Reincarnation, Rebirth, Transmigration Reincarnation, Rebirth, Transmigration Sumitra Phoenix Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (by creative work and dissertation) December 2016 Victorian College of the Arts University of Melbourne 1 Thesis Reincarnation, rebirth, transmigration This thesis sought to examine the common elements in reincarnation beliefs, as encountered in stories from world religions and cultures, in scholarly literature and studies, in films made from 1990 to 2010, and in the lived experiences of thirty yoga practitioners over the past fifty years. It then sought to incorporate these recurring themes into the screenplay and the final production of an engaging, hand drawn, narrative, animated film. Abstract To achieve the aims of the thesis, interviews were conducted with 33 participants, all of whom had practised yoga or meditation. After analysing these interviews, six main themes were identified. Participants talked of how they remembered past lives in meditation, dreams, and visions. They mentioned that visiting a particular place sparked memories of having been there in another era. They revealed relationships with friends and family that continued through different lifetimes. Many of them remembered a moment of death, particularly if the death was violent. Most of them had these experiences within a year of beginning an intense practice of yoga or meditation. Finally, participants were asked about authenticity, and whether these stories could be verified. From the themes identified in the interviews, a narrative screenplay was written. From this screenplay, a 14 minute animation was developed with added music which was specially composed for this film. The animation is entitled ‘The Reincarnation of Pearl and Carly.’ In addition, a representative sample of international films completed since 1990 were analysed by applying the six themes arising from the interviews to explore the universality of the themes as expressed in this medium . 2 Declaration This is to certify that (i) the thesis comprises only my original work towards the PhD except where indicated in the Preface, (ii) due acknowledgement has been made in the text to all other material used, (iii) the thesis is 70,275 words in length, exclusive of tables, maps, bibliographies and appendices, as approved by the Research Higher Degrees Committee. Feminist student activists often put their own female bodies on display to disrupt the disembodied “objective” thinking that still seemed to dominate the academy. The philosopher Theodor Adorno responded to one such action, the “bared breasts incident,” carried out by his radical students in Germany in 1969, in an essay, “Marginalia to Theory and Praxis.” In that essay, he defends himself against the students’ claim that he proved his lack of relevance to contemporary students when he failed to respond to the spectacle of their liberated bodies. He acknowledged that the protest movements seemed to offer thoughtful people a way “out of their self-isolation,” but ultimately, to replace philosophy with bodily spectacle would mean to miss the “infinitely progressive aspect of the separation of theory and praxis” (259, 266). Lisa Yun Lee argues that this separation continues to animate contemporary feminist debates, and that it is worth returning to Adorno’s reasoning, if we wish to understand women’s particular modes of theoretical ii insight in conversation with “grand perspectives” on cultural theory in the twenty-first century.

Defended Keith Augustine, M.A. Internet Infidels, Colorado Springs, CO ABSTRACT: Four preceding commentaries present a variety of criticisms of "Does Paranormal Perception Occur in Near-Death Experiences?": that most near-death researchers do not interpret near-death experiences (NDEs) as evidence for life after death; that near-death researchers never appeal to NDE accounts incorporating predictable or uncorroborated details as evidence for veridical paranormal perception during NDEs; that reliable data contradict my critique of near-death veridicality studies; that it is unscientific to suggest a role for embellishment in NDE reports; that the patient in the Maria's shoe case reported veridical details that she could not have learned about through conventional means; and that my critique of the Pam Reynolds case amounts to an "a priori dismissal" of features suggesting veridical paranormal perception or consciousness in the absence of brain activity. I respond to each of these and other criticisms in kind. KEY WORDS: out-of-body experiences; survival hypothesis; veridical para normal perception; embellishment; anesthesia awareness. According to Bruce Greyson, my critique of near-death veridicality research - particularly my claim that the majority of near-death researchers interpret NDEs as evidence for survival after death - is founded on "unsubstantiated speculation from the popular media" rather than any scientific data or scholarly literature. In fact, the claim is an inference based on the explicit comments of prominent near-death researchers themselves, including the very researchers Keith Augustine, M.A., is Executive Director and Scholarly Paper Editor of Internet Infidels, a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to defending and promoting metaphysical naturalism on the Internet.

The basic Gnostic story, which varied in details from teacher to teacher, was this: In the beginning there was an unknowable, immaterial, and invisible God, sometimes called the Father of All and sometimes by other names. “He” was neither male nor female, and was composed of an implicitly finite amount of a living nonphysical substance. Surrounding this God was a great empty region called the Pleroma (the fullness). Beyond the Pleroma lay empty space. The God acted to fill the Pleroma through a series of emanations, a squeezing off of small portions of his/its nonphysical energetic divine material. In most accounts there are thirty emanations in fifteen complementary pairs, each getting slightly less of the divine material and therefore being slightly weaker. The emanations are called Aeons (eternities) and are mostly named personifications in Greek of abstract ideas.

Anton Karl Kozlovic Murray Leeder’s exciting new book sits comfortably alongside The Haunted Screen: Ghosts in Literature & Film (Kovacs), Ghost Images: Cinema of the Afterlife (Ruffles), Dark Places: The Haunted House in Film (Curtis), Popular Ghosts: The Haunted Spaces of Everyday Culture (Blanco and Peeren), The Spectralities Reader: Ghost and Haunting in Contemporary Cultural Theory (Blanco and Peeren), The Ghostly and the Ghosted in Literature and Film: Spectral Identities (Kröger and Anderson), and The Spectral Metaphor: Living Ghosts and the Agency of Invisibility (Peeren) amongst others. Within his Introduction Leeder claims that “[g]hosts have been with cinema since its first days” (4), that “cinematic double exposures, [were] the first conventional strategy for displaying ghosts on screen” (5), and that “[c]inema does not need to depict ghosts to be ghostly and haunted” (3). However, despite the above-listed texts and his own reference list (9–10), Leeder somewhat surprisingly goes on to claim that “this volume marks the first collection of essays specifically about cinematic ghosts” (9), and that the “principal focus here is on films featuring ‘non-figurative ghosts’—that is, ghosts supposed, at least diegetically, to be ‘real’— in contrast to ‘figurative ghosts’” (10). In what follows, his collection of fifteen essays is divided across three main parts chronologically examining the phenomenon. Part One of the book is devoted to the ghosts of precinema and silent cinema. In Chapter One, “Phantom Images and Modern Manifestations: Spirit Photography, Magic Theater, Trick Films, and Photography’s Uncanny”, Tom Gunning links “Freud’s uncanny, the hope to use modern technology to overcoming [sic] death or contact the afterlife, and the technologies and practices that led to cinema” (10).
