At today's weekly general audience the Holy Father received a new tiara made for him and presented by Catholic and Orthodox Christians. The tiara was commissioned by Dieter Philippi (http://www.dieter-philippi.de/), a German Catholic businessman who has a great devotion to the papacy as well as to the call to Christian unity. The tiara was created in Sofia, Bulgaria by Orthodox Christians of the Liturgix studio (http://www.liturgix.com/). Today a small delegation of Roman Catholics and Bulgarian Orthodox on pilgrimage in Rome had the honor to present the tiara to the Holy Father in the name of Christian unity. Congratulations to Dieter and to all German Catholics and Bulgarian Orthodox involved with this wonderful project. Ut Unum Sint! DO NA TE (Images from l'Osservatore Romano). A very worthy and attractive tiara and felicitations to all who took this initiative. I would like to think that the Pope might wear it at least once, but realism suggests otherwise. If he would ever ECCLESIASTICAL VESTM ENTS AND CLERGY CLOTHING don it, and I highly, highly doubt that we'll ever see it on this particular pontifical brow, I'd think it would be for the Urbi et Orbi blessing of Easter, where he wears Bishop, Priest and Deacon Sets of Clothing Sticharions Eucharistic vestments, as his predecessors did on several occasions, with the Epitrachelions tiara. Other than that, the Tiara was a "secular" vestment utilized only in Under- and Outer-Cassocks processions that also featured the sedia and a whole host of other Bishop Mitres accoutraments that now find themselves in the museums. The making of the Book of Kells: two Masters and two Campaigns Vol. I - Text and Illustrations Donncha MacGabhann PhD Thesis - 2015 Institute of English Studies, School of Advanced Study, University of London 1 Declaration: I hereby declare that this thesis has not been submitted as an exercise for a degree at any other university, and that it is entirely my own work. _________________________________ Donncha MacGabhann 2 Abstract This thesis investigates the number of individuals involved in the making of the Book of Kells. It demonstrates that only two individuals, identified as the Scribe-Artist and the Master-Artist, were involved in its creation. It also demonstrates that the script is the work of a single individual - the Scribe-Artist. More specific questions are answered regarding the working relationships between the book’s creators and the sequence of production. This thesis also demonstrates that the manuscript was created over two separate campaigns of work. The comprehensive nature of this study focuses on all aspects of the manuscript including, script, initials, display-lettering, decoration and illumination. The first part of chapter one outlines the main questions addressed in this thesis. This is followed by a summary of the main conclusions and ends with a summary of the chapter- structure. The second part of chapter one presents a literature review and the final section outlines the methodologies used in the research. Chapter two is devoted to the script and illumination of the canon tables. The resolution of a number of problematic issues within this series of tables in Kells is essential to an understanding of the creation of the manuscript and the roles played by the individuals involved.

EVALDO XAVIER GOMES, O. CARM. Religion and the Secular State in Brazil I. SOCIAL CONTEXT According to data furnished by the general census in Brazil in 2000, Brazil had a total population of approximately 170 million inhabitants.1 The next general census, in 2010, revealed that the Brazilian population had reached approximately 200 million.2 In reli- gious terms, Brazil was and continues to be a nation in which Roman Catholicism pre- dominates, low church attendance by the Catholic faithful notwithstanding. Since the be- ginning of the 20th century, however, there has been a continuous decline in the number of Catholics in the composition of the Brazilian population. This tendency was more acute after the 1960s and is shown every ten years by the official census.3 An accentuated reli- gious syncretism also exists, with believers frequenting the worship services of more than one religious confession at the same time. Meanwhile, recent decades have witnessed the strong phenomenon of religious diversification, with a significant reduction in the per- centage of Catholics in the makeup of the Brazilian population,4 owing to the growth of other religious groups, especially the so-called Evangelical or Pentecostal churches.5 A 2007 study by the Getúlio Vargas Foundation, Centre for Social Policies, demon- strated, however, a trend in recent years towards stabilization of these percentages, as observed in the number of Roman Catholics.6 Even so, the changes in the composition of the Brazilian population that have occurred in the last few decades have created a diverse FR. University of Dayton Advisor: William L. Portier, Ph.D. Yves Congar’s theology of the laity and ministries is unified on the basis of his adaptation of Christ’s triplex munera to the laity and his specification of ministry as one aspect of the laity’s participation in Christ’s triplex munera. The seminal insight of Congar’s adaptation of the triplex munera is illumined by situating his work within his historical and ecclesiological context. The U.S. reception of Congar’s work on the laity and ministries, however, evinces that Congar’s principle insight has received a mixed reception by Catholic theologians in the United States due to their own historical context as well as their specific constructive theological concerns over the laity’s secularity, or the priority given to lay ministry over the notion of a laity.

Feature Integrating Ecology and Justice: The New Papal Encyclical by Mary Evelyn Tucker and John Grim Mat McDermott Una Terra Una Famiglia Humana, One Earth One Family climate march in Vatican City in June 2015. In Brief In June of 2015, Pope Francis released the first encyclical on ecology. The Pope’s message highlights “integral ecology,” intrinsically linking ecological integrity and social justice. While the encyclical notes the statements of prior Popes and Bishops on the environment, Pope Francis has departed from earlier biblical language describing the domination of nature. Instead, he expresses a broader understanding of the beauty and complexity of nature, on which humans fundamentally depend. With “integral ecology” he underscores this connection of humans to the natural environment. This perspective shifts the climate debate to one of a human change of consciousness and conscience. As such, the encyclical has the potential to bring about a tipping point in the global community regarding the climate debate, not merely among Christians, but to all those attending to this moral call to action. 38 | Solutions | July-August 2015 | www.thesolutionsjournal.org n June 18, 2015 Pope Francis thinking. THE CORE THEMES OF THE ENCYCLICAL FRATELLI TUTTI St. John Lateran, 15 November 2020 Card. GIANFRANCO RAVASI Preamble Let us begin from a spiritual account drawn from Tibetan Buddhism, a different world from that of the encyclical, but significant nonetheless. A man walks alone on a desert track that dissolves into the distance on the horizon. He suddenly realises that there is another being, difficult to make out, on the same path. It may be a beast that inhabits these deserted spaces; the traveller’s heart beats faster and faster out of fear, as the wilderness does not offer any shelter or help, so he must continue to walk. As he advances, he discerns the profile: a man’s. However, fear does not leave him; in fact, that man could be a fierce bandit. He has no choice but to go on, as the fear of an assault grips his soul. The traveller no longer has the courage to look up. He can hear the other man’s steps approaching. The two men are now face to face: he looks up and stares at the person before him. In his surprise he cries out: “This is my brother whom I haven’t seen for many years!” We wish to refer to this ancient parable from a different religion and culture at the beginning of this presentation to show that the yearning pervading Pope Francis’s new encyclical Fratelli tutti is an essential component of the spiritual breadth of all humanity. In fact, we find a few unexpected “secular” quotations in the text, such as the 1962 album Samba da Bênção by Brazilian poet and musician Vinicius de Moraes (1913-1980) in which he sang: “Life, for all its confrontations, is the art of encounter” (n.

A NOVUS ORDO WATCH ANALYSIS Michael Voris's Black Hole of Forgetfulness Occupy Wall Street, Benedict XVI and The Vortex Church Liberals Strike Again “The advent of a Universal Republic, which is longed for by all the worst elements of disorder, and confidently expected by them, is an idea which is ripe for execution. From this Republic, based on the principles of absolute equality of men and community of possessions, would be banished all national distinctions, nor in it would the authority of a father over his children, or of the public power over the citizens, or of God over human society, be any longer acknowledged. If these ideas are put into practice there will inevitably follow a reign of unheard-of terror.” ― Pope Benedict XV, Moto Proprio Bonem Sane, July 25, 1920 SECTIONS • The "something direct" that Benedict never said • About that "low level subterranean office…" • Dining at the Novus Ordo "moral buffet" • The PCJP's "helpful", "well-intentioned" call for a one-world government • Does the media really mean "the Vatican" = "the Pope"?
