven for men and seven for women). Crossroads League student athletes and teams also make their mark on the NAIA national level by virtue of national championships, All-Americans, Scholar- Athletes, national rankings, and statistical leaders. For complete information on the conference as well as up-to-date standings, statistics, and stories for each sport, go to: www.crossroadsleague.com

Throughout its history, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate sports. Since its introduction of intercollegiate basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained the highest standards while administering first-rate athletics programs. Time and time again, the NAIA has stepped forward to address the important issues of the day – be it racial integration in the ‘40s and ‘50s or establishing the first women’s championship program in 1980. The NAIA has not been afraid to enact changes while others have watched and waited. 16 Cougar Basketball 2013MVNU’S-2014 SEASON AFFILIATIONS OUTLOOK
