The appointment is subject to the current conditions of employment of teachers contained in the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document, the Education Act 1997, the required standards for Qualified Teacher Status and other current educational legislation.

This job description maybe amended at any time following discussion between the Headteacher or Team Leader and the member of staff, and will be reviewed annually.

The post-holder will be required to undertake the following:-

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES:

With the support of, and under the direction of, the Assistant Headteacher (Pupil Well Being), Lead Teaching Assistant and Senior Leadership Team:

1.  To develop a knowledge of a range of learning support needs and to develop an understanding of the specific needs of the pupil to be supported including emotional and behavioural needs.

2.  Taking into account the learning support involved, to aid the pupil to learn as effectively as possible both in group situations and on his/her own by, for example:

Clarifying and explaining instructions

Ensuring the pupil is able to use the equipment and materials provided

Helping pupils to concentrate on and finish work set

Liaising with Class Teacher, Lead Teaching Assistant and Assistant Headteacher about individual education plans (IEPs)

Developing appropriate resources to support the pupil

3.  To establish a supportive relationship with the pupil concerned.

4.  In conjunction with other staff supervise the activities of pupils during school hours.

5.  Accompany pupils on off–site visits as part of their leisure activities.

6.  Work with others in maintaining effective working relationships.

7.  Ensure effective communication with colleagues on issues relating to the welfare of pupils.

8.  Act as a Key Worker, if necessary, for specific pupils providing a reference point for parents and to be the ‘Link’ adult for the pupils.

9.  To encourage acceptance and inclusion of pupils.

10.  To develop methods of promoting/reinforcing the pupil’s self-esteem.

11.  To assist, with the Teacher (and other professionals as appropriate), in the development of a suitable programme of support (IEPs) for pupil who need learning support.

12.  In conjunction with the class teacher and/or other professionals to develop a system of recording the pupil’s progress.

13.  To contribute to the maintenance of learners progress records.

14.  To participate in the evaluation of the support programme.

15.  To provide regular feedback about the pupil to the teacher.

16.  Where appropriate to develop a relationship to foster links between home and school.

17.  To liaise, advise and consult with other members of the team supporting the pupil when asked to do so.

18.  To contribute to reviews of pupil’s progress, as appropriate.

19.  To attend relevant in-service training.

20.  To be aware of school procedures.

21.  To be aware of confidential issues linked to home/pupil/teacher/school work and to keep confidences appropriately.

22.  To develop awareness of the requirements of the national curriculum.

23.  To support specific aims in lessons as planned and directed by the teacher.

24.  To develop awareness of the aims of the literacy and numeracy strategies relevant to the classes supported.

25.  To develop awareness of curriculum targets and support work towards them.

26.  Support and implement the philosophy of Care practice within the school in line with the School policy and practice.

27.  In conjunction with other staff supervise the activities of pupils during school hours.

28.  Support discipline and supervision standards of pupils appropriate to their age, emotional and intellectual development which reflects the LA and school policies and guidance.

29.  Participate in case work relating to pupils, liaising with home as necessary and from guidance and discussion with the Assistant Headteacher (Pupil Well Being).

30.  Ensure effective communication with colleagues on issues relating to the welfare of pupils.

31.  To be fully aware of all Child Protection Policies and the issues regarding Safeguarding pupils.

The Headteacher may vary the duties from time to time without changing their general character or the level of responsibility entailed.
