His mentorship and encouragement have been absolutely essential, both in the drafting and polishing of this dissertation, and in my concurrent development as a researcher, writer and teacher. John models in his own scholarship how to work with texts and ideas at the highest level of insight and precision, and this dissertation has benefited enormously from his detailed commentary on multiple drafts of every chapter. I have been simultaneously influenced by John’s enthusiasm for and dedication to pedagogy, and from his example I have learned that it is possible, and very much worth doing, to prioritize both. Gregg Crane, too, has been a key part of this project from the beginning. My very first conversation about Bloomsbury at the University of Michigan was with Gregg. M. Forster’s Howards End and A Passage to India, and Leonard Woolf’s early anti-imperialist novel The Village in the Jungle. This interest in economics is even more characteristic of Bloomsbury’s essays and polemics, including Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own and Three Guineas. Mutually influencing each other in the multidisciplinary context of Bloomsbury, Keynes and Virginia Woolf – as well as Leonard Woolf and E. M. Forster – all, in varying ways, conceive of economic goals not as ends in themselves but as a basis for the production of art and the achievement of the good life. They work toward these aims by using a method of inquiry that, because it acknowledges uncertainty, is experimental and iterative,1 yet more accurate

Some actors benefit from public support (e.g. public museums, libraries, theatres) but may experience significant budget shortfalls. The sector includes major multinational companies with sustainable revenues (e.g. Netflix), but many small companies and freelance professionals essential for the sector could face bankruptcy. This crisis creates a structural threat to the survival of many firms and workers in cultural and creative production. Today, more than ever, the importance of culture and creativity for society is clear. The availability of cultural content contributes to mental health and well-being, and many cultural institutions have provided online and free content in recent weeks for that purpose. Sustainable business models during and after the initial crisis are imperative for the sector’s survival. Leaving behind the more fragile part of the sector could cause irreparable economic and social damage. The current challenge is to design public supports that alleviate the negative impacts in the short term and help identify new opportunities in the medium term for different public, private and non-profit actors engaged in cultural and creative production. While this is not really surprising, previous reviews of this literature have not focused on such patterns. Specifically, the methodology and normative implications of the field of industrial organization and antitrust policy suggest a series of stages identified here as foundation, maturation, reevaluation, and backlash that suggest a way of viewing the development of and controversies surrounding cultural economics. Also, the emerging field of sports economics, which already shares some substantive similari- ties to the questions addressed in cultural economics, presents a pattern of development by which core questions and principles are identified in a fragmented literature, which then slowly coalesces and becomes consolidated into a more unified literature that essentially reconfirms and extends those earlier core principles.

    Optimising the Use of Cultural Heritage Christian Koboldt∗ Paper presented at the Conference “Economic Perspectives of Cultural Heritage”, Cannizzaro, 16-19 November 1995 1. Introduction “Optimising the Use of Cultural Heritage” is a title that may provoke misunderstand- ings. It is therefore worthwhile to start by indicating what will not be addressed in the paper. This paper will not give an in-depth analysis of the costs and benefits that arise from inherited works of art and architecture, from the preservation of knowledge about a society and its history for future generations, or from a set of shared norms and ideals that are essential for the working of a community. Neither will it tackle the problem of how these costs and benefits can be measured1, nor how strategic incentives to misrepresent individual valuation can be overcome.2 Rather it will try to analyse how the institutional arrangements under which specific parts of the cultural heritage are made available to potential users affect the welfare created by the use of these items. I combine several areas of scholarly inquiry – biography and autobiography studies, modernist studies, book history, and the history of reading – in order to examine the intersections between literary and textual constructions of genre and the role of categorization in the book trade. My central argument is that diversity, as both the policy and the product of the Hogarth Press, allowed a multitude of voices, methodologies, perspectives, and subjects to co-exist at one publishing house and produced a body of works that goes far beyond the small circle of Bloomsbury with which it is usually associated. The variety of the Hogarth Press’s publications meant that its approach to genre was one of hybridity, oscillation, and ambivalence, but one that nevertheless found ways to position complicated works in the category-oriented world of the book trade. Drawing from unpublished archival materials in order to uncover relationships between authors, readers, publishers, booksellers, literary agents, book clubs, and critics, I argue that the Hogarth Press’s practices in publishing biographies and autobiographies informed the Woolfs’ writings about the importance and role of the genres in the context of literary modernism.

Elizabeth Dickens Doctor of Philosophy Department of English and Collaborative Program in Book History and Print Culture University of Toronto 2010 My dissertation investigates the role of intellectual weekly periodicals such as the Nation and Athenaeum and the New Statesman as mediators between the book trade and the audience for so-called serious books. The weeklies offer a productive lens through which to examine the labels commonly applied to early twentieth-century intellectual culture. The rise of a mass reading public and the proliferation of print in this period necessitated cultural labels with a sorting function: books, periodicals, and people were designated as "highbrow," "middlebrow," "modernist," "Georgian," "Bloomsbury." Through an analysis of the intellectual weeklies, a periodical genre explicitly devoted to the appraisal of intellectual culture, I argue for a critical revaluation of cultural labels as they were used in the early twentieth century and as they have been adopted in later scholarship. Using quantitative methodologies influenced by book history, Chapter One argues that the weeklies' literary content was characterized by the periodicals' reciprocal relationship with the book trade: publishers were the weeklies' most significant advertisers, and the weeklies, in turn, communicated information about new books to their book-interested readers. Through an analysis of two series of articles published in the Nation and Athenaeum in the mid-1920s, Chapter Two considers the weeklies' negotiation of their dual roles as forums for public debate about intellectual culture and ii advertising partners with the book trade.
