Their respective efforts are highlighted in this the 29th Annual Year Book of the Sydney South West School Sport Association, the first to be in electronic form. In addition to recognising successful students, this Year Book also acknowledges the many teachers who have worked tirelessly as coaches, sports organisers, zone executive and conveners. Their selfless commitment to school sport at all levels has enabled so much to be achieved. This year has seen some tremendous achievements by the Association both on and off the playing field. These include: 5 SSW Teams winning respective championships across PSSA and CHS 14 Primary Students selected in NSWPSSA Teams 71 Students selected in NSWCHS Teams or higher 91 Teachers directly involved in the Association as Members of the Executive, Conveners, Coaches or Managers. Numerous others involved as Officials at Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics Championships. An increase in the number of primary schools releasing teachers to officiate at SSW events allowing for better quality in the programs as well as an increasing understanding that for the students to be provided for, personnel need to be released to run the programs. Greater opportunities for teachers to be educated in, and feel more comfortable to play a greater part in School Sport in general. Continuation of the Schools Encouragement program – Recognition of SSW Schools who show strong support for High Potential and Gifted Sporting Programs at Association level. Continued partnerships with the Directors of the varying Principal Networks in SSW and the Association. The affiliation of Bankstown South Infants School to the East Hills Zone PSSA to allow those infants students who are eligible to have access to the representative sporting pathway in Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics. The investigation of accessing the ‘Participation Space’ for the students and schools of the Association. More importantly, the provision of opportunity for 85,000 students within south western Sydney. SCHOOL SPORT is for all students, not only the elite, as everyone benefits from improving their fitness, refining their skills and learning to be a team member. Through recognition of success and acknowledgement of achievement, all students are encouraged to continue their participation in sport. I would like to acknowledge the outstanding leadership and commitment of Anthony Murphy and his team again this year and congratulate them on the successful move of the Sydney South West School Sports Association to the new office at Turrella. Finally, I would like to congratulate the executive of the Association on their efforts in producing this Year Book. Publication of a Year Book has been a tradition of the Association and catalogues the outstanding history of the Association. WARREN FINN Director, Educational Leadership Chipping Norton Principals Network Metropolitan South Operational Directorate Public Schools NSW In 2019 Sydney South West hosted one State event - the NSWPSSA Girls’ Cricket Championships at Raby. Thank you to Jason Ellsmore, Matthew Innes and Chris Whitten for convening the competition and showcasing SSW at this event, as well as to Anthony Murphy and Lianne Essex for their expert administration and management of officials, students, support staff and parents. Congratulations also to the following SSW teams and their coaches/managers, who excelled at their State Championships during the year: Girls’ Basketball – 1st place 11s Rugby League – Runners Up (2nd place) and Girls’ Hockey who finished 3rd It is pleasing to note that many of our current conveners, coaches and managers have been re- elected to their positions in 2020, although some have chosen not to seek re-appointment. Of these particular appreciation is extended to :- David Ottman – Opens Rugby League Convener. David has held this position for 6 years, managing and organising the teams, officiating at carnivals and mentoring coaches admirably. David also holds the position of President of the Horsley Zone and we wish him luck in continuing this role in the future and extend our thanks to him for his service to SSW sport. Ross Morrison – Leader, NSW School Sport – Ross has officially retired from the Department of Education and on behalf of SSW, I would like to say a fond farewell to him, as he was a previous RSO of our Association. Not only was Ross a colleague and mentor to many of our teachers in sport, he is someone who has been a friend to all of us here at the SSW Association. A new initiative to highlight this year was the convening of a SSW PSSA Sport Forum. Our Association invited Zone Presidents, Principals and Executive members from the primary schools across SSW to join together and showcase the roles of each level in sport, highlight what is working well and discuss the challenges faced in the administration and support of sporting programs today. The feedback from the forum was overwhelmingly positive and we are looking forward to convening more of these events in 2020. In Term 3, current and previous SSW Presidents, Vice Presidents, Conveners, Managers and Coaches of sport, along with their Zone counterparts, had the opportunity to come together and celebrate the 50th anniversary of SSW Association. This event was held at the Liverpool Catholic Club and was a fantastic opportunity for teachers both past and present to meet up again, reminisce and marvel at just how quickly time goes by. We viewed an historical montage of photos, shared some laughs and took the time to thank one and all for their important contributions to the history of Sydney South West Sport. Thank you very much to Anthony Murphy, Lianne Essex and Ross Higgins, who spent many hours organising this celebration and who sorted through our archives to put this wonderful event together. The slide show they produced is a wonderful artifact to pass on to future officials and who knows, some of us might even be around to share some stories of today at the next big milestone SSW event! Congratulations to these students and teachers for your achievements this year. Assistance at Sydney South West trials and major carnivals was also provided by schools who supplied student officials. Our appreciation and thanks is extended to the students, Principals and organising teachers at Westfields SHS, Bass HS, Elderslie HS, Camden HS, Bossley Park HS, Bradbury PS and Rosemeadow PS. Finally, my appreciation and gratitude goes to all delegates, conveners, managers and coaches who attend our Council meetings and implement our sporting programs. It is your efforts, dedication and commitment to excellence, along with the many out-of-school hours of work that enables representational pathways to occur in all 3 levels of sport. Sincere thanks to the SSW PSSA Executive who share in the running of SSW PSSA – Dean Kellaway, Matt Ryan, Chris Whitten, Jason Ellsmore, Stephen Gray and Brent Kunkler. Your commitment to policy, access and equity in sport, along with your many dedicated efforts and time in organising sport is to be commended. I appreciate your collective knowledge and good humour, both of which assist me greatly in overseeing the running of the Association. To Anthony Murphy, the SSW SCO and Lianne Essex, the SSW SCSO, I offer my thanks, gratitude and sincere appreciation for the outstanding work you do on behalf of our students and teachers. Through very trying circumstances this year, you have both always ensured that the Association and its schools are fully supported with your high level of skill and expertise in administration and organisation. Thanks also to Matt Mee for stepping into Lianne’s role when needed. We are lucky to have you at SSW! PSSA is a recognised Gifted and Talented program within the public school education system that continues only with the support of school teachers, their Principals and Executive Teams.
