Turanganui-a-Kiwa Under-15s are a combined team of students from Campion College, Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Nga Uri a Maui, Lytton High School, Hawaiiki Hou, Horouta Wananga and Manutuke, and have a haka to call their own. Mataroria Lemon — a father of one of the players and a kapa haka tutor — composed the kupu (words) of the haka to unify the boys and their kaupapa. “It was thinking about the team we have. bringing them together with a common cause.” People often thought of the haka as an element of battle but really it was performed to change the state of mind to be a collective. The players came up with actions to the lyrics, which Lemon said was about taking kokoraho (ownership). “All I did was write the words. We hope they perform it in a way that has meaning to them.” The team had sessions to learn the haka and the meaning of it.
