  • Stop 5 on Lower Saxony Asparagus Route Braunschweig
Lower Saxony Asparagus Route Route 7 5 Stops Put down the pint, the pretzel, and the sausage. The real German love affair is with asparagus, or Spargel. From April to June, you’ll see it light up cozy food stalls and star on restaurant menus around the country—but particularly along the Lower Saxony Asparagus Route. This 466-mile loop in Germany’s northwest ventures from ancient cathedrals to dense forests to world-class museums and ornate palaces. The possible stops are nearly endless, but below you’ll find a few of the most memorable—and most buttery—highlights. MATADOR network in paid partnership paid in with Credit: Dominik Ketz / Lüneburger Heide GmbH Stop 1 on Lower Saxony Asparagus Route Nienburg Credit: Shutterstock/May_Lana Lying on the Weser River between Hanover and Bremen, Nienburg is a sizable town— population: 32,000—with a rich and turbulent history. It’s been occupied several times over the centuries, even briefly becoming part of the French Empire during the Napoleonic Wars. Perhaps the best remembered historical incident, though, was in 1625 during the Thirty Years War, when a group of daring locals snuck into the camp of occupying commander Graf von Tilly. They made off with a tent and a flag, an escapade you can still enjoy to this day—it’s reenacted annually here in town. Visitors will also want to explore the Fresenhof, the handsome two-story timbered building that hosts the Nienburg Museum. Afterward, be sure to stop by a local restaurant to sample regional dishes, like Nienburg asparagus with ham, kale with Braegenwurst, and sauerkraut with smoked pork.

  • Bavaria the Bavarians Emerged in a Region North of the Alps, Originally Inhabited by the Celts, Which Had Been Part of the Roman Provinces of Rhaetia and Noricum
Bavaria The Bavarians emerged in a region north of the Alps, originally inhabited by the Celts, which had been part of the Roman provinces of Rhaetia and Noricum. The Bavarians spoke Old High German but, unlike other Germanic groups, did not migrate from elsewhere. Rather, they seem to have coalesced out of other groups left behind by Roman withdrawal late in the 5th century AD. These peoples may have included Marcomanni, Thuringians, Goths, Rugians, Heruli, and some remaining Romans. The name "Bavarian" ("Baiuvari") means "Men of Baia" which may indicate Bohemia, the homeland of the Marcomanni. They first appear in written sources circa 520. Saint Boniface completed the people's conversion to Christianity in the early 8th century. Bavaria was, for the most part, unaffected by the Protestant Reformation, and even today, most of it is strongly Roman Catholic. From about 550 to 788, the house of Agilolfing ruled the duchy of Bavaria, ending with Tassilo III who was deposed by Charlemagne. Three early dukes are named in Frankish sources: Garibald I may have been appointed to the office by the Merovingian kings and married the Lombard princess Walderada when the church forbade her to King Chlothar I in 555. Their daughter, Theodelinde, became Queen of the Lombards in northern Italy and Garibald was forced to flee to her when he fell out with his Frankish over- lords. Garibald's successor, Tassilo I, tried unsuccessfully to hold the eastern frontier against the expansion of Slavs and Avars around 600. Tassilo's son Garibald II seems to have achieved a balance of power between 610 and 616.

THE INTERNATIONAL COMMISSION AND ASSOCIATION ON NOBILITY (TICAN) Memories of the House of Este in England The Royal House of Windsor, in their veins runs the blood of the oldest Italian Dynasty Carmelo Currò Troiano & Don Salvatore Ferdinando Antonio Caputo (George, by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, France and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, Prince-Elector of Hanover, Duke of Brunswick. ca. 1714, the year of his succession, by Sir Godfrey Kneller) Memories of the House of Este in England The Este Royal Family still reigns, and with the world's most famous monarchy. It reigns under another name, because now is called Windsor. In their veins, however, runs the blood of the oldest Italian Dynasty. Among the many states of late medieval Italy, one stands out for its unfamiliarity to an English audience and for its neglect in historical research: that of the Este family, lords (later Dukes) of the cities of Ferrara, Modena and Reggio in northern Italy. Welf IV d'Este, son of Alberto Azzo II, moved to Germany, first to Carinthia and then to Bavaria, giving rise to one of the most important families in European history, the Guelphs. This in turn ultimately led to the ascension to the English throne in 1714 with George I of England. The Este constituted, with the Savoy, the longest Italian family dynastic among the various lordships that from the Middle Ages to the Risorgimento (The Resurgence) dominated the small states that made up the boot of Italy controlled for long periods a portion that practically reached from the Adriatic Sea to the Tyrrhenian Sea until the Republic of Lucca, acting as cushion between the states of the Church and those in the north, Venice, Mantua and Milan.

Nazi Looted Art (?) The Guelph Treasure ALAN PHILIPP, GERALD G. STIEBEL, JED R. LEIBER v. FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY Irini Zourlantoni SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS, BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION & LEGAL STUDIES A thesis submitted for the degree of Master of Arts (MA) in Art, Law and Economy February 2018 Thessaloniki – Greece Student Name: Irini Zourlantoni SID: 2202160014 Supervisor: Dr. Marc Weber I hereby declare that the work submitted is mine and that where I have made use of another’s work, I have attributed the source(s) according to the Regulations set in the Student’s Handbook. February 2018 Thessaloniki - Greece Abstract This dissertation was written as part of the MA in Art, Law, and Economy at the International Hellenic University. There is a current case in the courts regarding the subject, and a state is being sued. This dissertation shows many aspects concerning the Guelph Treasure and its problems of restitution. The main topic is whether the Guelph treasure is, in fact, Nazi- looted art or if it was purchased under rightful conditions in 1935. The collection of information from this period gives a more unobstructed view of this current situation. Books, newspapers and published journals helped to collate and combine information. The period between 1933-1945 was challenging, and our generation certainly has to fix it. It would be an excellent start to compensate for any artifact looted during wartime. Research is focused on the restitution of the most valuable artifact Nazi Germany ever purchased. The first chapters distinguish and clarify the different definitions related to Nazi-looted art, the elucidation of what the Guelph treasure is and how it has been valuable over time.

Colette Marie Bowie M.A. (Hist), Mphil. (Hist) Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Glasgow School of History April 2011 i Abstract This thesis compares and contrasts the experiences of the three daughters of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine. Matilda, Leonor and Joanna all undertook exogamous marriages which cemented dynastic alliances and furthered the political and diplomatic ambitions of their parents. Their later choices with regards religious patronage, as well as the way they and their immediate families were buried, seem to have been influenced by their natal family, suggesting a coherent sense of family consciousness. To discern why this might be the case, an examination of the childhoods of these women has been undertaken, to establish what emotional ties to their natal family may have been formed at this time.
