COACHED BY CHAMPIONS: Denver’s head coaches, alpine coach Andy LeRoy and Nordic coach Dave Stewart, have their fair share of championship caliber racing. LeRoy won the slalom at the 2000 NCAA National Championships while at the University of Colorado, following a six-year stint on the U.S. Ski Team that included a trip to the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. Meanwhile, Stewart was a 2006 national champion in the sprint relay while racing professionally after graduating from Vermont. First-year Nordic assistant coach Håkon Johansen was the apart of the Pioneers NCAA Championship teams in 2001 and 2002. 2012 SEASON RECAP Colorado Invitational (Jan. 7, 11-14) Espen Lysdahl finished third overall in the men’s giant slalom, and Sterling Grant finished second in the women’s slalom, leading the Pioneers to a fourth-place finish in the standings with 732 points. Kate Dolan recorded a sixth-place finish in the classical race to close the meet. Denver Invitational (Jan. 14-15, 20-21) The Pioneers finished fourth at the Denver Invitational with 752 points, trailing Utah (902), Colorado (842) and Alaska Anchorage (770). Trevor Philp took second in the slalom, while Kate Dolan and Makayla Cappel finished second and third in the women’s 5K classical Nordic race. Alaska Anchorage Invitational (Feb. 4-8, 10) Denver took third place at the Alaska Anchorage Invitational, scoring 775 points behind Utah (898) and Colorado (831). Espen Lysdhal won the men’s slalom and turned in a third-place finish. Seawolf Invitational (Feb. 9-11) Sterling Grant and Trevor Philp finished on top of the slalom podium, leading the Pioneers to 806 points and a second- place finish, trailing Utah (858). Andrew Dougherty took fourth in the men’s 10K Nordic freestyle. RMISA Qualifiers (Jan. 6, Feb. 22-23) Sterling Grant placed first in the women’s slalom and Devin Delaney came in 10th in the giant slalom. In the men’s GS, Luke Laidlaw placed 10th in the opening qualifier, while scoring a second-place finish in the second GS qualifier. RMISA Championships/NCAA Western Regional (Feb. 24-25) Charlie Reynolds recorded his top finish of the season, placing second in the men’s slalom. Denver finished fifth in the team standings with 716 points. Kate Dolan recorded third and fourth-place finishes in the classical and freestyle races, respectively.
