    EAST ASIAN MISSION EAMV NEWSLETTERS VICARIATE Vicariate Newsletter #9, February 2016 The period before and after Christmas found the members of the East Asian Vicariate very busy with projects, ministries, and holiday celebrations. As soon as Advent began, we sponsored the 8th annual Puso sa Puso Christmas party for nearly one thousand needy children in Manila. The next week we welcomed two members of the Generalate, Fr. Milton and Fr. Augustin who were joining us for our Vicariate Chapter. Delegates gathered in New Manila to discuss a wide variety of issues facing our growing vicariate. During the chapter Fr. Milton bestowed the minor orders of lector and acolyte upon several of our clerics. The holidays brought a welcome break from classes for our English students, philosophers, and theologians along with the five clerics involved in the newest program of formation, the regency year. This had them spending every week in our Puso sa Puso Education program in two poor areas in Manila. With the New Year the candidates in the English language program began in earnest the rehearsals for this year's play, "Pinocchio." We're working on how to make his nose grow when he tells a fib. The beginning of the "Year of Mercy" overlapped the closing of the year of the "Consecrated Life," both declared by Pope Francis. Our Loyola Heights students joined a special choir for the ceremonies at the Cubao Cathedral. And we are all ready for our Lenten observances with Ash Wednesday coming rather early this year. Fr. Hassner, Chair How does religion shape transnational norms and the ways in which they are contested or adopted? Although constructivist international relations theory has made significant strides in understanding the role of norms in shaping political outcomes, there has been little research into how religion affects norm dynamics. This dissertation seeks to address this gap by developing a theory of “religious norms”, which I define as standards of proper behavior that arise from actors’ religious beliefs. I argue that while religious norms bear many similarities to secular norms, they differ in that believers understand them to emanate from the highest authority of all, that of the sacred. This can lead religious adherents to treat religious norms as having overriding importance, especially when they perceive them to be under attack from competing norms. When this happens, religious adherents can frame the religious norm as highly salient, constitutive of the faith and under threat, a process that I call “defensive sacralization”.

Hassner, Chair How does religion shape transnational norms and the ways in which they are contested or adopted? Although constructivist international relations theory has made significant strides in understanding the role of norms in shaping political outcomes, there has been little research into how religion affects norm dynamics. This dissertation seeks to address this gap by developing a theory of “religious norms”, which I define as standards of proper behavior that arise from actors’ religious beliefs. I argue that while religious norms bear many similarities to secular norms, they differ in that believers understand them to emanate from the highest authority of all, that of the sacred. This can lead religious adherents to treat religious norms as having overriding importance, especially when they perceive them to be under attack from competing norms. When this happens, religious adherents can frame the religious norm as highly salient, constitutive of the faith and under threat, a process that I call “defensive sacralization”.

ABSTRACT Every Knowable Thing: The Art of Ramon Llull and the Construction of Knowledge Noel Blanco Mourelle This dissertation avers that the circulation of manuscript copies and printed editions of the works of Ramon Llull had a key role in Iberian cultural history and signaled a shift from a Christian logic of conversion to a universal key for organizing all the disciplines of knowledge. As copies of Ramon Llull’s manuscripts traveled from the Black Forest, Majorca, and Paris to be housed in the libraries of early modern institutions, such as the Colegio de San Ildefonso and the Monastery of El Escorial, they formed what I call portable archives of the Art. By reading the inventories of the libraries of these institutions, along with copies of the works of Ramon Llull preserved at the Escorial, the Biblioteca Nacional de Madrid, and the University of Freiburg, my dissertation combines the study of the place of Ramon Llull in the medieval history of ideas and the material features of said portable archives. My dissertation contributes to history of the book studies as it examines a unique case among medieval traditions and shows that the compilation of manuscripts and the elaboration of printed editions repurpose the original idea of the Art. I work with primary sources in Latin, Catalan, Spanish, and Portuguese, attributed to Ramon Llull and to other authors, to trace his influence on early modern authors, such as Pedro de Guevara, Juan de Herrera, Diego de Valadés, and João de Barros.
