Non solo nel 2020 hanno compiuto 70 anni, ma sono stati anche dichiarati la striscia di fumetti più famosa al mondo. Nonostante tutto per Charlie Brown e I Peanuts il 2020 è stato un anno memorabile. Ideati da Charles Monroe Schultz, I Peanuts vedono per la prima volta la luce il due ottobre del 1950. Pubblicati però con il nome di Lil’folks, “personcine”. In seguito , per motivi editoriali, legati a uno show televisivo per bambini, Hoody Doody, che indicava la peanuts Gallery come un luogo adatto all’infanzia, Schulz ne cambia il nome in Peanuts, “noccioline” Peanuts che nome ridicolo In realtà Schulz non sopportò mai troppo quel nome perché riteneva che ridicolizzasse la sua opera. Ma, come dice uno dei suoi personaggi, Lucy Van Pelt, «più si invecchia, meno si è sicuri rispetto a un sacco di cose». Nome ridicolo o no e considerazioni di Lucy a parte , Schulz realizzò sempre in prima persona i suoi Peanuts, senza avvalersi di assistenti, nemmeno per i testi e il colore. Nel 1999 smette di disegnare le strisce che si interrompono, dopo 50 anni di uscite quotidiane, in rispetto alla sua volontà di non volere eredi che continuassero la serie. Schulz si spegne l’anno dopo. Charlie Brown Il primo personaggio a comparire è proprio Charlie Brown. Testa tonda e un maglione giallo con motivo nero a zig-zag, diventano i suoi inconfondibili tratti. Dirige una squadra di baseball che perde sempre, scarso lanciatore e studente non troppo brillante. Rappresenta il disagio di una vita condannata alla mediocrità, ma suggerisce anche ai lettori di non mollare mai. Schultz con Charlie Brown disegna in parte se stesso: padre barbiere, e grande timidezza. Charlie è il collante che lega tutti gli altri personaggi. Come Schultz. Snoopy A ruota arriva Snoopy, il cane di Charlie Brown. Non parla mai, i balloon del fumetto però ne mostrano i pensieri. Compie grandi riflessioni sulla vita in cima alla sua cuccia rossa. Rappresenta la grande fantasia e capacità di immaginazione e travestimento dei bambini. Snoopy, infatti, quando indossa un paio di occhiali neri, si trasforma nel ribelleJoe Falchetto. O ancora, con sciarpa, occhiali ed elmetto, sfreccia nei cieli sul suo Sopwith Camel (un aeroplano interpretato dalla sua cuccia) all’inseguimento del Barone Rosso. Molti piloti lo dipingono come porta fortuna sui loro aerei, durante la guerra del Vietnam. I Peanuts diventano talmente famosi che ispirano anche il nome dei due codici di comando della missione sulla Luna del 1969: Snoopy e Charlie Brown. Tutta la crew Man mano, negli anni, aumentano i personaggi, compaiono Lucy Van Pelt, e poi Linus, Schroeder, Piperita Patty, Franklin e Woodstock. Con loro Schulz non denuncia in modo esplicito i problemi legati alla disuguaglianza, al genere, alla razza e alle differenze sociali, ma li rende comunque evidenti, definendosi un “umanista secolare”. Koay* Abstract This study explores Zwilich’s Millennium Fantasy (2000), which not only exemplifies the nature of Zwilich’s personal creativity, but also reveals different musical influences on the composer. In her music Zwilich employs a variety of techniques to promote different playful impressions and surprises. The continuous playing of tricks on listeners throughout the two movements is one of the musical characters of the piece. In most cases, the sense of fragmentation created in the composition also results from Zwilich’s playful musical construction. In addition, jazz, popular and traditional idioms are nicely and evenly treated in the composition; the composition is not confined to one musical style. This piece might serve as a model of the perfect balance which Zwilich strikes between traditional and popular styles. The first concert, “Snoopy and Friends Go to the Orchestra,” offers a wide range of film, cartoon and contemporary music attuned to the ears of young audience members. “This is really aimed at families with children in elementary school,” said Alan Silow, SRS’s executive director. “We didn’t want people to perceive that our presence in the hall is only for the older generation.” The new Sonoma Paradiso Foundation Family Concert Series augments the symphony’s already ambitious education program, which reaches an estimated 20,000 kids a year through its four youth orchestras, summer camps, free concerts and programs in the schools. “We probably have the most comprehensive youth music program for a regional symphony orchestra in the state,” Silow said. “So this is a natural outgrowth of that mission.” The idea for the Family Concert Series took root about four years ago, when the orchestra was strategizing about the opening of the new hall and wanted to carve out their own niche in the programming. The symphony had presented children’s concerts in the past, but never a series. For the past six years, however, the orchestra has offered a summer concert for kids in partnership with Sonoma Paradiso, a foundation started in 2004 to help children in the community.

    Susquehanna Symphony Orchestra Sheldon Bair, Founder & Music Director December 3, 2011 Our 35th Season The Susquehanna Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1978 by Sheldon Bair and is a community orchestra of professional and amateur volunteer musicians. The Susquehanna Symphony’s home is in Harford County, Maryland, near the mouth of the Susquehanna River. The Orchestra performs a subscription series of concerts every year in addition to outdoor and chamber music concerts. The Orchestra has performed opera and ballet, as well as standard orchestral repertoire, and is known for its premieres of new works and performances of unusual repertoire. The Orchestra performed in St. Patrick’s Cathedral, New York City for over 3,000 people in November 2007, and at Carnegie Hall for 2,500 people in October 2009. This year marks the 35th Season of the Susquehanna Symphony Orchestra. Such longevity would not be possible without your support. We thank you for attending this evening’s concert, and look forward to many more years of making music! Mission Statement The Susquehanna Symphony Orchestra (SSO) strives to stimulate creativity and intellectual growth in the local community and volunteer musicians through the performance of diverse orchestral works. Thank You! The SSO would like to express their gratitude to Chris Schler and Laura Stafford from the Town of Bel Air for all their help with coordinating the concerts and contracts with Bel Air High School.
