AIOH 2018 provides the opportunity to continue the tradition established 36 years ago – to come together to learn, share and and renew acquaintances with delegates and guests from across the globe. I welcome all visitors to the wonderful city of Melbourne, voted the world’s most livable city for seven consecutive years. AIOH 2018 provides a tantalising scientific program spanning a range of professional education and development sessions to suit the needs of each delegate, intermingled with a lively social program and networking opportunities. The scientific program includes a diversity of topics which may leave some difficulty in choosing which parallel session to attend. The keynote presentations and concurrent sessions will excite and challenge you, whilst providing the opportunity for career development and knowledge which will assist you in protection of worker health. For those delegates interested in learning about the occupational hygiene advances and activities occurring internationally, I highly recommend attending the sessions by International Occupational Hygiene Association (IOHA), Asian Network of Occupational Hygiene (ANOH) and the Occupational Hygiene Training Associates (OHTA). In line with the theme for AIOH2018 – ensure you challenge yourself by attending the ‘Speed Dating” meet and greet and other networking events. These opportunities allow you to meet national and international delegates from all over the world. You might meet a mentor, find the solution to a problem you have been trying to solve, or establish new professional connections and friendships. The AIOH 2018 Trade Exhibition provides an opportunity for delegates to discuss occupational hygiene issues with a range of specialist service and equipment providers. With the rapid evolution of technology, you may find that the equipment you seek will be available sooner than you anticipate – so take the time to talk with the Exhibitors. You may even come across that elusive item of new equipment that you have been waiting for! I would like to acknowledge the hard work of Yanel Lara and the AIOH 2018 Conference Committee in planning, preparing and delivering this conference. Our venue is the Crown Conference Centre, a purpose built, modern conference facility on the south bank of the Yarra River in cosmopolitan Melbourne. The Centre is close to cafes and restaurants, the cultural and arts precinct, stylish retailers and iconic sportive venues- one or all of which will please both Conference attendees and their partners. Our Scientific Programme addresses our Conference Theme: Challenges, Opportunities & Solutions by bringing together speakers from across the globe and Australia to present on a wide variety of areas impacting on our Occupational Hygiene profession: trending and challenging issues such as PFAS, occupational lung disease, worker emotional and social health; opportunities to make a difference in areas such as recycling industries, the changing nature of work and fatigue management; and technological solutions found in emergency response, visual worker communication, exposure estimation and genetic susceptibility. The Concurrent Sessions, Posters and Exhibition together with Excite will complement this Conference theme by presenting the many practical aspects of our work as Occupational Hygienists.     Hazard Prevention and Control in the Work Environment: Airborne Dust WHO/SDE/OEH/99.14 Chapter 1 - Dust: Definitions and Concepts Airborne contaminants occur in the gaseous form (gases and vapours) or as aerosols. In scientific terminology, an aerosol is defined as a system of particles suspended in a gaseous medium, usually air in the context of occupational hygiene, is usually air. Aerosols may exist in the form of airborne dusts, sprays, mists, smokes and fumes. In the occupational setting, all these forms may be important because they relate to a wide range of occupational diseases. Airborne dusts are of particular concern because they are well known to be associated with classical widespread occupational lung diseases such as the pneumoconioses, as well as with systemic intoxications such as lead poisoning, especially at higher levels of exposure. But, in the modern era, there is also increasing interest in other dust-related diseases, such as cancer, asthma, allergic alveolitis, and irritation, as well as a whole range of non-respiratory illnesses, which may occur at much lower exposure levels. This document aims to help reduce the risk of these diseases by aiding better control of dust in the work environment. The first and fundamental step in the control of hazards is their recognition. The systematic approach to recognition is described in Chapter 4. But recognition requires a clear understanding of the nature, origin, mechanisms of generation and release and sources of the particles, as well as knowledge on the conditions of exposure and possible associated ill effects. This is essential to establish priorities for action and to select appropriate control strategies.

Occupational risk assessment is one of the most important yet also challenging tasks for employers. Most assessment tools to date use questionnaires, expert interviews, and similar tools. Video analysis is a promising tool for risk assessment, but it needs an objective basis. A video of a plastering worker was recorded using a 360◦ camera. The recording was then analyzed using the developed observational matrix concerning Work Characteristics, Work Activities as well as potential risks. Risk factors present during the video of the work included lifting, fall from ladder, hazardous substances as well as occasionally bad posture. Final report from sub-project “implementation strategies” within the HERIVIS project Gunnar Rosén and Ing-Marie Andersson Högskolan Dalarna, Sweden Project financed by ZIT Zentrum für Innovation und Technologie GmbH Vienna, Austria Abstract Video exposure monitoring (VEM) is a group of methods used for occupational hygiene studies. The method is based on a combined use of video recordings with measurements taken with real-time monitoring instruments. A commonly used name for VEM is PIMEX. Since PIMEX initially was invented in the mid 1980’s have the method been implemented and developed in a number of countries. With the aim to give an updated picture of how VEM methods are used and to investigate needs for further development have a number of workshops been organised in Finland, UK, the Netherlands, Germany and Austria. Field studies have also been made with the aim to study to what extent the PIMEX method can improve workers motivation to actively take part in actions aimed at workplace improvements. The results from the workshops illustrates clearly that there is an impressive amount of experiences and ideas for the use of VEM within the network of the groups participating in the workshops. The sharing of these experiences between the groups, as well as dissemination of it to wider groups is, however, limited. The field studies made together with a number of welders indicate that their motivation to take part in workplace improvements is improved after the PIMEX intervention. The results are however not totally conclusive and further studies focusing on motivation are called for.
