Context

The Trust operates throughout the traditional county of Yorkshire (i.e. all of the Yorkshire and Humber region except North Lincolnshire) from the Humber to the Pennines and from the Dales and Moors to the urban conurbations of the south. It is the second oldest of the 47 Wildlife Trusts, which work in partnership to cover the whole of the UK. Our purpose is to lead the way in achieving our vision of a Yorkshire rich in wildlife for everyone. Activities that the Trust undertakes are nature reserve management of 95 reserves covering more than 2,500 hectares scattered across the region, specialist projects in river and wetland management, community development and environmental education activities, publicity and promotion and campaigning and policy work.

The Trust employs more than 120 staff (equivalent of 96 F/T staff) and, crucially, enjoys the support of 40,000 members. The staff work through four teams: support services; development; and two conservation delivery teams – north & east and south & west. Each team has a director who reports to the Chief Executive who is responsible for the operations of the Trust and, in turn, reports to the Board of Trustees who govern the organisation.

The conservation delivery teams are then divided into regional teams which are led by a Regional Manager who reports to the Director of the delivery team.

The Trust engages more than 900 dedicated volunteers and voluntary trainees in its work and all employees are expected to encourage, develop and support volunteer involvement wherever possible.

Increased membership and the income this generates is fundamental to the long-term development of Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. This post will contribute to sustained membership growth and fulfils the key strategic objective to grow our resources, raise our profile and increase our influence through a diversity of recruitment methods. Job Description

Outline Responsible to: Wildlife Supporter Manager Responsible for: Volunteers where appropriate

Brief

The Wildlife Supporter Officer works directly for Yorkshire Wildlife Trust to recruit long-term new members through face to face recruitment in pre-agreed areas in Yorkshire, preferably close to the recruiter’s home. The post-holder will engage with members of the public at a variety of pre-booked events and venues, promoting and securing new supporters for the Trust.

From time to time the post holder may be required to work at other locations at the Trust’s direction for which reasonable out of pocket expenses will be paid in accordance with Trust policy. Payment for membership recruitment will be made at a basic salary for agreed targets and a generous rate of commission for any further signings; two new memberships per day are required to cover the basic salary. Targets are set monthly based on contracted hours and performance (including recruitment less any cancellations) is subject to regular review.

Details

Terms and Conditions

Salary: £15,450 per annum (pro rata) for the first two signings per day plus commission (starting at 62% and rising to 72% once targets met consistently) on any additional signings over this target less any memberships where the Trust fails to take a first payment.

Commission will be paid monthly in arrears for signings in excess of agreed minimum targets. Targets are set monthly based on contracted hours and are subject to a monthly monitoring and review (tacking into account recruitment and any cancellations) process with the Supporter Development Manager.

Hours: Flexible hours 2 to 5 days, Monday to Sunday. The nature of the post’s duties requires weekend work and some evenings. Paid overtime is not available, but time off in lieu will be given.

Holidays: 25 working days per annum in addition to normal public holidays, pro rata for part time workers.

Pensions: You will be eligible to be enrolled into the Trust’s Group Flexible Retirement plan. The Trust will comply with its statutory obligations on auto-enrolment at the appropriate time and employee contributions will be increased in line with any statutory changes and deducted from your wages. Notice Period: Generally 4 weeks following satisfactory completion of a 6 month probationary period.

Place of Work: You will be allocated to the nearest YWT office to your home. This will be where you can do your administration and venue booking.

Travel: You will be expected to get yourself to the office or your recruitment venue yourself. Public transport is encouraged where practical. Pool vehicles are available should you be required to travel between Trust offices. 27.5p per mile will be payable for travel costs over and above your normal commute.
