Collaboration, Christian Mission and Contextualisation: The Overseas Missionary Fellowship in West Malaysia from 1952 to 1977 Allen MCCLYMONT A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of Kingston University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History. Submitted June 2021 ABSTRACT The rise of communism in China began a chain of events which eventually led to the largest influx of Protestant missionaries into Malaya and Singapore in their history. During the Malayan Emergency (1948-1960), a key part of the British Government’s strategy to defeat communist insurgents was the relocation of more than 580,000 predominantly Chinese rural migrants into what became known as the ‘New Villages’. This thesis examines the response of the Overseas Missionary Fellowship (OMF), as a representative of the Protestant missionary enterprise, to an invitation from the Government to serve in the New Villages. It focuses on the period between their arrival in 1952 and 1977, when the majority of missionaries had left the country, and assesses how successful the OMF was in fulfilling its own expectation and those of the Government that invited them. It concludes that in seeking to fulfil Government expectation, residential missionaries were an influential presence, a presence which contributed to the ongoing viability of the New Villages after their establishment and beyond Independence. It challenges the portrayal of Protestant missionaries as cultural imperialists as an outdated paradigm with which to assess their role. By living in the New Villages under the same restrictions as everyone else, missionaries unconsciously became conduits of Western culture and ideas. At the same time, through learning local languages and supporting indigenous agency, they encouraged New Village inhabitants to adapt to Malaysian society, while also retaining their Chinese identity.

Through the years, poor maintenance is slowly but surely deteriorating the condition of the four once beautiful public parks in the city. One needs to just visit these public parks to see the condition. Why, and what is wrong with the Ipoh City Council that the condition of these public parks – Taman D.R.Seenivasagam, Ipoh Riverfront Park, Gunung Lang Recreation Park and Sultan Abdul Aziz Recreation Park – are continuing to decline? • Naming Places in Malaysia: a Historical Perspective
ABSTRACT Naming Places in Malaysia: A Historical Perspective Peninsular Malaysia alone has numerous places whose names are very interesting but their origins are somewhat obscure, e.g., Mambang Di Awan ) (lit. Fairies in the Clouds, in Perak), Yong Peng ( in Johor), Batu Gajah (elephant stone, in Perak), Tanjong Kling (in Malacca), Kampar (in Perak), and Kuala Lumpur itself, the national capital. It is important to realize that there was no such political entity as ‘Malaya’ or ‘Malaysia’ before 1948. ‘Malaya’ was used unofficially to refer to several Malay kingdoms in the Malay Peninsula ‐ each was an independent sovereign kingdom. After the coming of the English traders’ to the Straits of Malacca, beginning from the late 18th century , four of the settlements: Penang, the Dinding district in Perak, Malacca and Singapore, were, in 1826, amalgamated and became known as the ‘Straits Settlements’ placed under the government of the East India Co. in India. These in 1867 became a British Crown Colony. In the Peninsula, beginning from 1895, nine of the monarchies already existed but, until World War II, Britain did not attempt to colonize them. Most of the Malay kingdoms derived their names from the rivers where each began: e.g. Perak from the Perak river; Terengganu from the Terengganu river; and Selangor from the Selangor river. Only Negeri Sembilan was not named after a river. After the establishment of British administration ‐‐ not rule ‐‐ a number of places were named after British officials: Port Weld (Perak), Teluk Anson (now Teluk Intan also in Perak), Port Swettenham (now Pelabuhan Klang in Selangor), Port Dickson (Negeri Sembilan), and Province Wellesley (now Seberang Prai).
