Describing his work, Ichikawa says, "I try to visualize everything...I'm the kind of person who has to see something — even in my own imagination «•- before I understand it. I started as a painter and I think like one. That is wl:^ the camera is so important to me« I plan all the set-ups and I always check the framing, and I usually try to work with (a cameraman) I know.•••I design the sets too, usually... and I'd probably do the music too if I could."     YUKIONNA: AS RECONSTRUÇÕES MODERNAS DE UM MITO Clície Santos de Araujo Maria Luísa Vanik Pinto Andrei dos Santos Cunha RESUMO Neste trabalho, pretendemos fazer uma análise comparativa entre o conto de fadas japonês Yukionna (“A Mulher das Neves”) na versão de Lafcadio Hearn e suas adaptações modernas para o cinema em Kwaidan: as quatro faces do medo (1964), de Masaki Kobayashi, e em Sonhos (1990), de Akira Kurosawa. Com isso, esperamos visualizar as nuances interpretativas que os diretores têm do conto clássico e de que maneira tais visões são representadas nos filmes. Como referencial teórico central, utilizaremos os instrumentos de análise propostos na obra de João Batista de Brito (2006). Inicialmente, podemos concluir que o filme de 1964 possui mais semelhanças com o conto de Hearn, enquanto o filme de 1990 mostra uma interpretação mais livre. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: LITERATURA COMPARADA, CINEMA, LITERATURA JAPONESA. ABSTRACT In this work, we intend to make a comparative analysis between the Japanese fairytale Yukionna (“The Woman of the Snow”), by Lafcadio Hearn and two modern film adaptations, Masaki Kobayashi’s Kaidan (1964), and Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams (1990). With that, we would like to investigate how each director envisions the classical tale, and how these interpretations are portrayed on their movies. As theoretical reference we used the instruments of analysis proposed by João Batista de Brito (2006). As a preliminary observation, we can conclude that the 1964 movie has more similarities with Hearn’s tale, while the 1990 movie shows a somewhat more free interpretation of the story.     L’ÉCRAN JAPONAIS 60 ANS DE DÉCOUVERTES DE MÉLIÈS À LA 3D DE EXPOSITION DU MUSÉE DU CINÉMA FILMS À PARTIR DU 14 SEPTEMBRE PROGRAMMATION Bonne figure Herbes flottantes 17 L’ÉCRAN JAPONAIS 60 ANS DE DÉCOUVERTES La galerie des donateurs du Musée du Cinéma expose les plus belles pièces japonaises de sa collection, sublimes kimonos de La Porte de l’Enfer et de Kagemusha, peintures originales à l’encre et aqua- relle d’Hiroshi Mizutani (dernier chef décorateur de Kenji Mizoguchi), affiches et photos de grands films classiques ou de cinéma bis, objets insolites : 170 documents triés sur le volet, révélateurs des nombreux dons particulièrement généreux des cinéastes japonais, à découvrir jusqu’en juin 2017. La Cinémathèque française a toujours développé des relations privilégiées avec le cinéma japonais. Elle lui porte une admiration et une curiosité, soulignées par des hommages réguliers aux grands maitres, aux jeunes cinéastes ou aux sociétés de productions nippones. Le parcours de cette exposition retrace les rendez-vous marquants entre nos deux pays, à la Cinémathèque, à partir des années 60 au Palais de Chaillot, jusqu’aux hom- mages récents à Shinji Somai, Naomi Kawase et Kiyoshi Kurosawa, à Bercy… Trois grandes dates ont marqué la programmation : en 1963, la première rétrospective, intitulée « Chefs-d’œuvre du cinéma japonais » permet de découvrir plus de 140 films d’auteurs aujourd’hui incontournables, Akira Kurosawa, Kenji Mizoguchi, Mikio Naruse et Yasujiro Ozu… En 1971, une nouvelle manifestation intitulée « 75eme anniversaire du cinéma japonais », révèle une nouvelle génération de cinéastes comme Nagisa Ôshima, Hiroshi Teshigahara et Kijû Yoshida.

    PRODUCTION NOTES The first draft of RAN was written in February-March of 1976, one of several Kurosawa wrote in the wake of the success of Dersu Uzala. In this he worked with long-time collaborators Hideo Oguni (1904-1996, twelve scripts, beginning with Ikiru in 1952) and Masato Ide (b 1922. three scripts, beginning with Red Beard in 1965), and in the beginning it was based on the story of 16th century warlord Motonari Mori and his three extremely faithful sons – Kurosawa wondered what if they were not faithful. It was only until well into the scripting process that he realized the similarity to King Lear. But in those times, only sons could be heirs, unlike Lear’s daughters. Kurosawa also gave his protagonist a back history of bloody conquest, which the director found lacking in Shakespeare’s original, and added the pivotal figure of Lady Kaede. After the opening of Kagemusha in 1980 – which was considered to be less expensive to make, and more “bankable” than RAN – Kurosawa noted that now he had the actors, horses, armor, and crew to realize his dream: he just needed the money. But even at this stage of his career, he had great difficulty in finding financing. His long-time home base Toho refused to produce (although they would distribute), reasoning that the expected $10 million budget would be prohibitive when one of their normal features cost only 1 to 2 million. (Although the following year, they’d spend over 10 million on their Godzilla remake.) Althogh France’s Gaumont would eventually pull out of the project, its head Daniel Toscan du Plantier approached veteran producer (of, among many others, five films with Luis Buñuel) Serge Silberman at the Deauville Film Festival in 1982.

    Masaki Kobayashi Reencuentro con un maestro del cine japonés Diez films en la Sala Leopoldo Lugones El Complejo Teatral de Buenos Aires y la Fundación Cinemateca Argentina, en colaboración con el Centro Cultural e Informativo de la Embajada de Japón, han organizado un ciclo denominado Masaki Kobayashi, reencuentro con un maestro del cine japonés, que se llevará a cabo del jueves 19 de octubre al jueves 2 de noviembre en la Sala Leopoldo Lugones del Teatro San Martín (Avda. Corrientes 1530). La muestra estará integrada por diez films –muchos de ellos inéditos en Argentina-- en copias 35mm enviadas especialmente desde Tokio por The Japan Foundation. Esta retrospectiva recorre una parte sustancial de la obra de Kobayashi (1916- 1996), uno de los realizadores nipones más importantes en la historia del cine de posguerra, incluyendo algunos de sus primeros títulos, nunca antes exhibidos en nuestro país. “De todos los realizadores pertenecientes a la generación que ingresó en la industria durante o poco tiempo después de la Guerra del Pacífico, Kobayashi se transformaría, tal vez, en el crítico social más autoconsciente”. (Alexander Jacoby). “Nacido en 1916 en la isla de Hokkaido, Kobayashi terminó sus estudios universitarios con una especialización en Literatura, pero decidió entregarse por completo al cine, ingresando como empleado raso en los estudios Shochiku, uno de los cinco más importantes de Japón. Permanecería poco tiempo en ese puesto: a comienzos de 1942 fue llamado para formar parte de las filas del ejército nipón. Esencialmente un soldado antimilitarista, como alguna vez se definió a sí mismo, los siguientes tres años (y un cuarto como prisionero de guerra en Manchuria) lo marcarían para siempre, y parte de esa experiencia sería exorcizada años más tarde en su extensa trilogía La condición humana (1959-1961), basada en la novela de Junpei Gomikawa (y exhibida en la Sala Lugones en el año 2000).

    PRESS RELEASE: May 2012 12/26 Two Masters of Japanese Cinema: Kaneto Shindo & Kozaburo Yoshimura at BFI Southbank in June and July 2012 April 2012 marks the 100th birthday of Kaneto Shindo, one of the leading talents in post-war Japanese film. Throughout June and July BFI Southbank will host a two-part retrospective which pays tribute both to Shindo himself and to his friend, colleague and contemporary Kozaburo Yoshimura (1911- 2000), one of the neglected masters of classical Japanese film. June’s programme focuses primarily on the 1950s, the period when their collaboration was closest. Yoshimura and Shindo’s work together constitute a revealing social history and include some of Japanese cinema’s most powerful and moving films. Beginning with a Season Introduction on Wed 6 June by the season’s curator Alexander Jacoby (Lecturer in Japanese Studies at Oxford Brookes University), Jacoby will explore the collaboration between Shindo and Yoshimura situating their work in the social, political and cinematic context of a rapidly changing post-war Japan. Shindo is a versatile director, skilled screenwriter and pioneer of independent production who has astonishingly remained active into very recent years, releasing his latest film, Postcard, at the age of 98. Under contract to Shochiku studios as respectively director and screenwriter, Yoshimura and Shindo initiated a fruitful collaboration with The Ball at the Anjo House (1947), a Chekhovian study of the decline of the pre-war aristocracy, which scooped the top prize in the critics’ poll conducted that year by the leading Japanese film magazine, Kinema Junpo. But both men found their creativity inhibited at Shochiku, and by the early 1950s had established their own independent production company, Kindai Eiga Kyokai.
