TRANSLATION (The Translation of the Readers follows immediately upon the conclusion of the Analysis and is provided with a separate table of contents). ii SUMMARY This study is a translation and analysis of a set of grammar readers used in the first five grades of elementary school in Communist China from about 1958 through June 1966. The object of the study was to determine the significance of the Readers as means a socialization. Each selection was analyzed in terms of itstopicand of its manifest themes, which were class- ified in three categories: informational, political, and behavioral. Each selection was then assigned a central theme from one of these categories and a subtheme or subthemes from as many of these categor- ies as were applicable. The dominant emphases of the Readers were ascertained from the total scores for the topical and thematic categories. The report is in two parts, the first of which consists of a general survey of moral and patriotic education in Communist China since 1949 and of the actual analysis of the Readers.The second part is the translation. It was found that the major topic in the Readers is "approved behavior," that is, the presentation of standards of approved con- duct. Next to this in importance are aspects of China, rural life, war, and Mo. In general, the topics deal with events in or about China with little concern shown for the outside world. Dominant informational themes are those concerned with agricul- ture, Chinese Communist institutions or personalities, traditional- China, and basic scientific knowledge. Dominant political themes are allegiance to the "new" society, the "benevolence" of the "new" society, the glorification of Mao, the "evils" of Republican China, and military conflict. Dominant behavioral themes are those of social and personal responsibility, achievement, altruistic behavior, collective behav- ior, and, as a subtheme, prosocial aggression. From this, it was concluded that the "ideal" dhild as projected by the Readers would be a person totally dedicated to and willing to sacrifice himself entirely in the service of the Communist regime.He would also be a person havini a strong sense of social responsibility and desire for achievement for the benefit of the collective. It was further concluded that the ultimate effectiveness of the Readers would depend on a variety of factors including the intelligence and experience of the child, his awareness of contradictions between the values enunciated in the Readers and actual practice within the society, and the coutse of political events within China. CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION In Orwell's 1984, Winston Smith inevitably succumbs to the distortions of reality with which the totalitarian regime of Oceania floods his consciousness. Although conditions in present- day mainland China are far removed from those in Orwell's Oceania, the two states bear a resemblence in that as totalitarian regimes they attempt to control and manipulate not only the overt behavior of the individual but his'inner life as well. In China, all media of communication should play the role of guardians of ultimate truth, presenting to the people what the authorities wish them to know and excluding from them information felt to be in some way unsafe for them to know,. Education is one of the most important of the nedia in this respect. Indeed, it is no exaggeration to state that the Communist Chinese summum bonum is the creation, through education, of a society populated solely by 1Maoist Man"-- a militant, technically creative, political automaton, conditioned to act as Mao Tse-tung would act if he could be everywhere at the same time. To the leaders of China, the current younger generation repre- sents perhaps their last hope of preserving the spirit of the Revo- lution. It is small wonder, then, that so much attention is lavished on the young in the attempt to instill in them an awareness of their importance as "successors to the revolution."Although it is doubt- ful that the regime can in the long run succeed in stemming the tendencies away from the original revolutionary spirit that motivated it in its achieving of power, the effort is nevertheless being made to kindle a revolutionary spirit in the young, as this collection of elementary school readers clearly indicates. As other investigators have indicated, the content of children's readers and textbooks often bears a close relationship to the needs of a society under given conditions of development. It is obvious that the hmagery and themes of children's readers, which are written by adults, are concerned eitherconsciously or uncon- sciously with molding patterns of behavior and thought that the writers feel are desirable within the context of their society.

    Performing Shakespeare in Contemporary Taiwan by Ya-hui Huang A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment for the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Central Lancashire Jan 2012 Abstract Since the 1980s, Taiwan has been subjected to heavy foreign and global influences, leading to a marked erosion of its traditional cultural forms. Indigenous traditions have had to struggle to hold their own and to strike out into new territory, adopt or adapt to Western models. For most theatres in Taiwan, Shakespeare has inevitably served as a model to be imitated and a touchstone of quality. Such Taiwanese Shakespeare performances prove to be much more than merely a combination of Shakespeare and Taiwan, constituting a new fusion which shows Taiwan as hospitable to foreign influences and unafraid to modify them for its own purposes. Nonetheless, Shakespeare performances in contemporary Taiwan are not only a demonstration of hybridity of Westernisation but also Sinification influences. Since the 1945 Kuomintang (Chinese Nationalist Party, or KMT) takeover of Taiwan, the KMT’s one-party state has established Chinese identity over a Taiwan identity by imposing cultural assimilation through such practices as the Mandarin-only policy during the Chinese Cultural Renaissance in Taiwan. Both Taiwan and Mainland China are on the margin of a “metropolitan bank of Shakespeare knowledge” (Orkin, 2005, p. 1), but it is this negotiation of identity that makes the Taiwanese interpretation of Shakespeare much different from that of a Mainlanders’ approach, while they share certain commonalities that inextricably link them. This study thus examines the interrelation between Taiwan and Mainland China operatic cultural forms and how negotiation of their different identities constitutes a singular different Taiwanese Shakespeare from Chinese Shakespeare.

    Religions of foreign origin have shaped Chinese cultural history much stronger than generally assumed and continue to have impact on Chinese society in varying regional degrees. The essays collected in the present volume put a special emphasis on these “foreign” and less familiar aspects of Chinese religion. Apart from an introductory article on Daoism (the BKGA 85 BKGA Religion in China proto­typical autochthonous religion of China), the volume reflects China’s encounter with religions of the so-called Western Regions, starting from the adoption of Indian Buddhism to early settlements of religious minorities from the Near East (Islam, Christianity, and Judaism) and the early modern debates between Confucians and Christian missionaries.     TRAMES, 2012, 16(66/61), 3, 237–285 OFFICIAL COLOURS OF CHINESE REGIMES: A PANCHRONIC PHILOLOGICAL STUDY WITH HISTORICAL ACCOUNTS OF CHINA Jingyi Gao Institute of the Estonian Language, University of Tartu, and Tallinn University Abstract. The paper reports a panchronic philological study on the official colours of Chinese regimes. The historical accounts of the Chinese regimes are introduced. The official colours are summarised with philological references of archaic texts. Remarkably, it has been suggested that the official colours of the most ancient regimes should be the three primitive colours: (1) white-yellow, (2) black-grue yellow, and (3) red-yellow, instead of the simple colours. There were inconsistent historical records on the official colours of the most ancient regimes because the composite colour categories had been split. It has solved the historical problem with the linguistic theory of composite colour categories. Besides, it is concluded how the official colours were determined: At first, the official colour might be naturally determined according to the substance of the ruling population. There might be three groups of people in the Far East. (1) The developed hunter gatherers with livestock preferred the white-yellow colour of milk. (2) The farmers preferred the red-yellow colour of sun and fire. (3) The herders preferred the black-grue-yellow colour of water bodies. Later, after the Han-Chinese consolidation, the official colour could be politically determined according to the main property of the five elements in Sino-metaphysics. The red colour has been predominate in China for many reasons. Signed: Date: 19 May 2012 I To my newly born baby II ABSTRACT The twentieth century saw the spread of Western art music across the world as Western ideology and values acquired increasing dominance in the global order. How did this process occur in China, what complexities does it display and what are its distinctive features? This thesis aims to provide a detailed and coherent understanding of the Westernisation of Chinese music in the 20th century, focusing on the ever-changing relationship between music and social ideology and the rise and evolution of national identity as expressed in music. This thesis views these issues through three crucial stages: the early period of the 20th century which witnessed the transition of Chinese society from an empire to a republic and included China’s early modernisation; the era from the 1930s to 1940s comprising the Japanese intrusion and the rising of the Communist power; and the decades of economic and social reform from 1978 onwards. The thesis intertwines the concrete analysis of particular pieces of music with social context and demonstrates previously overlooked relationships between these stages. Lin Biao, foreword to the second edition This introduction is not so much about Mao’s quotations themselves, but rather the effusive foreword that introduced Chinese and foreign readers to Quotations from Chairman Mao at the height of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Credited to Lin Biao, Mao’s top military man and tireless promoter of the Little Red Book, it described how the written word could transform ideas into a material force for revolution. According to the foreword, the Little Red Book was a weapon of mass instruction – the intercontinental delivery system for a potentially world-shattering ideological payload: “Once Mao Tse-tung’s thought is grasped by the broad masses, it becomes a source of strength and a spiritual atom bomb of infinite power.”1 Lin Biao’s metaphor was an adulatory exaggeration, of course, but it should not be dismissed as only that. I will show, through an extended exegesis, that the spiritual atom bomb was in fact a coherent concept within its own Maoist intellectual context. More broadly, I will argue that the spiritual atom bomb was also a telling symptom of anxieties about the Cultural Revolution in China, about the Sino-Soviet split within the socialist world, about the larger Cold War between capitalism and socialism, and about the global confrontation with the real prospect of nuclear Armageddon.

A beautifully printed book with numerous photographs and a detailed English-Chinese glossary, Kirk A. Denton’s Exhibiting the Past analyzes contemporary China’s museums in a largely chronological manner based on the themes of these museums. In eleven chapters, the book moves through museums of premodern history, of the Chinese Revolution, of market economy reforms, of revolutionary martyrs, of military glories, of the Sino-Japanese War, of communist leaders, of literary figures, of ethnographic minorities, of Red Tourism, and of the future. The bulk of this far-ranging book, thus, is devoted to the communist state apparatus of ideological interpellation. Taking readers through multiple sites, Denton reiterates how the stories of great men and earth-shaking events have come to mold modern China. This brief description already highlights the ambiguity of the keyword “postsocialist” in the book title: there is nothing “post” ideologically about today’s China, which continues and embellishes the communist mythology from its earliest days, precisely because it has gone capitalist. Denton draws from “postsocialist” and, what is taken to be its next of kin, “neoliberal” in terms of theoretical underpinnings. These conceptual parameters lead Denton to repeatedly claim that his “focus in this book is politics” (3), or the State, to the extent that Denton justifies not analyzing cultural texts beyond the eleven types of museums. Examples abound: On the self- sacrificing revolutionary model Lei Feng, Denton gestures toward some online black humor and Stephen Chow-style parody of the hero, only to immediately withdraw: “My principal concern is the official state discourse on Lei Feng, not revisionist historiography or deconstructive spoofs” (161).
