It is generally found below 300 metres in altitude, on nutrient-poor mineral soils. Areas of high quality lowland heathland are not solely composed of vast tracts of heather. They have an ericaceous layer of varied height and structure, with areas of scattered trees and scrub, bare ground, gorse, wet heath, bogs and open water. The oceanic climate, characterised by mild winters and relatively high rainfall throughout the year, favours the formation of heathland habitats if the required acidic and nutrient-poor substrates are present. The range of species found on these western European oceanic heathlands are unique and can often be very diverse.

Beckett 1 Chapter One: Origins to 1603 Although it is generally accepted that a truly national system of defence originated in England with the first militia statutes of 1558, there are continuities with earlier defence arrangements. One Edwardian historian claimed that the origins of the militia lay in the forces gathered by Cassivelaunus to oppose Caesar’s second landing in Britain in 54 BC. 1 This stretches credulity but military obligations or, more correctly, common burdens imposed on able bodied freemen do date from the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of the seventh and eight centuries. The supposedly resulting fyrd - simply the old English word for army - was not a genuine ‘nation in arms’ in the way suggested by Victorian historians but much more of a selective force of nobles and followers serving on a rotating basis. 2 The celebrated Burghal Hidage dating from the reign of Edward the Elder sometime after 914 AD but generally believed to reflect arrangements put in place by Alfred the Great does suggest significant ability to raise manpower at least among the West Saxons for the garrisoning of 30 fortified burghs on the basis of men levied from the acreage apportioned to each burgh. 3 In theory, it is possible that one in every four of all able-bodied men were liable for such garrison service. 4 Equally, while most surviving documentation dates only from 1 G. Sleepy Hollow Homeowners Association May 3, 2013 Board of Supervisors of Marin County 3501 Civil Center Drive San Rafael, CA 94903-4157 Re: Stream Conservation Area (SCA) Proposed Amendments to the Development Code Honorable Members of the Board of Supervisors: INTRODUCTION The Sleepy Hollow Homes Association (SHHA) objects to the proposed changes to Chapters 22.33 (Stream Protection) and 22.63 (Stream Conservation Area Permit) as they would apply to the residents of the unincorporated portion of San Anselmo known as Sleepy Hollow. We ask that the County exempt and/or delay implementation of any changes to Chapters 22.33 and 22.63 as to the city-centered corridor streams, including Sleepy Hollow. The SHHA supports implementation of the proposed amendments to the San Geronimo Valley, to protect wildlife habitat in streams where Coho Salmon currently exist. The SHHA supports regulations to ensure the health and survival of the species in these areas. The SHHA recognizes the urgency of this matter to the San Geronimo Valley, both for the survival of the endangered and declining Coho population and for the property rights of the affected residents who are currently subject to a building moratorium.
