6.2.1.2 List of Terrestrial Fauna The following tables present the lists of terrestrial flora identified in the study area. The legend is common to all tables. Legend

• Latin Name – Nomenclature from most up to date sources of data including IUCN (2011) as well as recent publications on species;

• (1) Presence

o Observed – Species directly seen or indirectly recorded from field signs (tracks, droppings, territory markings, skins, feeding remains or other);

o Potentially Present – Species not directly or indirectly identified but thought to be potentially present due to suitability of habitat recorded, current range of the species (from literature or records) or both range and habitat suitability together;

o (Unlikely – Habitat unsuitable for species and / or species thought to be extinct as no records (from literature) taken recently (within 10 years); • (2) Habitat Preference – Habitat likely to support species categorized into:

• (3) Conservation Status – Status of species listed based on level of conservation threat faced according to local Albanian and IUCN classification (both at Global and Mediterranean levels). The classification systems utilize the following categories: Critically Endangered (CR), Endangered (EN), Vulnerable (VU), Near Threatened (NT), Data Deficient (DD), and Not Evaluated (NE). For the IUCN Mediterranean listing, species are deemed Not Applicable (NA) for assessment if the species were introduced after 1500 A.D., Mediterranean population is less than 1% of their global population, and / or if less than 1% of their range lies within the region;

• (4) Study Area Abundance – Quantity of individuals in the species that can be found in the study area; and

• (5) Protection Status – Legal protection given to the species either through local legislative provisions or through multilateral agreements or international law. Under the Bern Convention of which Albanian is a signatory species are listed under Annex II (Species of fauna strictly protected) or Annex III (Protected fauna species which can be exploited if the population level permits).

The TAP Project passes through Albania as well as Greece and Italy (which are both within the EU), therefore species protection has also been listed under the Habitats Directive for Mammals, Reptiles and Amphibians and under the Birds Directive for Bird Species.

Protection under the Habitats Directive is as follows:

• Annex II: Species of community interest whose conservation requires the designation of Special Areas of Conservation;

• Annex IV: Species of community interest in need of strict protection; and

• Annex V: Species of interest whose taking in the wild and exploitation may be subject to management measures.

Protection under the Birds Directive is as follows:

• Annex I: Birds which are the subject of special conservation measures concerning their habitat in order to ensure their survival and reproduction in their area of distribution. As appropriate, Special Protection Areas to be established to assist conservation measures;

• Annex IIa: Birds which may potentially be hunted under national legislation within the geographical land and sea area to which the Directive applies;

• Annex IIb: Birds which may potentially be hunted under national legislation only within certain specified Member States;

(6) Section – The study area location where the species was observed or is potentially present according to East (E), Central East (C.E), Central West (C.W), West (W) and North (N) Sections; and

(7) Bird Behaviour – Observed bird species were categorized as Resident (R), Summer visitors and breeders (SV), Winter visitors (W), and Migratory (MP)
