Bringing together military members, business leaders and community partners, these events will provide insight and generate inspiring discussion surrounding the unique experiences women face in the Canadian Armed Forces. The three events will build on the success of the inaugural 2018 reception in Toronto, featuring a panel of speakers from the military community discussing how their military careers have shaped and defined them into the leaders they are today. The events will take place on October 23 in Vancouver, October 24 in Calgary, and October 30 in Toronto with the goal of raising upwards of $100,000 collectively for the Captain Nichola Goddard Fund. Looking back at the 1st Annual Captain Nichola Goddard Cocktail Reception In 2018, True Patriot Love hosted the inaugural Captain Nichola Goddard Reception, presented by Bennett Jones. Guests gathered to pay tribute to women in the military and heard from a panel of successful women in the Canadian Armed Forces as they shared their stories of courage and leadership. The sold-out event included over 180 attendees and raised over $56,000 for the True Patriot Love Captain Nichola Goddard Fund. SOLD OUT EVENT OVER $56,000 RAISED 17 CORPORATE PARTNERS OVER 180 GUESTS IN 2018 FOR THE GODDARD FUND SPONSORED THE FIRST EVENT 2 2 3 3 2nd ANNUAL CAPTAIN NICHOLA GODDARD RECEPTION SERIES: SPONSORSHIP PACKAGE THE CAPTAIN NICHOLA GODDARD FUND Women are vastly underrepresented in the military and account for only 15% of the Canadian Armed Forces. Female members of the Canadian military face unique challenges related to their service such as a higher risk of military-related sexual assault than their male counterparts, and a higher likelihood of mental injuries such as post traumatic stress for women who report military-related sexual assault. In addition, 40% of the military personnel released each year will experience a psychological injury requiring support and treatment, and Veteran women have an 81% higher risk of suicide than the general female population. True Patriot Love is committed to supporting women in the military and their families. Through the Captain Nichola Goddard Fund, True Patriot Love provides national funding to directly benefit community programs that support servicewomen, Veteran women and their families. The Fund was established in memory of Captain Nichola Goddard, the first female Canadian soldier to die in a combat role, and as of 2018, the Fund is being managed by True Patriot Love Foundation. To date $260,000 has been committed from the Captain Nichola Goddard Fund. The fund has supported initiatives such as: Royal Canadian Legion Veterans Emergency Transition (Branch 110) Services (VETS) Canada Funding supported the “Supporting Veterans Wives Group” Funding was directed towards the VETS Canada/ which is a new initiative that will enable the development Captain Nichola Goddard Support Initiative for Veteran and facilitation of a monthly peer support group for spouses women in crisis. of aging Veterans. 4 4 5 5 2nd ANNUAL CAPTAIN NICHOLA GODDARD RECEPTION SERIES: SPONSORSHIP PACKAGE 2nd ANNUAL CAPTAIN NICHOLA GODDARD RECEPTION SERIES: SPONSORSHIP PACKAGE Fellow Canadian, Nichola always believed she could help. It’s what motivated her to join the military when a recruiter first visited her high school in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. When we were growing up, Nichola’s unrelenting tenacity always inspired me. As I got older, I realized that her drive wasn’t a given. I realized that women across Canada, and around the world, regularly face discrimination and bias on the road to achieving their dreams. But Nichola always kept her drive, and it helped her lead her soldiers in Afghanistan. We started the Captain Goddard Fund to celebrate and serve strong women like Nichola who have the courage to never take no for an answer. They are the servicewomen,Veteran women, and their families, who protect the values integral to Canada and stand on guard for those less fortunate around the world. Since the fund was created, we’ve seen incredible support from Canadians. With True Patriot Love carrying on the legacy through the Captain Nichola Goddard Fund, $260,000 has been committed to programs supporting women from the military community and their families. And with your help, we will continue to support organizations that stand for women like Nichola, helping to manage the realities of a career in the military. Canada needs strong women, and the women that served before, with, and after Nichola are the strongest I’ve ever met. Nichola would have been incredibly proud of the programs we’ve been able to create in her legacy. And for that, my family and I are forever thankful. • Along the Highway: Landscapes of National Mourning in Canada
Along the Highway: Landscapes of National Mourning in Canada by Jordan Claire Hale A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Geography Department of Geography and Program in Planning University of Toronto © Copyright by Jordan Claire Hale 2014 ii Along the Highway: Landscapes of National Mourning in Canada Jordan Claire Hale Master of Arts in Geography Department of Geography and Program in Planning University of Toronto 2014 Abstract Between 2002 and 2011, 158 Canadian Forces soldiers died while serving in Afghanistan and were repatriated via Canadian Forces Base Trenton to the Office of the Chief Coroner of Ontario in Toronto for autopsy. The repatriation route took their bodies along Highway 401 in central Ontario, where thousands assembled on bridges above the highway to pay their respects. In this thesis, I detail the memorial landscape that developed around what came to be known as the Highway of Heroes, and I use this conception of the highway as a landscape to demonstrate the ways in which it participates in the ongoing remilitarization of Canada. Following the work of Judith Butler, I argue that the Highway of Heroes contributes to the production of a hierarchy of grievable subjects, and the act of memorializing soldiers is implicated in the erasure of other victims of state violence, including missing and murdered Indigenous women. iii Acknowledgments I am immensely grateful to have had the support of so many wonderful individuals throughout the research process. First and foremost, I thank my partner Greg J. Smith, whose patience, sense of humour, editing prowess, and driver’s license were invaluable to this project.

Abstract Over the past two decades, expressions of Canadian national identity in cultural production have become increasingly militarized. This is particularly noticeable since the late 1990s in the commemorative works that have been created, renovated, or re-inscribed in Canada or in important Canadian international sites such as the Vimy Memorial in France. An integral component to this militarization is the paradoxical figure of the Unknown Soldier, both a man and a symbol, known and unknown, individualized and universal. Despite its origins in Europe after the First World War, the Unknown Soldier Memorial tradition has been reinvigorated in a Canadian context in the twenty-first century resulting in an elevation of white masculine heroism while curtailing criticism of military praxis.
