Foreword

2019 has been an outstanding year for sporting achievement by students from the South West School Sport Association and I take this opportunity to pay tribute to each of them. Their respective efforts are highlighted in this the 29th Annual Year Book of the Sydney South West School Sport Association, the first to be in electronic form.

In addition to recognising successful students, this Year Book also acknowledges the many teachers who have worked tirelessly as coaches, sports organisers, zone executive and conveners. Their selfless commitment to school sport at all levels has enabled so much to be achieved.

This year has seen some tremendous achievements by the Association both on and off the playing field. These include:

 5 SSW Teams winning respective championships across PSSA and CHS  14 Primary Students selected in NSWPSSA Teams  71 Students selected in NSWCHS Teams or higher  91 Teachers directly involved in the Association as Members of the Executive, Conveners, Coaches or Managers.  Numerous others involved as Officials at Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics Championships.  An increase in the number of primary schools releasing teachers to officiate at SSW events allowing for better quality in the programs as well as an increasing understanding that for the students to be provided for, personnel need to be released to run the programs.  Greater opportunities for teachers to be educated in, and feel more comfortable to play a greater part in School Sport in general.  Continuation of the Schools Encouragement program – Recognition of SSW Schools who show strong support for High Potential and Gifted Sporting Programs at Association level.  Continued partnerships with the Directors of the varying Principal Networks in SSW and the Association.  The affiliation of South Infants School to the East Hills Zone PSSA to allow those infants students who are eligible to have access to the representative sporting pathway in Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics.  The investigation of accessing the ‘Participation Space’ for the students and schools of the Association.  More importantly, the provision of opportunity for 85,000 students within .

SCHOOL SPORT is for all students, not only the elite, as everyone benefits from improving their fitness, refining their skills and learning to be a team member. Through recognition of success and acknowledgement of achievement, all students are encouraged to continue their participation in sport.

I would like to acknowledge the outstanding leadership and commitment of Anthony Murphy and his team again this year and congratulate them on the successful move of the Sydney South West School Sports Association to the new office at Turrella.

Finally, I would like to congratulate the executive of the Association on their efforts in producing this Year Book. Publication of a Year Book has been a tradition of the Association and catalogues the outstanding history of the Association.

WARREN FINN Director, Educational Leadership Chipping Norton Principals Network Metropolitan South Operational Directorate Public Schools NSW

In 2019 Sydney South West hosted one State event - the NSWPSSA Girls’ Championships at Raby. Thank you to Jason Ellsmore, Matthew Innes and Chris Whitten for convening the competition and showcasing SSW at this event, as well as to Anthony Murphy and Lianne Essex for their expert administration and management of officials, students, support staff and parents. Congratulations also to the following SSW teams and their coaches/managers, who excelled at their State Championships during the year: Girls’ Basketball – 1st place 11s – Runners Up (2nd place) and Girls’ Hockey who finished 3rd It is pleasing to note that many of our current conveners, coaches and managers have been re- elected to their positions in 2020, although some have chosen not to seek re-appointment. Of these particular appreciation is extended to :- David Ottman – Opens Rugby League Convener. David has held this position for 6 years, managing and organising the teams, officiating at carnivals and mentoring coaches admirably. David also holds the position of President of the Horsley Zone and we wish him luck in continuing this role in the future and extend our thanks to him for his service to SSW sport. Ross Morrison – Leader, NSW School Sport – Ross has officially retired from the Department of Education and on behalf of SSW, I would like to say a fond farewell to him, as he was a previous RSO of our Association. Not only was Ross a colleague and mentor to many of our teachers in sport, he is someone who has been a friend to all of us here at the SSW Association. A new initiative to highlight this year was the convening of a SSW PSSA Sport Forum. Our Association invited Zone Presidents, Principals and Executive members from the primary schools across SSW to join together and showcase the roles of each level in sport, highlight what is working well and discuss the challenges faced in the administration and support of sporting programs today. The feedback from the forum was overwhelmingly positive and we are looking forward to convening more of these events in 2020. In Term 3, current and previous SSW Presidents, Vice Presidents, Conveners, Managers and Coaches of sport, along with their Zone counterparts, had the opportunity to come together and celebrate the 50th anniversary of SSW Association. This event was held at the Liverpool Catholic Club and was a fantastic opportunity for teachers both past and present to meet up again, reminisce and marvel at just how quickly time goes by. We viewed an historical montage of photos, shared some laughs and took the time to thank one and all for their important contributions to the history of Sydney South West Sport. Thank you very much to Anthony Murphy, Lianne Essex and Ross Higgins, who spent many hours organising this celebration and who sorted through our archives to put this wonderful event together. The slide show they produced is a wonderful artifact to pass on to future officials and who knows, some of us might even be around to share some stories of today at the next big milestone SSW event! Congratulations to these students and teachers for your achievements this year. Assistance at Sydney South West trials and major carnivals was also provided by schools who supplied student officials. Our appreciation and thanks is extended to the students, Principals and organising teachers at Westfields SHS, Bass HS, Elderslie HS, Camden HS, Bossley Park HS, Bradbury PS and Rosemeadow PS. Finally, my appreciation and gratitude goes to all delegates, conveners, managers and coaches who attend our Council meetings and implement our sporting programs. It is your efforts, dedication and commitment to excellence, along with the many out-of-school hours of work that enables representational pathways to occur in all 3 levels of sport. Sincere thanks to the SSW PSSA Executive who share in the running of SSW PSSA – Dean Kellaway, Matt Ryan, Chris Whitten, Jason Ellsmore, Stephen Gray and Brent Kunkler. Your commitment to policy, access and equity in sport, along with your many dedicated efforts and time in organising sport is to be commended. I appreciate your collective knowledge and good humour, both of which assist me greatly in overseeing the running of the Association. To Anthony Murphy, the SSW SCO and Lianne Essex, the SSW SCSO, I offer my thanks, gratitude and sincere appreciation for the outstanding work you do on behalf of our students and teachers. Through very trying circumstances this year, you have both always ensured that the Association and its schools are fully supported with your high level of skill and expertise in administration and organisation. Thanks also to Matt Mee for stepping into Lianne’s role when needed. We are lucky to have you at SSW! PSSA is a recognised Gifted and Talented program within the public school education system that continues only with the support of school teachers, their Principals and Executive Teams. I am truly appreciative of the high standard of competition organised at all levels of sport and wish everyone involved a very Merry Christmas and prosperous New Year. Have a safe and happy holiday after the close of term 4.

2019 again saw SSW achieve outstanding success. The region continues to produce high quality athletes both in individual and team sports. SSW teachers continued to be involved as CHS sport conveners/team officials across many sports. SSW held 2 highly Successful Metropolitan AWD Athletic Gala Days. Seven SSW students received the prestigious CHS Blues Award. SSW in conjunction with the School Sport Unit provided opportunities for Professional development in the sports of: Cricket, Golf, Rugby League, Football, Athletics, Basketball, Athletics/Swimming “Meet Manager”, Austwim, Australian Football, Concussion, Softball, Netball, Sports Medicine, Hockey, Teaching Physical Activity to Students with Disabilities and General sport organisation. The Association has promoted in all affiliated schools the possibility of Teacher Professional Learning in line with NESA and the accreditation process. The SSW Yearbook continues to be a highly professional and informative online publication which is a showcase for the association. The development of the Yearbook is a collective team effort by many in the association led by Anthony and Lianne. Our three major carnivals (Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics) continue to be extremely highly successful events. Student participation across all Zones is on the increase. The success of these carnivals can largely be attributed to the fantastic support from the host venues and all officials involved. The foundation of success for SSW starts with the tremendous dedication, commitment and hard work of the conveners, managers, coaches and officials. They are a wonderful group of public school teachers who give up countless hours to ensure the students under their leadership gain a wonderful experience in regional school sport. On behalf of the Association can I say thank you for a job well done in 2019. Your efforts are very much appreciated. The following people did not seek re-election for 2019 and the Association wishes them every success for the future: Cameron King – Baseball, Jessica Moody – Girls Basketball, Julie Toaetolu – Girls Rugby Union, Joanne Macdermid – Netball, Andrea Kezic – Squash and Girls Tennis, Sophita Viravong – Boys Volleyball, Nicole Tate – Girls’ Hockey, Mitchell Porter – Rugby league, Jason Conroy – Principal’s Rep, Paul Carson – Vice President. Both Jason and Paul have been long standing SSW executive members operating in a professional and supportive manner at all times. Their leadership, advice and guidance to the executive team has been highly valued and appreciated. Thank you Jason and Paul for your service to SSW secondary sport staff and students. The Secondary Executive of Adam Reid, Daniel Brown, Kim Oates, Ben Condon, Paul Carson, Darryn Avery and Principal’s rep Jason Conroy have worked closely in leading and managing the Association. Their professionalism, experience and dedication have been invaluable and this has contributed to the positive outcomes achieved by the Association throughout 2019. My sincere thanks to you all. To Anthony Murphy, our Sport Coordinator Officer and Lianne Essex our Office Manager the Association would like to acknowledge the excellent work you both do in every aspect of operating Regional Secondary Sport in SSW. The Association remains a powerful sporting body largely due to your superb sports administration capabilities. We admire and respect all the great work you both do for the Association and give you our sincere thanks. Personally, the support you both provide myself is most appreciated. The priority of sport in the school curriculum as seen by schools and in particular Senior School Executive remains a concern. The Association has stepped up its campaign to address this issue by way of more regular contact with Directors and Principals. The upcoming forum will provide an opportunity for many SSW school sport stakeholders and supporters to come together and work together to continue to grow the association including focusing on the promotion of staff and students involvement. Our priorities for 2020 will include:  GROWING/ENCOURAGING school based personnel for school sport activities.  Highlighting physical education and sport as a true curriculum area  Investigating the growth areas and possible re-allocation of schools within zones or options for students at representative events.  Acknowledging the outstanding work of School Sport personnel. As I am not seeking re-election, this is my last report as SSW President. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time involved in SSW school sport since 1998. I am truly thankful and honored to have been given the opportunity to serve the association in my roles as Carnival Official, Carnival Manager, Coach, Manager, Vice President and President. This is the premier school sport region in CHS and the memories and experiences I have had I will treasure forever. A special acknowledgement to my executive colleagues both current and past including Ross Higgins, Anthony Murphy and Lianne Essex for their support and friendship. I do hope to be involved again within the association sometime in the future.

History of the Region

Prior to 1969: The Region now known as Sydney South West was absorbed into the Education Regions of Metropolitan West and St. George. During 1969: The Education Region of Liverpool was established, but it was not until 1970 that many of the schools now in the Region came under Liverpool. The Liverpool Region Schools Sports Association was formed. The new Region's colours were bottle green and tangerine, with its emblem being the 'LIVERBIRD' originating off Liverpool City's Coat of Arms. During 1982: The name of the Region was changed to Metropolitan South West, in response to areas such as Campbelltown, Camden, Fairfield and Bankstown developing within the Region. With the change in name the Sports Association changed its colours to bottle green and white. During 1997: With the restructure of the Department of School Education, regions were dismantled and Areas came into existence. The Association was named Sydney South West Area. We retained our colours and emblem. Presently: The Association develops Talented Child Programs in over 30 sports which can be accessed by the 110,000 students of the Region. It also aims at improving school sporting programs by increasing involvement of staff and students. Even in our short history the Region has produced many outstanding athletes who have gone on to represent Australia at the Open Age group. This list is far from complete and any assistance you may offer on the Region's Sporting History please do not hesitate to phone, write or email the Association Sports Office.

REGIONAL TRIALS

Date: Wednesday 27 March 2019 Venue: Bob Prenter Reserve

Zone Placings:

1st Razorback 1 2nd Campbelltown 3rd Semi-East Hills 4th Semi-Liverpool 5th Razorback 2 6th The Fields 7th Lansdowne/Bankstown/Green Valley combined 8th Horsley This year’s SSW AFL trials saw over 130 students from ten different zones compete in beautiful conditions at Bob Prenter Reserve. It was great to see eight teams, each of which was successful in having at least one player selected in the SSW AFL team to play in May. Whilst there was some very competitive games and tight finishes throughout the day, the Razorback 1 team was a dominant force and proved to be too strong and go on to be this year’s carnival champions.

STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

Date: 21 – 23 May 2019 Venue: Penshurst

Carnival Placings

1st CIS 2nd MacKillop 3rd Sydney East 4th South Coast 5th Riverina 6th Sydney North 7th Polding 8th North Coast 9th Sydney West 10th Hunter 11th Sydney South West 12th Barrier 13th Western The SSWSSA Australian Football team of 2019 played with a high level of desire, grit and skilfulness. The passion and pressure they applied in every game was a great endorsement for selection as representatives for Sydney South West especially considering almost half the team was in Year 5. This year’s carnival saw an extremely high standard of AFL across all teams with some extremely close games and upsets across the 3 pools. The carnival will be remembered as unique with 2 teams moving outside the top 4 (Riverina for the first time in carnival history). All of our boys improved as players from the opportunity to compete at this level and finished the carnival as better footballers and hopefully friends for life. The running of the carnival in Penshurst was seamless and played in beautiful conditions for the 3 days. This State Carnival is by far the largest sports-based State carnival held in NSW this year with 286 students participating. The Sydney South West team performed well with a couple of good wins and some narrow losses to teams of a similar standard. The team was positively supported by a large number of family members who were a great help to team management across the 3 days.

Outstanding Player: Ethan Matthews - Appin PS, Benjamin Dean - Appin PS, Oscar Lindbom - Hammondville PS, Ryan Jarvis - Kearns PS.

REGIONAL TRIALS

Date: Wednesday 3 April 2019 Venue: Carnes Hill

The 2019 SSW Australian Football Trials were held at Greenway Park, Carnes Hill, on Wednesday 3 April, 2019. There were 25 students in attendance. Picking 22 players from 25 to represent SSW was always going to be a difficult task. Two teams were formed and a 6 quarter 9 a side game was played. Smaller numbers and a smaller field were able to highlight the impressive kicking skills and ability of students to win contested footy.

In the end 22 students were selected to represent the Sydney South West SSA at the Sydney Championships with the team being dominated by students from Westfield’s Sports High school.

Outstanding Player: William Lockett - Westfields SHS, Joshua Stephan - Westfields SHS, Connor Anagnostopoulos - Westfields SHS, Vaviakila Duwali - Westfields SHS, Lachlan Watt – Ambarvale HS.

The Sydney South West team had a set back with the withdrawal of a player just prior to the tournament with an injury limiting a squad to 15 players. The SSW team had a respectable Championship winning 5, drawing 1 and losing 1 before the conclusion of the week. The team had to dig deep on many occasions due to pitching restrictions but managed to rally together during the tight games and come through with some outstanding individual displays.

Despite impressive victories over Western (38-24), Hunter (45-40) and North Coast (42-32) we were left in a Playoff for 9th due to a countback. Our captain, Caleb led our team well with his scoring, ball handling and positive leadership. Matiasi was a standout under the basket, causing havoc for other teams with his size and soft touch. These 2 boys were ably supported by Adam, Noah and Jabez who led the team in the back court with their passing and teamwork. Jordan and Luke played their role very well, scoring and defending well. Zakaria, Sidney and Curtis were strong on the boards and improved every single game. It was a great team performance and I congratulate all the boys on their efforts. A huge thank you to the wonderful group of parents who positively supported all the boys in every game. It was an absolute pleasure to coach such a fantastic group of kids. I wish you all the very best for your future sporting endeavours boys.

SSW had a great start, day one, saw SSW successful against North Coast and Western. Both convincing wins in the tournament. Day two started well with a win against Riverina. The second game of the day was against cross city rivals, Sydney East, the top two teams in Pool 1. It was a well contested game, the lead changing several times. SSW had their first loss and had to play the top seeded team, Sydney North in the Semi Final. SSW played an excellent team game despite going down to the eventual premiers. The last game of the tournament for SSW was the playoff for Bronze and it was a rematch against Sydney East. This time SSW made no mistake, they wanted the Bronze more and won a close game 48-42. The NSW CHS Lawn Bowls Championships were held at Bateau Bay Bowling Club. Sydney South West began their campaign in Game 1 v North Coast with a win to both rinks skipped by Mia Hotson and Tameaka Hedges. Games 2, 3 and 4 against South Coast, Sydney North and Western regions, were tightly contested, high quality matches, however both rinks went down in all games. This resulted in SSW playing off for 7th and 8th against Sydney North. The effort of all team members was outstanding and after another high standard game, our final placing was 8th. Throughout the championships the team moral, sportsmanship, resilience and camaraderie of the team was outstanding. Being a team member short did not mean they would be uncompetitive. A special thankyou goes to Lily Astley from Sydney West Region for stepping in and assisting SSW. Mia Hotson was selected in the NSWCHS team for Super School Series and given the responsibility of team Captain. It has been an honour and a privilege to have had the opportunity to support these students at this year’s championships. They are a talented group of students who are all available for SSW in 2020. Our first match against Polding started well after a good opening partnership with the bat. However, with the loss of a few , SSW succumbed to tight bowling, scoring 10 for 125 in 40 overs. Polding took advantage of their solid bowling effort and easily passed our score in the 19th over. R. Collison 23, A. Simpson 22, R. Luthra 1/9. Our second game against Sydney East proved to be a much more even game with SSW solidly to score 9/155 off their 50 overs. With a chase that went down to the wire, Sydney East worked hard to eventually pass the sore in the second last over. A. Simpson 54, J. Shun Wah 1/13. What proved to be an even tighter match, SSW bowled well on a very fast outfield to dismiss Hunter for 174 in the 48th over. SSW came out with determination and were cruising at 1/113 in the 25th over. With the loss of 3 wickets in 6 overs, Hunter slowed our progress and made a game of it, with SSW passing their score on the very last ball of the game. A. Simpson 52 & 2/17, R. Collison 25. In our final match against North Coast, SSW batted cautiously in a reduced match to score 9/136 off their 40 overs. North Coast batted well to pass our score in the 31st over with the loss of only 3 wickets. D. Chand 35, R. Collison 26. R. Luthra 3/3.

SSW selected a young side of mixed experience but immense talent with high hopes of improving on last year’s results. The first match of the tournament saw us up against Sydney Easy. We put together a magnificent opening innings of 5- 237 with Ethan Jamieson (90) and Eshaan Pathak (31) setting us on a good path, before Mahsen Narvel showed his talent with a 62* from 49 balls. Unfortunately our opponents were too good passing us with 4 overs to spare. Round 2 saw a battle with Riverina where a good bowling effort saw us restrict them to 8-185 off 50 overs, with the spin twins of Haider Ali (2-35 off 10) and Owen Cole (1-35 off 10), in good form. Abhijeet Dandyan (33) and Jarrod Brown (47) had us in great stead at 2-90, before a collapse of 8-68 saw us bundled out for 159. Game 3 and we were against North Coast, who bowled us out for 127 in 39 overs. Blake Pearson highlighted his all-round talent with a handy 30*. Unfortunately on a flat , Haider (1-32) Owen (1-22) and Blake (1-22) all toiled hard but eventually we were run down for another loss. Our final match was against a strong Sydney North Team. Ethan Jamieson highlighted his growing reputation as a top batter scored a run a ball 80 to put on a solid early stand with Abhijeet Dandyan (30). Leading us to a total of 214. With 2 early wickets to Jake Langdon finished with great figures of 4-27 in another close loss. Our best performed player over the tournament was Ethan Jamieson who took out the SSW Alan Davidson Point score Merit. His total of 244 points (194 runs, 2 wickets and 1 catch) was the Leading Run Scorer for the Tournament to go with his Selection in the CHS 1st XI for the upcoming All Schools Tournament in 2020. By the end of the first day the first goal had been reached, two wins and we had topped the pool. Sydney South West again fought hard in the quarter final against Sydney North to gain the lead just before the final whistle to progress to the semi-finals, winning 2-1. Unfortunately, even with some outstanding goal keeping Sydney South West were millimetres away from the win as the post denied them the win before the Sydney West player held their nerve to win 4-3 on penalties. 1st Polding 2nd Sydney West 3rd MacKillop 4th CIS 5th South Coast 6th Sydney South West 7th Sydney North 8th North Coast This year the Primary Golf Championships were held at the stunning Blackheath Golf Club in the Blue Mountains. We were somehow blessed with amazing weather for the 3 rounds of the championships, which enabled some fantastic golf to be played. The Championships will now always begin with an Ambrose event on the Tuesday – an extremely popular decision from the NSWPSSA which enables all teams to play as a team before the 2 individual days kick off. Sydney South West – consisting of Rachel Butler, Mirabelle Naaman, Harry Gourlay and Joey Eason, performed extremely well and finished with a very respectful score of -3. Overall the team finished 3rd on the day! With the fun of the Ambrose now out of the way, we turned our attention to the more serious part of the championship. Blackheath is not only a challenging golf course, but an extremely tough walk for the players. Sydney South West had some fantastic results throughout these 2 days. Harry Gourlay (Year 5), Rachel Butler (Year 5) and Joey Eason (Year 3 – playing in his first NSWPSSA event) performed exceptionally well. All three players had many highlights and should be proud of their results. Unfortunately for Harry, he missed out on making the State team by 1 shot. With all three players eligible again next year, I look forward to seeing how they can all build on their success of 2019. The story of the carnival belonged to Mirabelle Naaman (Year 5) of Fairfield West PS. Playing in her first SSW team, Mirabelle finished day 1 with a wonderful 81 in tough, windy conditions. Once the initial nerves had settled, she played some wonderful golf and would finish day one equal 1st (the top 4 girls qualify for the state team). With the day 2 conditions much easier for all players, and much more conducive for scoring, Mirabelle knew she needed to play as well, if not better to give herself a chance against some really talented opposition. She did just that, and more. Mirabelle finished the day shooting 77, highlighted by 3 birdies along the way. With a total of 134, Mirabelle was crowned girls champion for 2019 by a whopping 8 shots! This is the first time SSW have had an individual winner in the 20 years the championships have been held. She will now travel to Toowoomba in November to represent SSW and NSW in the School Sport Australia Championships. State Selections: Mirabelle Naaman – Fairfield West PS. Matthew Innes Convener

The lead up to the championship wasn’t as planned but the team was ready to thrive and do their best in every game. The NSW CHS Championship this year was held down on the boarder at Albury. We had many hurdles along the way but this did not faze our boys as they consistently showed sportsmanship in all matches, gave it everything they had and supported their teams mates the whole of the Championship. The team continued to build momentum and team cohesion throughout their pool games. Hard work gained the respect among the other teams and proved they would have a battle on their hands when playing SSW. The effort, sportsmanship and the behaviour of the team was excellent all week. All players are to be congratulated for their positive attitude, hard work and dedication throughout the championship. REGIONAL TRIALS

A new format saw all 4 teams well balanced which allowed for some great Rugby League to be played. It was great to see quality rugby league being displayed through team spirit, cohesion and sportsmanship. All players played in two 30 minute games with less reserves on each team for maximum involvement. With less games being played, it was of benefit to the representative players concerning player burnout and injuries. Many of the Zone coaches commented on the success of the trials with the fairer and more even format. A great day of quality Rugby League supporting the development of Schoolboy Rugby League in SSW.

Date: Tuesday 7 May 2019 Venue: Forestville

The team looked to be very strong in the lead up to the Sydney Championships after three good training sessions. The Under 18’s Sydney South West team got off to great start with the forward pack dominating up front. This allowed the outside backs plenty of space and some great tries were scored. Both games was played with great intensity and competiveness and both teams provided a great contest for both the spectators and selectors. Congratulations to Mitchell Porter (coach) for a well thought out campaign that allowed all the players to show their abilities on the field, which resulted in Sydney South West maintaining their unbeaten streak over the last few years.

1st Sydney North 2nd CIS 3rd Sydney East 4th Sydney West 5th Sydney South West 6th Hunter 7th MacKillop 8th Polding 9th South Coast 10th Western 11th North Coast 12th North West 13th Riverina The venue for this year’s State Carnival was Richmond NSW. We were in Pool B this year with Sydney North and Western. Our first game was against Western, who started out strong but could not hold. Final score was 45-0 and a good start for our tournament. Our second game against Sydney North was tough, they were a well-trained unit with a strong understanding of the game. While we never gave up and had a strong second half, the final score was 39-7 loss. The second-place finish in the pool rounds put us against CIS on day 2. There were opportunities for both teams throughout the game to score, with both teams working to the final whistle. Unfortunately, we didn’t seize as many chances as CIS and finished 26-7. This left us playing for 5th -8th position in the competition and tough game against Polding to win. A strong start saw us cross to score from the kick-off. Polding responded later that half, but we retaliated just before half time to lead 14-7 at the break. Unfortunately, after some great rugby in the second half, one of the Polding players went down injured and could not be moved until medical assistance arrived. The game ended in a victory to us, 14-7, and saw us playing for 5th/6th on the final day of the competition. We finished the tournament defeating Hunter 24-5 in an exciting match played with great sportsmanship and skill, putting us in 5th place overall. I would like to thank the Parents and Families who came and supported us. At all times our parents were supportive and encouraging, and it was a pleasure working with you.

Date: 5 March, 2019 Venue: Campbelltown Showground A strong turn out by boys from across the region provided selectors with a competitive field of players to choose from. The morning session saw NSW Rugby Union Development Officers put the students through a number of drills to test and showcase their individual skills in key areas such as catch-pass, ruck clean out and set piece play. In the afternoon players were divided into teams and competed in full contact rugby at pace. All students displayed perseverance and dedication in the heat and a very strong training squad was taken through before further selection for the CHS championships.

1st Sydney West 2nd Hunter 3rd Central Coast 4th North West 5th Sydney North East 6th North Coast 7th Sydney South West 8th Sydney East 9th South Coast 2019 was another year of mixed results for Sydney South West at the Combined High Schools Championships. The first game resulted in a 21-0 victory over Sydney North West. A hard fought 19-0 loss to North West followed with a number of key players experiencing fatigue due last minute withdrawals significantly reducing the bench. Day 2 of the carnival saw the boys taking on Sydney North East in the last game of the day where despite a few passages of strong team play, the boys were outplayed and fell 26-12. On the Final Day of the carnival, with pride and selections still to play for, the reduced squad put in a valiant effort with all players eager to support their team and represent the region. Overcoming adversity, the team delivered a convincing 33-14 victory over Sydney East in a match that rebuilt confidence and displayed the outstanding rugby for which Sydney South West is renowned. An overall placing of 7th does not accurately represent the pride and heart with which these boys played, especially considering the lack of substitutions. All players are commended for their dedication and fortitude.

The 2019 SSW Secondary Boys’ Softball team applied themselves with the highest level of sportsmanship and skill at the CHS Secondary Boys’ Softball Championship. These extremely dedicated young players stepped up to the challenge and played 5 consecutive games on day one of the tournament in hot and extremely windy conditions to emerge undefeated. They then proceeded to show their dominance and completed their clean sweep of the tournament by winning their final 3 games before taking a well-earned rest in the last round with a bye. All players displayed an outstanding level of skill and commitment to the team. They benefited greatly from the cohesive approach of the players and their willingness to support and work cooperatively with one another which was further show cased with the selection of five team members into the Secondary Boys CHS Softball Team. Congratulations to this year’s MVP Hayden Shaw, an outstanding athlete and inspirational player who lead the team with dignity and respect for all the players in his team as well as opposition. A special thanks to all those who supported the team during the State Championship and especially to Sutherland Shire Softball Association for hosting the 2019 CHS Secondary Boys Softball Tournament. This year’s tournament was one of the most hotly contested in recent years with some unprecedented upsets occurring amongst the top teams. The first day of games saw the girls demonstrate the level of sportsmanship and respect we at SSW are proud to expect of our players. SSW took the field in the first two games against two decidedly less skilled country teams from North West Region and North Coast. Throughout the games the players demonstrated respect and sense of fair play whereby they played not solely to win but to allow the other team a sense of dignity and joy in the game. In extremely hot conditions the girls persevered to win all 3 games on the second day with the final day resulting in a defeat to the ultimate state champions Sydney West. All the players are to be commended on their performance and inability to concede defeat. All players displayed an outstanding level of skill and commitment to the team. The team benefited greatly from the cohesive approach of the players and their willingness to support and work cooperatively with one another. Congratulations to this year’s MVP, Amber Gunn, an outstanding athlete and inspirational player who lead the team with dignity and respect for all the players in her team as well as opposition. A special thanks to all those who supported the team during the State Championship and especially to Riverina Softball Association for hosting the 2019 CHS Secondary Girls Softball Tournament. Day One of the tournament saw SSW take on Sydney West and Sydney East. We were defeated by both of these teams. Day 2 we were up against Riverina, Sydney North and Hunter. Our girls had their first win against Riverina. Throughout the rest of the day SSW showed their team spirit and camaraderie. Day 3 pitted us against Polding, where we fought hard and played well. We were defeated by North West in the playoff game leading us into the final day. We played off against Western for 11th place for the girls and 12th place for the boys. We were able to finish off well with the girls getting their second win and the boys getting their first. Although, our kids did not get the result they wanted in the tennis, their positive attitude throughout the week was outstanding and the many friendships created was nice to see.

15s Boys Category 1st Nathan Porley 2nd Lachlan Cosgrove

Again in 2019 we conducted 2 age group individual championships. There were over 40 students across the 2 divisions who competed in the SSW Individual Championships highlighting the wide ranging draw card of Tennis throughout the region. Macarthur and Westfields were the bulk of the regions entrants but there were some highly impressive individuals from each zone and conveners should be commended for their commitment to their trials and the teams that they entered. In the Junior Boys Category the eventual winner was Nathan Porley of Bossley Park HS who was triumphant over Lachlan Cosgrove from Elizabeth Macarthur HS. This was a highly entertaining match and I look forward to their development in the opens category in 2020 and beyond. The Semi Finals in the Open Boys pitted Paul Truong and Jesse Ingleton together, whilst the other side saw Tony Le and Erik Zak face off. Both matches were a Westfields v Macarthur, showcasing the strengths of these zones. Semi Final results saw Tony and Paul coming out on top for a Westfields Final. Both semi-finals were great matches and these 4 players made up the top half of our team for the CHS Carnival in 2019. In the Final, Paul was the eventual winner taking home the SSW Shield as the top player in SSW for 2019. Congratulations to Paul and all who attended and I look forward to seeing you again in 2020.

The 2019 NSWCHS Teams Event was held in Wollongong comprising the best Tennis Players in the state across singles and double matches. This year was very much an establishment year with a young inexperienced side with only 2 student having played at the carnival before. Unfortunately not sending a team in 2018 SSW was seeded in 10th Position and had to play the best 2 Teams in Syd North and Nth Coast in our first 2 pool matches. Some nervous tennis saw us go down in both matches essentially ending our medal hopes. The boys regathered on Day 2 with some strong matches to finish the pool in 3rd position with a 12-0 Drubbing of Sydney West and a comprehensive 11-1 result against South Coast highlighting our return to form. In the 5th place play off we defeated Sydney East 10-2 highlighting our growing results and potential. Having not played Hunter or Western due to the luck of the draw I feel our boys could hold themselves high in fact they widely were regarded as unlucky to not be playing off for 3rd. Highlights included the Doubles Pair of Paul and Jesse combining beautifully to remain undefeated throughout the tournament and both make the Merit Selection Team, the growing relationships of the boys and the constant improvement shown throughout the tournament. Hopefully we can keep the majority of this team together and build on our results in 2020. CHS State Selections: Paul Truong - Westfields SHS, Jesse Ingleton - Camden HS.

The quality of touch football continues to grow from year to year which is the result of dedicated personnel in some of the zones who continue to be advocates for touch football. While away in Maitland, the team played consistent touch to remain competitive against most opponents. The boys were able to follow game plans and structures and demonstrated resilience in testing times. The hosts, CIS, delivered a successful championship with class officials allowing for high quality matches. A notable mention to Luke Tiberti who represented SSW for the third year in a row and gained selection in the NSWPSSA team. State Selections: Luke Tiberti – Padstow Heights PS

Our tournament started well with a 6-0 win over Northwest. We then were on the wrong side of some close scores with a 4-3 loss to CIS, a 3-3 draw with Western and a last second 3-2 loss to Riverina. The team was able to rally from here to produce a dominant 3-0 victory over Sydney East. The second day started well for SSW as we knocked over top 4 hopefuls South Coast with a huge 5-0 win. A 4-2 victory over MacKillop helped us build some momentum, we then ran into some strong competition, playing the 2 tournament favourites, Polding and Sydney North, back to back. Our final game on day 3 was going well, up 1-0 at halftime over Sydney West. However, we ran out of legs and eventually went down 3-1. It was a joy to coach such a group of fine young sportswomen. We would like to thank the entire team and their families for their commitment and enthusiasm towards both training and the carnival.

The 2019 NSW Combined High Schools Boys’ Touch Football carnival was held at Apex Oval in Dubbo. The Championships were played in excellent conditions over the three days inside the Stadium, which allowed for fast and expansive contests in all 8 games played. The Sydney South West team played tough, consistent Touch Football however were not able to convert close games into victories. The SSW team finished with 1 win, and 7 very close losses which were against quality opposition. All team members are to be congratulated on their excellent sportsmanship and efforts over a demanding 3 days of Touch Football. 1st Sydney North 2nd Hunter 3rd North Coast 4th Sydney West 5th Western 6th Sydney East 7th North West 8th South Coast 9th Riverina 10th Sydney South West The Sydney South West team played a fast paced, direct style of touch football which saw us challenge many teams for a certain period of time. Unfortunately, we were unable to convert a few close games to a victory (Def by South Coast 2-4) and (Def by Riverina 3-4) as these results do not accurately reflect the efforts of the players. I was most impressed by our performances against Sydney North and Hunter (who were the eventual finalists) as we were able to keep them scoreless throughout the first half of each match.

Having coached some of these players in the past, I had the pleasure of coaching some of these girls once again and meeting new faces in the team. I was impressed by the players’ willingness to adopt feedback and coaching instruction alongside undertake the challenges presented to them during the tournament. The girls are to be congratulated on their sportsmanship and how they improved immensely each game. There are also a few players worth mentioning in this report.

Emaison Beck received the MVP Award and took the captaincy in her stride as she led by example with her positive attitude, calm composure and willingness to continually drive and defend even when faced with difficult situations throughout the tournament. She was able to provide constructive feedback to players and made some valuable contributions to our team strategies over the 3 days. Imogen Lowe, being the youngest player in the team received the Coaches Award as she showed tremendous growth as a player and I look forward to seeing her progress in the coming years. I would also like to extend my appreciation and thanks to all the parents and families for their support throughout the week.

After not attending the Championships in 2018 a very young team came together after the KO/Trials day and made a commitment to start training in Term 3. This happened with 3 training runs in September and on through October. The boys trained enthusiastically and learnt a great deal. Our first game of the Championships was against South Coast – our old foes. We led into the last quarter but inexperience beat us and we lost 5-4. After this the boys were more determined and learnt more and more each game. We did not win any games during the rounds but we learnt and practised a lot. In the playoffs we were again to play South Coast and the boys took control early and went on to win 6 – 4, giving us 7th place. To the parents and boys a great thankyou and well done. We all look forward to 2020.

What an exciting week, from playing 9 games, performing game duties, to Dress Up day, a pool inflatable relay race (which we won), to collecting bottles for the farmers. As the least experienced team at the championships the girls showed great resilience and determination to always achieve and work together. The girls played hard and improved in skill and tactics with every game earning the respect of the other regional teams. During the finals we were able to pull ahead by 2 goals for most of the game but ended up with a draw. However, experience told in a penalty shoot out going down by 2 goals to South Coast. Thank you to our parents and supporters who cheered enthusiastically during every game and for making it possible for the girls to attend the carnival. Without this support Water Polo would not flourish and provide opportunities for many students that is not available in our region outside of school.
