Capital: Tassos. Population: 15,000 euros. Area: 147 sq m (380 sq km). Tasos, sometimes spelled Tasos, is a tourist destination of a Greek island in the northern Aegean island of the group, near Kavala. Thasos has about 13,500 inhabitants. Photo: Karaj, public domain. Geographically part of the North Aegean Sea, but the administrative part of the regional division of Kavala. It is the northernmost major Greek island, and the 12th largest in terms of area. Tasos is the northernmost of the Greek islands in the Aegean group island, and it lies just off the Macedonian coast in northeastern mainland Greece. Fabulously rich in ancient times, thanks to the large deposits of gold and marble, Tasos is now outside the top league of the Greek holiday islands, but he still has so much to offer the visitor. The beaches and villages of Tasos Excellent coastline almost rings the entire island, providing easy access to many of the sandy beaches that pepper the attractive coastline. Strangely, Tasos is unable to show up in many holiday brochures so it is something of a hidden treasure and is spared by the holiday crowds that mar some Greek islands. Where is the island of Tossos When a tourist is going to visit Tasos in the first place, he naturally wants to know where this island really is. Since Tasos is not as famous as Crete, Corfu or Rhodes (an existence we can learn from school times), some travelers do not even know which part of Greece on the map to look for it. Where is Tasos in Greece And it should be searched in the northeast of Greece, closer to the border of this country with Bulgaria. On the south and south-west side of the island (for example, in Limenaria) in good weather you can see one of the fingers St. Athos. Our Russian tourist is most often acquainted with two Greek cities - Thessaloniki and Athens. Consider the location of Tasos on the in relation to them. Thessaloniki and Athens are about 150 km from Thesos. You will have to move on a comfortable, but in some places the toll road. You will have to go to the city of Kavala or Keramothi - they both have a ferry service with Tasos. If you look at the map, you will see that tossos-Limenas and Prionos have two ports, they are connected to the mainland at two points: Limenas with Keramothi and Prionos with the city of Kavala. From there, ferries go to the island all year round, but in summer it is the most frequent. If you plan to visit Tossos from Athens, then when you look at the map of Greece, you will become somewhat uncomfortable - Athens is located far from this part of the country. But even from Athens you can get there quickly if you fly by plane to Kavala (for 1 hour) and then for 1.5 hours by ferry to the island. The small northern island of Tasos is considered one of the northernmost islands and the temperature there is appropriate. That is, summer is one of the shortest, and winter is one of the coldest in Greece. But tourists should not be intimidated, unless, of course, they expect to get a constant sun in September. Read about the weather in our other articles. As for the sea, the map tells us that the island is washed by the Aegean Sea - the cleanest and one of the best in the world, according to many travelers. The nearest smaller island is Samothrace. Pretty uninhabited and not yet quite touristy, with its interesting ruins and good beaches. The map also tells us that the shape of the island is almost round, and the area ???is almost round.??? The island is only 380 square kilometres. However, this is enough for an unforgotten Greek holiday. Tags: Attractions, Thassos Tour and purchase of olive oil. How to take your beloved child to Tasos. European Planning Studies, Vol. 9 No. 2, 2001 From Mining Community to Seasonal Visitor Destination: The Transformation of Sotiras, Thasos, Greece MARY CARAVELIS and RUSSELL IVY [Paper rst received, February 1999; in nal form, December 1999] ABSTRACT The community of Sotiras on the Greek island of Thasos has experienced two distinctive periods of economic boom during the twentieth century separated by a long period of decline and abandonment. Early in this century, a mining economy ourished, while today the community functions as a haven for seasonal visitors. This paper compares the socio-economic and spatial impacts of both periods via personal interviews and examination of letters of long-time inhabitants of the village. These sources seem to imply that the current growth period is less welcome by the native Sotirans. 1. Introduction The village of Sotiras is one of 31 communities which dot the Greek island of Thasos, the northernmost island in the Aegean Sea (Figure 1). The island has been famous for its mineral wealth since antiquity (Healy, 1978), and Sotiras, located on the north-west side of the island, functioned as the second most important mining town on Thasos during the early years of this century (Boreadis, 1954).
