We live in exciting times, in which technological acceleration drive profound changes in all walks of life. Health and Healthcare have not been seriously disrupted by these changes to date, but it is suggested that this steady state is very likely to change, soon. This promise, or threat, depends on one’s point of view, is most relevant to discuss in Israel in light of its designation as one of the world’s health-tech key innovation hubs. Our theme for this year’s conference is “Health and Healthcare in the Age of Innovation”, as we aim to provide a platform for exchanging ideas and innovative approaches, and for exploring the dynamic evolution of health policy and healthcare practices worldwide, acknowledging the complexities and uncertainties in this field in this exciting era. We have structured the conference into four broad sub-themes, each led by a pair of Israeli and global scholars, that will help us on the journey to realize the potential of this age of innovation. Christian Lovis and Kira Radinsky lead our Data-Driven Care track, and will discuss how shall we harness the potential of advanced analytics and healthcare big data. Daniel Kraft and Rafael Beyar will discuss the Uber’ization of Healthcare, and whether the new models of care provision provide inferior care to the masses. Peter Neumann and Dan Greenberg will look into Innovation in Health Economics, and the Economics of Healthcare Innovation, And Hal Wolf and Avi Israeli will elucidate New Challenges and Threats in the Age of Innovation - in Ethics, Equity and Privacy Risks. Global leaders will be addressing the conference in plenary and parallel sessions. For the first time, we will include special ‘Meet the Expert’ sessions and rapid innovation talks throughout the conference. Wishing us all a successful and inspiring conference, and a lovely time in Jerusalem. Copyright C Cambridge University Press doi:10.1017/S0269889710000153 Introduction Leo Corry and Tal Golan Tel Aviv University and University of California, San Diego The history of Israeli science and technology offers a unique case study of a young and small nation that has developed an unprecedented love affair with science and technology.Unlike other nineteenth-century ideologies, Zionism was never considered to be founded on science. Nevertheless, from the very start, the Zionist movement perceived the sciences, pure and applied, as central to its program of creating a new Jewish society in the Land of Israel (Funkenstein [1985] 2003). Modern science was to provide twice for the Jews: a relief from their suffocating religion and the tools needed to recover their ancient land from its ruins. Israel would remain the people of the book, but it would be the Book of Nature, not of God, that would set it free. Sharing the universal knowledge and values of science with mankind, the Jews would finally become both normal and self-determined. Thus, already in the nineteenth century, long before the State of Israel was founded, Zionist visionaries had dreamt of it as a modern version of Francis Bacon’s utopian Kingdom of Bensalem, where science and technology would provide health, wealth, and power (Elboim-Dror 1993; Herzl 1902). This did not remain a mere dream for long. By the 1920s, the Jewish population in Palestine, which sported by most generous estimates no more than 50,000 souls, had already boasted a high-minded research university in Jerusalem; an equally ambitious technical university in the northern city of Haifa; and a number of agricultural and medical stations throughout the land.

However, no study to date has examined gender differences in the outcomes of this type of hair loss. The current study aimed to investigate gender differences in health and psychosocial outcomes of hair loss resulting from childhood irradiation for tinea capitis, and to identify the risk factors associated with depression in both men and women. Medical records held at the archives of the Israel National Center for Compensation of Scalp Ringworm Victims were retrospectively reviewed for 217 women and 105 men who received maximum disability compensation due to severe hair loss resulting from irradiation for tinea capitis. We found that women were at increased risk of developing psychosocial symptoms, including depression.
