Mabel's Blunder
Mabel’s Blunder By Brent E. Walker Mabel Normand was the first major female comedy star in American motion pictures. She was also one of the first female directors in Hollywood, and one of the original principals in Mack Sennett’s pioneering Keystone Comedies. “Mabel’s Blunder” (1914), made two years after the formation of the Keystone Film Company, captures Normand’s talents both in front of and behind the camera. Born in Staten Island, New York in 1892, a teenage Normand modeled for “Gibson Girl” creator Charles Dana Gibson before entering motion pictures with Vitagraph in 1910. In the summer of 1911, she moved over to the Biograph company, where D.W. Griffith was making his mark as a pioneering film director. Griffith had already turned actresses such as Florence Lawrence and Mary Pickford into major dramatic stars. Normand, however, was not as- signed to the dramas made by Griffith. Instead, she went to work in Biograph’s comedy unit, directed by an actor-turned-director named Mack Sennett. Normand’s first major film “The Diving Girl” (1911) brought her notice with nickelodeon audiences. With us this time are Babe London in a com- plete Christie-Educational two-reeler, Charley Chase in two shorts, Ed Kennedy in two shorts, another Billy West title with Babe Hardy in support and a handful of less familiar faces like Jess De Vorska and Billy Bletcher filling out the various casts. We’ve also included a spe- cial audio section featuring Music Hall performers Gracie Fields and Kirby and Hudson. Just in case that isn’t enough, our opening montage features a clip of Stan Laurel and Babe London “watching” the L&H short Our Wife in Stan’s apartment at the Oceana! As always, we have labored over the presenta- tion of these films. To that end, correct titles and inter- titles have been recreated whenever necessary, proper projection speeds (24 fps) have been observed and period (dance music) scores have been created from restored acoustic and electric 78 rpm records. The source materials for the visual elements on this dvd are all 16mm prints, except The Other Fellow which came originally from 35mm. -

COLIN LIVINGSTONE TAPLEY 1909 to 1995 Colin Livingstone Tapley Was the Third Son of Harold Livingstone Tapley (1875-1932) and Jean Brodie Tapley Nee Burt
COLIN LIVINGSTONE TAPLEY 1909 to 1995 Colin Livingstone Tapley was the third son of Harold Livingstone Tapley (1875-1932) and Jean Brodie Tapley nee Burt. He was born 7-5-1909 in Dunedin, one of 6 children, 5 sons followed by a daughter. Colin was educated in NZ and in the 1930s won a contest of which the prize was a Hollywood audition. He went on to be a supporting actor in several Metro Goldwyn Mayer and Paramount films during the 1930s but joined the air force in Canada when WW2 broke out, later moving to Britain where he was in a non fighting role. He had taken up flying before the war. He returned to NZ to Wanaka for a short time but then resumed his acting career, appearing in “the Dam Busters,” 1954. In England he married socialite Patsie Lyon nee Hambro. He retired from Acting in 1983 and they lived in the village of Coates in Gloucestershire. Not to mislead you, I will not be proposing an elaborate thesis or developing a complex argument: it is very much a snapshot from work in progress, a summary of selected findings, for whatever interest it might contain – and I would appreciate constructive feedback on the extent to which it is interesting! I will not be attempting even a full account of the ten-year period in my title but will try to give a general survey of the field in the 1970s while focusing on 1975 for most of my examples. The choice of year is not arbitrary: aside from coming at the exact midpoint of the decade and being reasonably representative, it also allows me to focus on a number of key controversies, events and developments affecting the presentation of films on television in subsequent years. -

The Museum of Modern Art For Immediate Release May 1994 MGM 70 YEARS: REDISCOVERIES AND CLASSICS June 24 - September 30, 1994 A retrospective celebrating the seventieth anniversary of Metro-Goldwyn- Mayer, the legendary Hollywood studio that defined screen glamour and elegance for the world, opens at The Museum of Modern Art on June 24, 1994. MGM 70 YEARS: REDISCOVERIES AND CLASSICS comprises 112 feature films produced by MGM from the 1920s to the present, including musicals, thrillers, comedies, and melodramas. On view through September 30, the exhibition highlights a number of classics, as well as lesser-known films by directors who deserve wider recognition. MGM's films are distinguished by a high artistic level, with a consistent polish and technical virtuosity unseen anywhere, and by a roster of the most famous stars in the world -- Joan Crawford, Clark Gable, Judy Garland, Greta Garbo, and Spencer Tracy. MGM also had under contract some of Hollywood's most talented directors, including Clarence Brown, George Cukor, Vincente Minnelli, and King Vidor, as well as outstanding cinematographers, production designers, costume designers, and editors. Exhibition highlights include Erich von Stroheim's Greed (1925), Victor Fleming's Gone Hith the Hind and The Wizard of Oz (both 1939), Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), and Ridley Scott's Thelma & Louise (1991). STANLIO & OLLIO Volerelaluna.it 08/04/2019 di: Edoardo Peretti Stanlio & Ollio sono due icone, due figure che giocano nel campo della mitologia collettiva. Sono conosciuti da chiunque e amati da molti, a livelli che nella storia del cinema comico, non solo muto, sono stati raggiunti forse solamente dal vagabondo Charlot. Questa fama diffusa ha spesso però portato a una rilettura del loro cinema parziale, elegiaca e dolce tanto quanto imprecisa e imperfetta, come tipico della memoria scolpita dai ricordi delle visioni dell’infanzia. La memoria dei due è stata in qualche modo confinata ai vari «Brutto Stiupìdo», ai piagnucolii di Stanlio, ai camera look e alle urla di dolore, rabbia e rassegnazione di Ollio e agli altri tormentoni visivi e lessicali. Il loro destino postumo è stato differente da quello, mettiamo, di Buster Keaton, la cui conoscenza è più limitata, ma anche più precisa e consapevole. La loro memoria più diffusa è, inoltre, una memoria perlopiù sonora, con i cortometraggi muti realizzati nel biennio 1927/1929 rimasti parzialmente nel dimenticatoio, ma in realtà importanti per come i due hanno affinato l’intesa e le caratteristiche della loro poetica; a partire dalla “slow burn“, passando per le deformazioni fisiche di oggetti e corpi, fino ad arrivare al modo particolare, all’insegna della stasi, con cui il loro cinema raccontava la guerra tra individuo e contesto tipica della comicità muta. Tre sono i filoni principali della loro filmografia; le “work situation comedy” – dove improvvisavano un lavoro con effetti devastanti (Finishing touch [1927], Big Business [1929], Wrong again [1929]), The music box (1932) e Busy bodies (1933) –, i film in cui convivevano in maniera goffamente cameratesca (Leave ‘em laughing [1928], They go boom [1929] e Laughing gravy [1930]) e le cosiddette “commedie matrimoniali”, dove erano vittime di consorti arpie e dove il caos era creato dai loro tentativi di svicolare dal loro controllo o nascondere magheggi (The purple moment [1928], Should married man go home? [1928], Chickens come home [1931]).
