Course Objective: This is a four-week intensive academic program that provides a glimpse of the diversities and complexities of Contemporary India, and its emerging role in the twenty-first century. It is designed to provide an overview of socio-cultural, political-economic realms and developmental issues through a multi-disciplinary prism. The course content includes a series of lectures by renowned faculty from within the University as well as other institutions in Hyderabad who are experts in their field and will engage you with new questions, perspectives and ideas. There will be readings provided to the students that they are expected to keep up with in order to participate in classroom discussions and debates. 6 Contemporary India, University of Hyderabad July 02 - July 29, 2017

The program deals with issues such as caste, religion, socio-cultural stratification in contemporary India, and is designed to historically contextualize these complex issues and realities. Topics include subjects and perspectives on Philosophy, Popular Culture, Media, Development, Literature, Art, Law, Environmental Policies, among others. The course includes lectures, interactive sessions, field trips, audio/video presentations, films and documentaries. Cultural programmes and sightseeing trips are also planned as part of the itinerary.

Students are encouraged to read the books titled Understanding Contemporary India edited by Sumit Ganguly (2003) and select chapters of the book (on economy, society and polity) in Routledge Handbook of Contemporary India edited by Knut A. Jacobsen (2015) before joining the course.

Course Structure: This course would have four components:

Lectures: Approximately 20 classes of two hours duration. A couple of additional lectures may be organized on demand on topics of interest of students. Interactive Discussion Sessions: Five sessions of two hours.

Field Visit and Study Tour: Two, day trips (A tour of the city highlighting its history and the other to a village or an NGO as part of assignment). Similarly, one or two trips based on class lectures may also be organized. Seminar Presentations by students: Three to four afternoon sessions in the third week.

Resources: Learning in this course will be based on a variety of resources.

Books (an indicative list is given at the end of the course outline) Available in the University library and SIP library. Book chapters and articles (will be made available to students in form of a reader). Web based resources (Online journals, important portals) accessible through University internet network. E-Group will be created and some relevant articles and documents, as suggested by Guest Speakers will be sent to participants; Videos/Documentaries will be screened during the interactive sessions.

Course Evaluation

Field Report: 15% (Students are required to submit a report on either of the field visits)

Book Review: 15% (Students are required to submit a 600-1000 words review of a book/novel on a relevant theme that has to be submitted by the end of the second week – a selective list of authors will be provided)

Term paper and Presentation: 40%

5% Research Proposal (On a topic pertaining to the contemporary India should be summited by the participant through Email in the first week of the course) 25% Written 10% Class presentation

(Students are required to submit a written paper of at least 2000 words on a topic of their choice that has to be submitted in the fourth week. Proposal of term papers (of about 150 words) have to be submitted by the end of first week (through email and will be discussed in the interactive session for finalisation in the second week. Terms papers have to follow stylistic requirements of writing an academic paper. Seminar presentations on the term papers will be scheduled on specified afternoons from the third week)

Minor Test: 20% (participants will be asked to write a short note on a topic related to course in not less than 1000 words in an examination of one hour duration (Not required for NCI students opting for 7.5 ECTS)

Class Participation: 10% (attendance in class is compulsory unless a student is unwell or has informed the teacher; students are encouraged to participate in discussions during class and this will have positive influence on their overall evaluation)
