THE SERVICE OF THE WORD (p. 38 in the red hymnal)

- WE GATHER TO WORSHIP -

HYMN: CW #562: “I Love to Tell the Story”

M: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you.

C: And also with you.

M: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy.

C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.

M: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guilt forever. You are his own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to his will.

C: Amen.

- WE PRAISE THE LORD -

M: In the peace of God’s forgiveness, let us praise the Lord:

C: ♫ (the music is on p. 39 of the hymnal) Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good. Blessed are they who take refuge in him. Your Word, O Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens. Your faithfulness continues forever. Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good. Blessed are they who take refuge in him.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

(ALL) O Lord our God, be gracious to us and surround us with your compassion day and night. Fill our hearts with faith and love that we may serve you and our fellowmen. We pray to you, for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. ♫ Amen.

-- WE LISTEN TO THE WORD –

FIRST LESSON: Exodus 32:7-14
7Then theLordsaid to Moses, “Go down, because your people, whom you brought up out of Egypt, have become corrupt.8They have been quick to turn awayfrom what I commanded them and have made themselves an idolcast in the shape of a calf. They have bowed down to it and sacrificedto it and have said, ‘These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.’

9“I have seen these people,” theLordsaid to Moses, “and they are a stiff-neckedpeople.10Now leave me aloneso that my anger may burn against them and that I may destroythem. Then I will make you into a great nation.”

11But Moses sought the favorof theLordhis God. “Lord,” he said, “why should your anger burn against your people, whom you brought out of Egypt with great power and a mighty hand?12Why should the Egyptians say, ‘It was with evil intent that he brought them out, to kill them in the mountains and to wipe them off the face of the earth’?Turn from your fierce anger; relent and do not bring disasteron your people.13Rememberyour servants Abraham, Isaac and Israel, to whom you swore by your own self:‘I will make your descendants as numerous as the starsin the sky and I will give your descendants all this landI promised them, and it will be their inheritance forever.’”14Then theLord relentedand did not bring on his people the disaster he had threatened.

PSALM OF THE DAY: Psalm 51a, page 86 in the hymnal

SECOND LESSON: I Timothy 1:12-17
12I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me trustworthy, appointing me to his service.13Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutorand a violent man, I was shown mercybecause I acted in ignorance and unbelief.14The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

15Here is a trustworthy sayingthat deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst.16But for that very reason I was shown mercyso that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patienceas an example for those who would believein him and receive eternal life.17Now to the Kingeternal, immortal, invisible, the only God,be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY: CW #505 vs. 5: “Love is the Gracious Gift”

You loved me first, Lord, sending me Jesus. Washed by your Spir’it, my heart came alive Now you invite me to love my neighbor, Showing your true love to ev’ryone.

GOSPEL: Luke 15:1-10

Now the tax collectorsand sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus.2But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”

3Then Jesus told them this parable:4“Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?5And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders6and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’7I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.

8“Or suppose a woman has ten silver coinsand loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it?9And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’10In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

THE APOSTLES’ CREED:

I believe in God the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended into hell.

The third day he rose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.

From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy Christian church, the communion of saints;

the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen.
