Attachments: Foaming Techniques.doc; 100_0568.JPG; 100_0572.JPG Visit our Website at: www.hanford.gov/rl?page=974&parent=973. This report covers two weeks, the week of March 13th and the 20th, 2006.

1. Met with SWSD Radcon Manager and members of his staff concerning ALARA Protective Measures that could be used to excavate B/C Cribs. Current plans call for delaying removal of the contaminated dirt located 10-18' below the surface because the dose rates at the surface are very low. Dose estimate to remove the contaminated dirt and ship it to the ERDF Trench is 76 person-rem. EPA has asked that we reevaluate the dose estimate and evaluate additional ALARA protective Measures. Discussed using a remotely operated excavator but the feeling is that it would significantly increase the time to accomplish the job and not be ALARA. Shielding could be added to the shuttle truck cab and the excavator bucket. Radiation readings on the full bucket could be obtained by using remotely reading survey equipment and a mister could be installed on the excavator to eliminate the need for a laborer spraying water. None of these suggestions would result in a significant reduction in dose.

2. Received message from SNF ALARA Chairperson looking for a source of pads that could be used for decontamination. Recommended they purchase female absorbent pads, sew lint-free cloths together with absorbent inside or search the internet for "absorbent pads".

3. CH2M Radcon H.P. called wanting info on expandable foam. Tank Farm workers are in mockup training trying to improve methods of removing highly radioactive jumpers from valve transfer pits. Visited the mockup and briefed the Field Work Supervisor and Radcon on the techniques of using expandable foam. They are considering squirting expandable foam in the jumper openings to reduce the chance that contaminated liquid will drip out during handling. See attached Memorandum on Foaming Techniques.

4. Bob Anderson from WCH visited the Center to look at the Ridgid, web site: www.ridgid.com, hot tap tool discussed in last weeks activity report. He also was looking for ways to have a controllable supply air to a containment tent (greenhouse). The Center in the past have give facilities excessed 1000 cfm filters that are outdated. Showed Bob the sewn filter packs that the Center has in the mockup tent from Lancs, web site: www.lancsindustries.com, and a louver unit, similar to what you would place on the end of a storage unit that would allow air in when an exhaust system was in operation and would the louvers would shut when the exhauster was secure.

WCH donated 10 gallons of ALARA 1146 strippable latex paint to the ALARA Center for use by any on site facility. Contact the Center for further information.

WCH forwarded some photos of their D&D work at Building 303-M. See attachments. The photos show removal of a bag filter housing containing uranium material. It will be sent to the ERDF trench, placed in a pit and grouted. Please note the "claws" on the excavator.

5. FFTF Engineering visited the Center look at the new Nilfisk, web site: www.pa.nilfisk- advance.com, IVT 1000 CR HEPA filtered vacuum cleaner. This vacuum cleaner was discussed a couple of weeks ago in the Center's activity report. During their visit, they looked at a number of other HEPA filtered vacuum cleaner at the Center for upcoming work at FFTF.

6. Larry attended a presentation at AEA Technologies in Richland on a "Vortex Amplifier". This device has been used in the United Kingdom in gloveboxes for 30 years to automatically increase the ventilation flow if a breached glove or opening in the glove box is created. Point of Contact is Mike Crossley at (509) 946-5854 or email [email protected]. Apparently, DOE Headquarters will fund a demonstration of this product in July at Hanford and invite other DOE Sites to attend. We are evaluating including this as part of the Hanford ALARA Workshop scheduled for July 17 and 18.

7. A couple of weeks ago, WRAP operations visited the Center looking for a cutting tool that would shear the bolt on a drum lid ring in the process line. There were some special requirements, such as needing to have a thin cutting blade, < 3/8", and light enough to allow workers to handle the tool through the process ports. A vendor, Mega-Tech Services, Inc, has developed such a tool. Notified the WRAP operations person, with the vendor contact person and phone number.

8. Contractor from INEEL called asking for advice on changing highly contaminated glove box windows. Three windows apparently were broke when a waste drum was dropped inside the glove box. Recommended they do it the same way PNNL and WRAP have done recently. Install an Inflatable Abatement Containment made for asbestos removal and shove it against the glove box. A worker then goes inside and cuts a hole in the containment wall around the window and tapes the wall around the outside of the window. Workers then dress in PPE and enter tent. Job is over in less than 2 hours. Inflatable Abatements will send videotape upon request. Call (800) 962-2565

FOR YOUR INFORMATION

Jerry gave a presentation to the RadCon COE on availability of signs for posting outdoors at Hanford that could better withstand the Hanford environment. He had sign product examples from G/O Corp., Safety and Supply, National Safety, Unitech, and the Hanford Sign Shop. He also had information from other DOE sites and commercial nuclear as to signs that work the best and the longest in their particular environment.

VENDOR CORNER

1. The Center received package of color-sized anti-C gloves from UniTech and a brochure on rolling carts that are filled with protective clothing. UniTech operates the Hanford Laundry on Horn Rapids. See info at http://www.u1st.com/index.php or call Dick Downard at 375-5336. Received videotape showing the operation of Ridgid's Hot Tap Model RT-3422. We have one of these tools on display for another week that can be demonstrated. The latest OE Summary has an article about the hazards in working with acids. Read it at http://www.eh.doe.gov/paa/oesummary/oesummary2006/OES2006-02.pdf

2. Nick Clyma for Everest VIT, web site: www.everestVIT.com was at the Center last Thursday for the day. The had meetings with CH2M Hill and the VIT plant. He spent the remainder here at the Center meeting with site folks. Everest VIT is now part of General Electric Inspection Technologies and sell video cameras, remote cameras and robotics.
