Sadri ©2009 Chadia Louai ii ABSTRACT The Clash of Civilization thesis by Samuel Huntington and the claims of other scholars such as Bernard Lewis reinforced the impression in the West that the Arab world is a homogeneous and rigid entity ready to clash with other civilizations. In fact, some in the West argue that world civilizations have religious characteristics, for that reason the fundamental source of conflict in this new world will be primarily cultural and religious. However, other scholars argue that there is no single Islamic culture but rather multiple types of political Islam and different perception of it. -

A lot of activities that have been carried out by Muhammadiyah as a socio- religious movement based on tauhid ( aqidah Islamiyah) through Islamic purification (tajrid) and in the other sides through modernity (tajdid) that’s puts forward enjoining whats is right and forbidding whats is wrong (amar ma’ruf nahi mungkar) as a theological bases (teologi al-ma’un). Have a lot of evidences shown in Muhammadiyah socio- religious movement in Indonesia, but the biggest challages is the ability to maintain the existence of and answered a range of challenges that are local and global (relations between islam and democration), pluralism, human rights and the marginals. Through tajdid Muhammadiyah has proven ability in respond of Islamic problems in Indonesia since before the independence of up to the twenty-first century.in a way to do interpretation of his base theologious through a shift paradigm in theologies and socio- religious movement (Thomas Kuhn). In fact, Muhammadiyah move forward with transformation of theological bases from theocentris to antrophocentris (Hasan Hanafi).Thus various issues on religious movement,political like nation-state wich is local or global had answered by Muhammadiyah with his theological bases and the charity efforts like educations, hospitals and the orphanage. -

1 AL-MANAR REVISITED The “lighthouse” of the Islamic revival Kosugi Yasushi The intellectual map of the Islamic world has experienced a number of rather drastic changes during the twentieth century, continuing on from the turbulent years of the previous century. Various trends of thought and sociopolitical ideas stemming from the West, such as modernism, liberalism, nationalism, socialism, and communism, among others, appeared in Muslim societies, and all of these cast serious doubts on traditional Islamic thought and institutions. Especially modernism, often associated with Westernization, and nationalism, more often secular than not, were undermining traditional Islamic values, while profound socioeconomic transformation was undermining the basis upon which traditional Islamic societies, as well as their intellectual leaders, used to stand. Against this backdrop, a new Islamic trend calling for a reform of Muslim societies appeared. As this trend voiced the aspiration to revive the Islamic world, or the Islamic umma (community), to use their own terms, we may call this trend Islamic revivalism. The journal of al-Manar (Majalla al-Manar),1 the main subject of this article, was the major mouthpiece for this trend. It was published regularly between 1898 and 1935, and its intellectual heritage was maintained by later popular movements such as the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and the Association of Algerian ‘Ulama’ in Algeria. The trend, however, seemed to have lost its momentum by the early 1950s, when Arab nationalism and other secular trends started to overshadow the previous Islamic trends. Accordingly, the contri- butions of al-Manar appeared obsolete. “Manar” in Arabic means a “lighthouse,” or a “beacon.” The journal tried to be a lighthouse in a turbulent ocean where all Islamic ships were suffering the awful storm of the modern world, metaphorically speaking. -

NASIONALISME ISLAM: TELAAH PEMIKIRAN DAN KIPRAH HADJI AGUS SALIM Novizal Wendry [email protected] Dosen Jurusan Syariah STAIN Padangsidimpuan Abstrak Hadji Agus Salim adalah salah seorang tokoh nasionalis Islam yang hidup dalam tiga zaman, Belanda, Jepang, dan awal kemerdekaan. Pemikiran nasionalisme Islam Salim dipengaruhi oleh pendidikan sekuler Belanda dan interaksinya dengan tokoh pembaharu lintas Negara seperti Jamaluddin al-Afgani dan karya-karya tokoh pembaharu Negara lainnya ketika ia menjadi penerjemah pada konsulat Belanda di Jeddah tahun 1906. Nasionalisme Islam yang digusung oleh Salim berkeinginan untuk memperjuangkan hak-hak kemerdekaan yang telah dirampas oleh Pemerintah Hindia Belanda berdasarkan asas-asas Islam. Nasionalisme Islam ini berbeda dengan nasionalisme sekuler yang digusung oleh Soekarno dan Hatta, karena memisahkan antara nasionalisme dengan agama. Haji Agus Salim is one of Islamic nationalist leaders who lived in three regimes; the Netherlands, Japan, and early Indonesian independence. Salim’s thought was influenced by the Dutch secular education and his interaction with transnational reformers like Jamaluddin al-Afgani and the works of other reformers when he became a translator at the Dutch consulate in Jeddah in 1906. Islamic Nationalism formulated by Salim wanted to fight the rights of freedom that has been seized by the Dutch government based on Islamic principles. Islamic nationalism was different from secular nationalism formulated by Sukarno and Hatta, when the second separated between nationalism and religion. The Reformers’ political program has failed both because their interpretation of the law has proven inadequate to deliver on its promises and because the instrument through which they chose to impose this interpretation—the institu- tion of the modern state—has proven inappropriate for the purpose. I hope to show here that this failure is due to the fact that the program of the modern Sunni Reformers rep- resents a double rupture with the past: first, the Reformers deliberately chose to sweep away the teachings of the estab- lished schools of law; second, they opted for the state rather than society as the means by which to impose their program. -

If so, then how would this change take place in meeting the current challenges, while also staying faithful to the primary teachings of Islam? Muslims, and non-Muslims alike were directly or indirectly influenced by the “modern” trends brought by the West. Did “modern” values always signify progress and value? To what extent would modern principles be adopted in the Islamic tradition? These were certainly a few of the many questions raised by pioneer figures of “modernity” like Said Nursi (d. 1960), Muhammad Iqbal (d.1938) and Muhammad Abduh (d.1905). As I have come to hypothesize prior to my research, their distinct educational background and context had great significant and lasting impacts in the unique approaches that they undertook in regards to bringing change. As I have concluded, the ways in which they have dealt with these “modern” challenges, as well as opportunities, were not only an inspiration for their own generations, but also relevant to many Muslims to this day. -

Peran pemimpin saat ini sangatlah berpengaruh dalam pengembangan pondok pesantren sebab pemimpin atau kyai adalah sebutan pengasuh pondok pesantren adalah salah satu elemen yang paling utama dalam sebuah pondok pesantren. Pondok pesantren adalah suatu lembaga pendidikan Islam tradisonal yang dimana santrinya diwajibkan untuk tinggal dan belajar bersama dibawah bimbingan kyai yang sebagai pengasuh pondok pesantren tersebut. Pondok Pesantren Wali Songo sejak dipimpin oleh Kyai Ulum mengalami penurunan dalam jumlah santri, dan tidak adanya peningkatan dalam pembangunan gedung, karena Kyai Ulum adalah pemimpin kedua setelah Almaghfurlah KH. Imam Syuhadak. Seiiring dengan berjalannya waktu kemudian Pondok Pesantren Wali Songo mengalami sedikit demi sedikit perubahan, pemimpin dan pengurus pondok bekerjasama dengan para anggotanya agar mampu meningkatkan dalam jumlah santri dan penambahan gedung setiap tahunnya. -

Tesis ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui lebih dalam tentang pemikiran Syekh Ahmad Khatib tentang pembagian harta warisan di Minangkabau dalam kitabnya al-Dâ`i l-Masmȗ`. Baik itu dari segi fatwa Syekh Ahmad Khatȋb al-Minangkabawi tentang harta kewarisan, fatwa ulama Minangkabau lainnya, faktor yang melatarbelakangi pendapatnya dan metode istinbath yang digunakannya. Secara umum, dalam waris adat di Minangkabau terdapat perbedaan pendapat di antara para ulama Minangkabau antara yang menentang keras praktek kewarisan tersebut dan yang memperbolehkannya. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif analisis yaitu dengan menulusuri dan menelaah sumber-sumber data yang berhubungan dengan pemikiran Syekh Ahmad Khatȋb tentang waris adat, kemudian mendeskripsikan atau memberi gambaran atas objek yang diteliti melalui data atau sampel yang telah terkumpul dengan melakukan analisis yang kemudian membuat sebuah kesimpulan. Jenis penelitian yang digunakan dalam tesis ini adalah penelitian kepustakaan (Library Reseach) dengan menganalisa dari beberapa sumber data yang ada. Adapun Sumber primer yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah dua karya Syekh Ahmad Khatȋb yaitu kitâb al-Dâ`i al-Masmȗ` dan kitâb al-Manhaj al- Masyrȗ`, sedangkan sumber sekunder menggunakan data-data berupa kitab-kitab fikih, usûl fikih, kaidah fiqhiyyah, artikel, jurnal dan buku-buku yang berhubungan dengan pembahasan ini. -

Modernization is a process to construct soul to be independent. Modernization from feudalism to democracy. Modernization from the traditional agrarian to advance state and industrialized. Modernization from ignorance to scientific discoveries. Scientific modernization to challenge the advanced countries, and so on. Based on this fact, Hamka has a view that modernization of education is definitely needed. That is because of serious problem in the world of education in Indonesia. Furthermore, the Western education results a sense of antipathy toward Islam and at the same time, Islamic boarding school education mostly against the western world. According to Hamka modernization of education can be actualized through the role of mosque. Mosque has effective educational role and enlightenment, but at some mosques rise educational institutions, for the level of schools as well as university. Penghargaan itu begitu tinggi sehingga seorang tidak dibebani Iuntuk menjalankan ajaran-ajaran agama ketika akal itu rusak, dan tidak lagi berfungsi, gila umpamanya. Sebagaimana seorang mendapatkan dosa yang sangat berat ketika berusaha merusak fungsi akal atau bahkan meniadakannya, seperti bermabuk-mabukan. Islam memberikan penghargaan yang setinggi-tingginya bagi siapa saja yang menumbuhkembangkan fungsi akal dengan melalui Vol. 5, No. 1, Jumadal Ula 1430 80 Shobahussurur berbagai proses belajar mengajar, mendidik dan mencerahkan.1 Dari generasi ke generasi semangat mengembangkan ilmu pengetahuan itu terjadi. Penelitian, eksperimentasi, penemuan, dan metodologi keilmuan terus menerus dilakukan dan diperbarui oleh kaum intelektual muslim.
