Bangladesh Red Crescent Society Situation Report -02 for Cyclonic storm ‘MORA’ Date: 1 June 2017 7 people reported dead and 60,612 houses fully damaged after Cyclonic storm made land fall 7 people reported dead in Cox’s Bazar, Rangamati and Bhola as Cyclone Mora made landfall in the morning on 30th May 2017. Bangladesh Red Crescent Society took led for joint assessment in Feni and Noakhali district. Member of the assessment team reported from Cox’s Bazar that trees have been uprooted in several streets in Cox’s Bazar and the streets were cleared by the local community following government instruction. The Markets are open and all goods are available in Cox’s Bazar. No major livestock or livelihood damage was reported. The mobile network in Saint Martin Island has been partially affected and local authorities can also be reached by the radio communication of Cyclone Preparedness Programme (CPP). News reports state that 50% of low budget houses have been destroyed or flattened in the Island. However, the situation is not yet clear. Furthermore, Housing for undocumented Myanmar nationals near Cox’s bazaar was severely damaged. Rohingya refugees are currently without reliable shelter, food, and fuel, and may also lack dry space to cook1. The assessment team in Chittagong visited Baskhali and Anowara upazila and they meet with UNO, PIO, THO, local government representative and affected communities. According to the PIO of respective upazila and DRRO of Chittagong district 14250 people are effected by cyclone MORA, 2596 houses are partially damaged while 2745 houses are damaged fully. In Feni district assessment team didn’t seen any visually damage by the cyclone MORA at Sonagazi Upazila under Feni district. However, Due to fear fishermen communities are not going to the river for catching fish; it’s causing food crisis in the household which is depends on fishing. On the other hand, assessment team in Noakhali district only found 150 household fully damaged. 1 1 Office of the UN Resident Coordinator Flash Update No. 2 Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) Priority Need Based on the Assessment Team Observation following the visit in the affected District Cox’s Bazar: Assessment Team identified food as first priority for followed by Shelter, Wash and Livelihood as second, third and fourth for the affected people in Cox’s Bazar. Assessment team also observe that affected people need information on restoring their shelter and Wash facilities and active community engagement is strongly recommended to make it effective. Chittagong: In Chittagong assessment team identified Shelter as immediate need Participatory Approach for. Safe Shelter Awareness (PASSA) is also recommend as approach. Food along cloths for those who lost the shelter is recommended as second priority followed by the medical facilities. The assessment team found Children are at risk and suggested nutrition intervention for children. Temporary learning center should be identified to start school education immediately before identify the permanent solution. Feni and Noakhali: The Assessment team doesn’t recommended any immediate action for Feni and Noakhali district based on their assessment observation. BDRCS and Movement Partner’s actions /Information so far (till 1 June 2017) Four assessment teams are deployed in four districts of Cox’s Bazar, Chittagong, Noakhali and Feni for damage and need assessment immediate after land fall of cyclone Mora. BDRCS took the lead for joint assessment in Feni and Noakhali district. Distribution of dry food among 1,175 families (four cyclone shelters) in Noakhali district. Shelter tools kits 1,000 boxes and Jerrycan 2,000 Pcs allocated for Kutupalang and Balukhli makeshift camp. Amount allocated amount BDT 1,800,000 for 6,000 HHs (Cox’s Bazar – 1,120,000 BDT, Chittagong BDT 600,000, Noakhali BDT 80,000). 2820 Families received cash BDT 5000 (each family) in Noakhali under Forecast Based Financing (FBF) supported by German Red Cross (GRC). Total cash distributed in BDT 14,100,000. IFRC launched DREF an amount of CHF 118,418. National Disaster Response Team (60 members) and National Disaster Watson Response Team (60 members) members were alerted. Activated cyclone contingency plan and open an emergency control room in the headquarters in Dhaka, which will remain open till 8 pm every day. (control room No: +88 02 9355995) 55,000 CPP volunteer and 800 RCY volunteer were deployed in 15 coastal districts during the early warning stage and available to support response operation. 2 Unit Disaster Response Team (UDRT), Community Disaster Response Team (CDRT) in each of the branches of coastal district were standby with First Aid (FA) and Search & Rescue (SAR) equipment.
