“Screwball”: A Genre for the People Representing Social Classes in Depression Screwball Comedy (1934-1938) Virginie Pronovost Department of Media Studies Master Thesis 15 ECTS credits Cinema Studies Master's Programme in Cinema Studies (60 ECTS credits) Spring term 2020 Supervisor: Bo Florin “Screwball”: A Genre for the People Representing Social Classes in Depression Screwball Comedy (1934- 1938) Virginie Pronovost Abstract History welcomed the screwball comedy genre in 1934, a time where cinema was in urgent need of providing escapism to audiences victim of the Great Depression. Screwball films, therefore, chose to underline the distinction between social classes and to emphasise on the imperfections of the upper class. The following thesis aims to determine how Depression screwballs (screwball comedies released from 1934 to 1938) used their narrative power to establish this distinction between opposed social classes and how this reflects the undeniable importance of an overlooked genre. It is with a socio-historical approach, personal analyses and observations, that the following research has been conducted. In conclusion, it has been recognised that the genre drew its importance, not only in the way it represents social classes but also how it depicts their mutual interactions, therefore forming a significant whole. No. 15 ^ |The Museum of Modern Art FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 11 West'53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019 Tel. 956-6100 Cable: Modernart A QUARTER OF A CENTURY OF FILM ACCOMPLISHMENT: HAL ROACH HONORED BY MUSEUM Hal Roach, the producer who discovered and developed stars and directors such as Harold Lloyd, Charley Chase, Laurel and Hardy, Will Rogers, Our Gang, Leo McCarey, and George Stevens, will be honored by the presentation of nearly 100 of his films to be shown from February 12 through March 24 at The Museum of Modern Art. He will attend a private reception in the Museum Penthouse the evening preceding the tribute, which covers the period from 1915 to 1940, Mr. Roach's most productive years in film, though he continues to be active in television production to this day. Roach, also known for the Topper series, was a rival of the early comedy pio neer Mack Sennett, according to William K. Everson, who has assembled this retrospec tive. Mr. Everson, an authority on American film who teaches at the New School for Social Research and New York University, has just completed a book on Hal Roach, which the Museum is publishing concurrently with the Roach program. What sustained Roach's productions when the popularity of other comedies, such as Mack Sennett's, began to wane, was the reliance on construction, Everson points out, "Roach's world was serious and orderly...concerning i^tself far more with every day nightmares of frustration and embarrassment" than with the "time honored chase" or other standard sight gags. -

October 1, 1979, La Quinta, CA) is notable for being the Manhattan Cocktail (1928) and The Wild Party (1929). In the only woman to direct films during the Golden Age of the 1930s, she directed such films as: Behind the Make-Up Hollywood studio system. She amassed 20 directing credits in a (uncredited), Sarah and Son, Paramount on Parade (sequence career that spanned the 1920s to the 1940s. She came into her director), and Anybody's Woman in 1930; Honor Among Lovers own as a filmmaker working at Paramount, editing the Rudolph and Working Girls in 1931; Merrily We Go to Hell (1932), Valentino headliner Blood and Sand (1922). -
