NORTON & COMPANY New lark London ~ III • EARLY MODERN 'I' N THE TRADITIONAL VIEW of Greek poetry, a glorious ancient Greece is fol- ,'. lowed by an exciting, if not that well-known, modern Greece, with a fallow , two millennia in between. But in this anthology a host of new translations '. brings to life the poetry not only of Byzantine, but also Venetian, Ottoman, medieval, and newly independent Greece. With the decline of Byzantium and then the fall of Constantinople in 1453, poets throughout the Greek world turned . away from heroic and religious subject matter and focused on the pain and won der of ordinary life. In Stefanos Sachlikis's poem about life in a Cretan jail or the anonymous animal fables of the fourteenth and fifteenth century, we already sense a new aesthetic in which neither Athens and the classical world, nor Con stantinople and Christianity, are the measure of things. Linguistically as well as thematically, poets from the fourteenth century on increasingly moved away from ancient and ecclesiastical models to writing the way people spoke. The eighteenth and nineteenth centuries saw attempts to return to a "purer" language closer to ancient ideals, but ultimately the language of the people prevailed, paving the way for the literary achievements of the twen tieth century. Unlike many cultures in which literature is written in the high lan guage, in Greece poets tend to leave the learned language to the pedants. -

NOSTALGIA, EMOTIONALITY, AND ETHNO-REGIONALISM IN PONTIC PARAKATHI SINGING BY IOANNIS TSEKOURAS DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Musicology in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2016 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Donna A. Buchanan, Chair Professor Emeritus Thomas Turino Professor Gabriel Solis Professor Maria Todorova ABSTRACT This dissertation explores the multilayered connections between music, emotionality, social and cultural belonging, collective memory, and identity discourse. The ethnographic case study for the examination of all these relations and aspects is the Pontic muhabeti or parakathi. Parakathi refers to a practice of socialization and music making that is designated insider Pontic Greek. It concerns primarily Pontic Greeks or Pontians, the descendants of the 1922 refugees from Black Sea Turkey (Gr. Pontos), and their identity discourse of ethno-regionalism. Parakathi references nightlong sessions of friendly socialization, social drinking, and dialogical participatory singing that take place informally in coffee houses, taverns, and households. Parakathi performances are reputed for their strong Pontic aesthetics, traditional character, rich and aesthetically refined repertoire, and intense emotionality. Singing in parakathi performances emerges spontaneously from verbal socialization and emotional saturation. Singing is described as a confessional expression of deeply personal feelings -

The overcast skies and gloomy weather reports forecasting rain were not enough to dampen the spirits of the tens of thousands of Greek Americans who came out to Fifth Avenue to watch or march in the annual Greek Independence Day Parade. Although the threat of bad weather did affect parade turnout, the noticeably smaller crowd made up for its lack of num- bers with exuberance and enthusi- asm. People of all ages waved Greek flags and patriotism ran high, as shouts and cries on behalf of Mace- donia’s Greek identity and against the recent provocations made by Greece’s northern neighbor FY- ROM dominated the Parade. Greece’s recent veto of FYROM’s membership bid at last week’s NA- TO Summit in Bucharest because a mutually acceptable resolution on the latter’s name was not yet reached was reiterated throughout the Parade by emcees, speakers, TNH/COSTAS BEJ marchers and spectators. By cultivating the ethics of an agonistic relation with their ancient predecessors, poets today reinvent cultural literacy and fashion their unique place in literary and intellectual history. But, generally speaking, only through knowledge of the present can the passion for classical antiquity be acquired. Without this knowledge, where could the passion come from? (Nietzsche 1990:340) It has become commonplace today to worry about the decline of cultural literacy. We have all discussed documentations of the diminish- ing interest in our shared (Western or otherwise) intellectual, artistic, and scientific heritage. Educators, journalists, opinion makers, and politicians have diagnosed a gradually weakening transmission of hu- manistic culture to younger generations. That the public no longer has a well-rounded familiarity with literary masterpieces, artistic treasures, historical events, or civic achievements of the past puts at risk the liberal institutions of the public sphere. What binds us together in a common culture may too easily come undone. -

Elsa Davis sings a couple of songs at a birthday party (for more on Davis, see this site's 'about the movie'), and Robert Menzies' character Robert even uses the spines of a cactus to produce musical sounds - presumably these are the "musical effects" credited to the production's designer, Asher Bilu. Apart from the use of a recording by Greek composer Yannis Markopoulos (he has a wiki here), the main music featured at start and close of the film and during a slow set of pans during a performance, is Pergolese's (as per film credits, also Pergolesi, and with a wiki here) Stabat Mater. Hartley Newnham and Jane Edwards are the featured performers who appear in the film: Hartley Newham: Hartley Newnham had previously appeared in director Paul Cox's My First Wife, and at time of writing there was this short CV here. Hartley Newnham's concert and stage experience as a countertenor ranges from medieval to contemporary music theatre. He has composed for theatre, dance and concert performance. He has sung with the Victorian State Opera, in Viennaʼs Summer Opera Series, for the ABC throughout Australia, the BBC, Radio France, and Hong Kong Radio, and with ensembles such as La Romanesca, and has also sung and appeared in the films My First Wife and Cactus by Paul Cox.
