#JuneChallenge: Why we’re doing it

Today’s Objective:
Tallies: What is your total?

Attending Danbury High School provides you with a unique high school experience. You are surrounded by a diverse student population and attend the largest high school in the state. Danbury, as a city, has an interesting demographic.

The racial makeup of the city is 68.2%White, 25.0%HispanicorLatino, 7.2%African American, 0.40%Native American, 6.8%Asian, less than 0.10%Pacific Islander, 7.6% fromother races, and 4.5% from two or more races. 32% of the population was foreign born. Danbury High School is currently classified by the State of Connecticut Department of Education as a 'review school. Review Schools are Connecticut's lowest performing, irrespective of Title I status. All schools with CMT/ CAPT 2012 participation rates less than 95 percent, four-year cohort graduation rates below 60 percent (for the graduating class of 2011), three-year baseline School Performance Indexes (SPIs) below 64 or identification as Focus Schools were classified as Review School.

Some of this, in the passage above, might be information you were already aware of. However, to some of you, it might be new. As you work throughout the year in my class to set goals for your future, keep the information above in mind.

In life, the city you grow up in and the high school that you graduate from dictates a lot in your life: where you go to college, the friends you have, the opportunities you’ve been afforded in life, etc. You currently sit at the “DHS table” in life. As you move on and begin your next chapter after high school, there are going to be many other “tables” you might want to sit at – you might want to go to MIT, Naugatuck Community College, get a job - these are all “other tables.” Other students who live in more affluent towns/cities are at an advantage. They have more tools in their toolbox, which will help them navigate their next chapter whether that is college, trade school, or getting a job. They may come from a richer family, they may know successful people that they can network with, their parents may have gone to Ivy League schools, etc. If you want to be able to “sit at other tables” in life, you have to be prepared to compete with and be on the same level with your peers throughout the state and throughout the country. They already have an economic advantage in some cases, they’ve attended “better” schools, and they have the ability to network. In order to be on the same level, you need tools and resources to help you “move” to different “tables” when you want to.

Group Members: ______

Questions: Discuss the following questions as a group and write responses in the space provided.

1) Were you aware of this data on Danbury and Danbury High School? How do you “fit” into this demographic?

2) How does it feel to reflect upon your own privilege and/or disadvantages? Share and discuss with group.

2) What are the advantages of attending and graduating from DHS?

3) This year we will be working on skills and resources that you will need post-high school. What tools and skills do you want in your “toolbox” to help you succeed?

4) Explain Mrs. Fischer’s “table” extended metaphor. How does it connect to real life? What does your current table look like? What table do you hope to sit at one day?

JUNE CHALLENGE PREPRATION

Purpose: Often times in school you ask yourself the question: “How is this going to help me in the real world?” Well, for the rest of the year we are going to explore this question. Throughout the year you are going to be assigned new tasks. These tasks will help you build a magnificent portfolio that will help you for years to come. We want you to be the next doctor, construction worker, nurse, mechanic, etc. Whatever you want to be when you are ready, we want you prepared. We want you to be able to talk to any person and be able to express yourself on paper and in person. The skills that you will learn throughout this semester will help you and guide you for the rest of your life. We see how capable you are and talented each of you is. It is important to be able to show that to the rest of the world.
