The Time That Remains 2018.10.27 - 2018.11.24 THE TIME 剩余的时间 | 房间 6 号 THAT REMAINS Room No.6 剩余的时间 | 房间 6 号 The Time That Remains 2018.10.27 - 2018.11.24 Grey Cube of Goethe - Institut China, 798 Art District, Bejing Introduction The title of the exhibition "The Time That Remains: Room No.6" borrowed from a book by Giorgio Agamben. He explained that time is three-dimensional rather than linear by analyzing 10 words in the first sentence of Romans, which immediately reminds people of the spatiality of time. Martin Luther, who was also inspired by the Romans, contributed to the formation of modern German. We generally consider Goethe Institute to be only an institution for learning German, and its meaning in China is obviously different: from 1988 to 2004, it was the only western cultural exchange institution permitted by Chinese authorities. It can be said that in the past 30 years, it has become a haven for many Chinese intellectuals to try to understand different culture and pursue spiritual freedom. It is clear that the debate between art and itself, the confrontation between art and political reality, is always accompanied by failures, disagreements, risks... The exhibition will be shown in the Grey Cube of Goethe-Institut China. It is located a former military industrial factory, which was designed by the DDR in 1951 and built in typical Bauhaus style. The renovation design was completed by Albert Speer+ Partner in 2015. This created a paradoxical hybrid of space and political reality. The fiction of time and space is an important material for video works. The moving image can transform the past into a "saved / liberated memory". It permeates linear time by capturing every moment, recalling the past into the present and filling it with the possibility of redemption. The remaining time means the absence of redemption, which cannot be saved, but which always comes. Every moment is the point at which potential events occur, occurrence will come at any time, time will end at any time... The past is not a lower stage in the progressive narrative, it has always been about the present. This exhibition does not want to be an exhibition that follows a particular thesis. Instead, it diverges and asks in the future or the remaining time, in a "cruel reality", in the "ruins of the revolution" and the "desert of capitalism", in the constant production of heterotopia, what else are the possibilities about cultural exchange in different contexts? Remainers are those who are disjointed and inversely associated with time, who are the artists, the characters, and the audiences of this exhibition. Through the alienation from the time, to capture a moment that has not been, to ask what is the afterimage... Grey Cube is like a small cinema, the video works are projected separately, this room replaced at any time by different scenes, it cuts a window into another world, a mixture of living room, prison, bathroom and "pseudo"room... This exhibition is composed of three parts, jointly presents the thinking on the "structure of time, identity of space, manifestation of events, strategy of action, and the present that has not been passed". The first part are the 6 video works from Germany, artists including Dani Gal, Judith Hopf, Bjørn Melhus, Hila Peleg, Julian Rosefeldt Clemens Von Wedemeyer. Each work in this part is closely related to different timelines, different, spatial identities. The respective stories are linked with history and form a complex, multi-interpretable network structure. In their works, the identity of space / place is divided into different levels, and the real and fictional moments are interwoven with the complexity of space and place. In the second part, through Online Call Program, six Chinese artists were invited: Deng Dekuan | Hu Wei | Jiang Li | Tang Chao | Wang Haiqing | Payne Zhu, who are not older than 30 years old. In the past 30 years, the dramatic changes in China's social space have become a very important part of everyone's life. Their works are also related to the room. By opening up different timelines, artists pierced individual experiences in the current way of life and suspended the rules in a unique way. In the third part of the exhibition, Prof.Wu Guanjun and Prof.Jiang Yuhui will hold a dialogue with curator Ma Wen on 27.10.2018, it interprets the remaining time and the relationship between body and space. Six local residents with different identities were invited on 28.10.2018. They spontaneously improvise about their own story related the room, like a "cinema in brain" that can not be censored. He made contact with Simon Wiesenthal, a former concentration camp prisoner who dedicated his life to locating and bringing Nazi criminals to justice. Wiesenthal saw this connection as an opportunity to access information about the Third Reich but also as a small victory for himself as a Holocaust survivor. By combining fictional scenes of a meeting between the two and documentary based material like letters, biographies, and interviews, Wie aus der Ferne imagines Wiesenthal and Speer's relationship through the lens of a short text by Ludwig Wittgenstein about memory images, their connection to the Holocaust memory discourse, and its representation in film. Judith Hopf Judith Hopf (born 1969, Karlsruhe/DE) lives and works in Berlin. Lives Between Lives Between March 8—May 6, 2017 Aslan Gaisumov Dani Gal Pawel Kruk Runo Lagomarsino Dana Levy Otobong Nkanga Enrique Ramirez Elham Rokni Clarissa Tossin Co-curated by: Joseph del Pesco International Director, KADIST Sergio Edelsztein Director of the Center for Contemporary Art, Tel Aviv Thanks to Chen Tamir and Ekaterina Razdumina, Leon and Karen Amitai, and Aleca Le Blanc Introduction The exhibition begins with a recognition of the growing number of international artists working and living between two places. Artists who were born in one country and, for a variety of reasons, have crossed oceans and borders to live in another. Because of this transition, their artistic practice and cultural identity is caught in tension between their country of residence and country of origin. Some of the artists in the show migrated with their families as children, or were born somewhere else, but carry with them another culture through their parents, or through the color of their skin, and chose to make this paradox a aspect or impetus for their work. Others migrated later as adults, in a conscious move to improve their professional possibilities. Others simply move to survive. In this way, these artists choose to live “in between” two places. Developing their personal and professional life in one place (working, raising a family), but when producing their work they address social and historical issues relevant “back home.” Many of them produce exclusively in their country or region of origin. Upon returning they realize they are both insider and outsider, and in a sense inhabit a third culture that exists between the two places.

  • To the Press Dani
To the press Dani Gal «Do you suppose he didn't know what he was doing, or knew what he was doing and didn't want anyone to know?» 9 November 2013 – 19 January 2014 Press preview: Friday, 8 November 2013, from 11 a.m. on Opening: Friday, 8 November 2013, 6 p.m. The starting point of the films and sound installations by Dani Gal (*1975, Jerusalem, IL) are mostly existing historical documentaries which the artist examines and subtly manipulates or artistically reconstructs on the basis of his research. In addition to conventional text and image analysis he uses language and sound to exemplify his central themes of history, the writing of history and the associated mechanisms of selection and exclusion which define how certain events are perceived. He is concerned with putting formed opinions on historical events into perspective or giving them new impulses. In his exhibition Dani Gal presents the short film Wie aus der Ferne (As from Afar), co-produced by Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen, which is based on a text by Ludwig Wittgenstein about memory images. To what extent are images of a memory different from images that come with expectation from images of a daydream? With this question as a central theme he examines the friendship between Simon Wiesenthal and Albert Speer. The former was a Holocaust survivor who dedicated his life to the search for Nazi criminals, the latter was Hitler’s architect and confidant who showed regret after being sentenced to 20 years imprisonment and was prepared to take responsibility for Nazi crimes.

MAI 2018 / SAMSTAG, 26. MAI 2018, AB 19 UHR SCHIRN KUNSTHALLE FRANKFURT GEBÜHR 9 €, ERMÄSSIGT 7 €, ABENDKASSE, KEIN VORVERKAUF ANMELDUNG: 069.299882-112, [email protected] IN ENGLISCHER SPRACHE Noch bis zum 27. Mai 2018 präsentiert die Schirn mit „Power to the People.

An die Presse Dani Gal «Do you suppose he didn't know what he was doing, or knew what he was doing and didn't want anyone to know?» 9. November 2013 – 19.

Publication Series of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna Eva Blimlinger, Andrea B. Braidt, Karin Riegler (Series Eds.) Volume 19 On the Publication Series We are pleased to present this new volume in the publication series of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. The series, published in cooperation with our highly committed partner Sternberg Press, is devoted to central themes of con temporary thought about art practices and art theories. The volumes in the series comprise collected contributions on subjects that form the focus of dis course in terms of art theory, cultural studies, art history, and research at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, and represent the quintessence of international study and discussion taking place in the respective fields. Each volume is pub lished in the form of an anthology, edited by staff members of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Authors of high international repute are invited to write con tributions dealing with the respective areas of emphasis. Research activities such as international conferences, lecture series, institutespecific research focuses, or research projects serve as points of departure for the individual volumes. With Putting Rehearsals to the Test: Practices of Rehearsal in Fine Arts, Film, Theater, Theory, and Politics we are launching volume nineteen of the series.

  • Any Resemblance to Real Persons, Living Or Dead, Is Purely Coincidental
Jean-Claude Freymond-Guth Limmatstrasse 270 Any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental. 8005 Zürich, Switzerland DANI GAL T +41 (0)44 240 04 81 offi[email protected] www.freymondguth.com Wed - Fr 12 – 18hrs 1 September - 13 October 2012 Saturday 12 – 17hrs Or by appointment Opening 31 August 2012, 18hrs We are very pleased to open our new gallery space at Löwenbräu in Zurich with a solo show by Dani Gal (*1975, Jerusalem, lives in Berlin). Gal has received much attention and acclaim in the past years through his participation at the Venice Biennal and Istanbul Biennal in 2011 as well a.o. institutional shows at Frankfurter Kunstverein, New Museum NY, Zabludowicz Collection London, Kunsthalle Vienna and Wattis Institute San Francisco this year. He is currently nominated for the Nationalgalerie Award for Young Art in Berlin. By means of intensive research and examination of historical images, texts and sound docu- ments of past and/or current political and cultural occurrences, Gal interrogates how personal and collective history and memorization is produced, selected and passed on through time and space. For this exhibition Gal works with the excessive media coverage of one of the most iconic terror attacks which took place during the Munich Olympics in 1972 - September 5th marks the 40th anniversary of the attack. More than ten films, both fiction and documentary, have re- enacted this event. Using these films as a reference point, Gal creates the film installation Any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental., that consists of two video pieces and one object.
