I'm Rob. Neil And I'm Neil. Rob Now Neil, I know you're a keen swimmer. Neil I am. I try to get to the pool once a week and do a few lengths, yes. Rob That's good to hear because swimming is one of the best sports for keeping fit. It's an aerobic exercise – aerobic means a very active type of exercise that makes your heart and lungs stronger. The opposite of this is anaerobic – and for my question today Neil, I wonder if you know which of these activities is an example of anaerobic exercise? a) weightlifting b) kickboxing c) dancing Neil I don't have a clue but I'll pick my favourite sport – a) weightlifting. Rob Is that really your favourite sport?! Anyway, we'll find out the answer at the end of the programme. Neil So what about you Rob – do you visit the swimming pool very often? 6 Minute English ©British Broadcasting Corporation 2018 bbclearningenglish.com Page 1 of 4 Rob Only to use the cafe! I don't like anything aquatic – I mean connected to water. I just don't like getting wet - and swimming up and down a pool is just boring! Neil Well there are alternatives to plain swimming. There's synchronised swimming… Rob Synchronised – that's moving together at the same time or speed as someone else.

Aquarium Mermaids Multiskilled Entrepreneurs in the Creative Economy Tracy C. Davis and Sara Malou Strandvad Perhaps all children who become obsessed with Ariel in The Little Mermaid wish, for a time, that they could become merpeople.1 A few fulfil the dream. Today, self-declared merpeople (usu- ally cis-female mermaids, but signaled here with a gender-inclusive neologism) are on display in several contexts, on dry land as well as in water. The amateur leisure practices of mermaid cos- tuming and swimming are growing; they take place in local pools and at exotic tourist destina- tions and involve various time and financial commitments, as well as degrees of role immersion for the “mermaiding” participants and devotees (Hietzge 2014; Porter and Lück 2018; Stebbins 2001, 2007).2 Merpeople also surface (and descend) in newly popular performance niches as party attractions and entertainers at charitable events. These practices consolidate the figure of the mermaid among other staples — fairy-tale characters, pirates, and adventure heroes — as an identifiable and gendered fantasy type.3 Some practitioners transcend leisure pursuits and secure 1. This research was partially supported by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. 2. English is the lingua franca of the mermaid community and hence the English gerund “mermaiding” is used internationally. 3. After a lot of online research, the purchase of a monofin and four years designing, making and perfecting her first neoprene tail (since upgraded to a stunning gold and pink sequined one with the “biggest fin in the mermaiding world”), the Belgian splashed into the water, and has barely surfaced since. Helped by a Facebook page advertising her new underwater credentials, Mermaid Celine scored her first professional job at the age of 20 – starring in a video for Copenhagen’s Congress. She has since worked stints ranging from Belgian fantasy festival Elftopia to corporate events to a regular gig at Kokorico nightclub in Zomergem near Ghent, swimming for hours in the ceiling tank above the dancefloor. • A Case Study of a Mermaid School in Boracay, Philippines
MERMAIDING AS A FORM OF MARINE DEVOTION A case study of a mermaid school in Boracay, Philippines [Received August 2nd 2018; accepted August 12th 2018 – DOI: 10.21463/shima.12.2.18] Brooke A Porter Auckland University of Technology, Coral Triangle Conservancy, Manila and Umbra Institute, Perugia <[email protected]> Michael Lück Auckland University of Technology <[email protected]> ABSTRACT: Mermaiding, the practice of wearing a mermaid tail and/or costume, and often swimming in costume, began in the mid-20th Century and has since grown into a global phenomenon. Despite its increasing popularity, there appears to be no research exploring mermaiding as a tourism activity. Consequently, this is the first study exploring the motivations and experiences of mermaid tourists, employing a case study approach at a mermaid school on the island of Boracay in the Philippines. Semi-structured interviews with one male and eight females, including an instructor/owner, revealed three major themes – fantasy, coastal and marine environment and the marine “other” – with a further overlapping of three core subthemes – power, beauty and hedonism. These subthemes helped explain the motivations to partake in such activities, which included being a waterperson, mythology, novelty and marine conservation. Despite a range of nationalities among the respondents (Brazil, Germany, New Zealand, United States, Philippines and Sweden), it is suggested that more extensive research on mermaiding be undertaken, especially at various locations around the globe. KEYWORDS: Mertourism, human-aquatic relationships, mermaids, coastal and marine tourism, Boracay, Philippines I think it’s like a dream, you know? Everyone likes to dream a little bit.

Ocean Rising THE QUEST TO INSPIRE THE PUBLIC Ocean Rising Ocean Rising THE QUEST TO INSPIRE THE PUBLIC INTRODUCTION Our modern world came to a standstill in 2020, with the global COVID-19 pandemic pausing the fast-paced existence many of us led and proving unequivocally that existential threats are not just the stuff of Hollywood disaster movies. What steps would humanity have taken if we had known years in advance the turmoil that 2020 would unleash? We can’t change our past, but we can, with global knowledge and awareness, act to create a harmonious and healthy future. While often not at the forefront of conversation on the global stage, our ocean is the backbone of climate and life on this planet. Every day we see signs of its impact - in our weather, in nature, along our coasts. It is used to transport goods across our globe, feed more than half the population, and keep humans breathing. The ocean is a magnificent resource that quietly gives to all, but is taken for granted and rarely recognized for the role it plays in planetary and human health. In order to change this status quo, we need to inspire the public about the ocean as they are inspired by space. -03 What steps would humanity have taken if we had known years in advance the turmoil that 2020 would unleash?
