TA with responsibility for named pupil

Job Title: Teaching Assistant

Job Purpose:

To assist in promoting the learning and personal development of a named pupil to whom you are assigned, to enable them to make the best use of the educational opportunities available to them.

Objectives:

To support the child to access the school curriculum.

To support and develop the implementation of the pupils Personalised Plan.

To work with external agencies and the class teacher in supporting the emotional, social and educational development of the pupil.

Main responsibilities:

To aid the pupil to learn as effectively as possible both on a one to one basis and in a group situation, clarifying and explaining instructions.

Motivating and encouraging the pupil as required.

Supporting the pupil in accessing learning activities as directed by the teacher and differentiated curriculum.

Using the school system for recording the pupil’s progress.

Under the direction of the class teacher, carrying out and reporting on systematic observations of the pupil to gather evidence of their knowledge, understanding and skills, upon which the teacher makes judgements about their stage of development.

Assisting in weaker areas such as Speech, Language and Communication, Social Interaction, Reading, Spelling and Numeracy.

Liaising with the class teacher, SENCO and other professionals with regard to Individual Education Plans and the pupil’s progress in all areas.

Liaising with other professionals to develop specific programmes or strategies.

Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety, security and confidentiality, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person to ensure pupils wellbeing.

Have a firm, fair and positive approach to behaviour management and be flexible when supporting pupil behaviour.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

Develop a positive relationship with assigned pupil.

Be someone who enjoys working with young children.

Be imaginative, creative, energetic and interested in moving on children’s learning.

Have relevant qualifications e.g. NVQ3 in learning support/level 3 Teaching Assistant.

Have experience and associated training to support pupils with difficulties in Language and Communication/Behaviour.

Demonstrate sound knowledge of Primary practice.

Ideally have had experience of working with other professionals (i.e. Speech Therapists).

Be a good team player, flexible and prepared to use their initiative.

Be committed to their own professional development.
