LOUIS ARMSTRONG Louis Armstrong & His All Stars & Big Band DESCRIPTION Louis Armstrong was one of the most influential figures in jazz with a career spanning five decades (1920s to the 1960s). The career starts with playing in brass bands and on riverboats in New Orleans, learning to read music and being one of the first musician to perform extended trumpet solos, moving to Chicago to play in King Oliver 's Creole Jazz Band , went to New York City to play with the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra , returning to Chicago to form his own group as Louis Armstrong and his Hot Five . Back in NY, he emerged as a vocalist with his scat singing style, enriched by matchless experience as a trumpet soloist. He kept touring well into his '60s, playing in Africa, Europe, and Asia, got a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. TRACKLISTING 1.01. Cabaret 1.02. This thesis explores how Jazz developed in Israel and the role education played. Jazz Education in Israel discusses the origin of educational programs such as the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music (1985) and the New School Jazz Program (1986). One question that was imperative to this study was attempting to discover exactly how Jazz became a cultural import and export within Israel. Through interviews included in this thesis, this study uncovers just that. The interviews include figures such as Tal Ronen, Dr. Arnon Palty, Dr. Alona Sagee, and Keren Yair Dagan. As technology gets more advanced and the world gets smaller, Jazz finds itself playing a larger role in humanity as a whole. iii Preface The idea for this thesis came to me when I was traveling abroad during the summer of 2015. I was enjoying sightseeing throughout the streets of Ben Yehuda Jerusalem contemplating topics when all of a sudden I came across a jam session. I went over to listen to the music and was extremely surprised to find musicians from all parts of Europe coming together in a small Jazz venue in Israel playing bebop standards at break-neck speeds.

    1 The TENORSAX of GEORGE HOLMES TATE “BUDDY” Solographer: Jan Evensmo Last update: Jan. 4, 2020 2 Born: Sherman, Texas, Feb. 22, 1914 Died: Chandler, Arizona, Feb. 10, 2001 Introduction: We became familiar with Buddy Tate very early through his recordings with Count Basie. I met him once, many years ago, at the Molde International Jazz Festival. He was a very kind man, and when he realized I was doing some useful work on ja zz tenor saxophone, he invited me to his hotel room for whisky. We had a very nice time together in the light summer night of Norway! Early history: His brother, a saxophonist, gave Buddy an alto in 1925. Two years later began gigging with McCloud's Night Owls (led by his cousin, trumpeter Roy McCloud). In 1929 played for several months in Wichita Falls with the St. Louis Merrymakers, later that year joined Troy Floyd's Band in San Antonio. Briefly with Gene Coy's Band, then with Terrence Holder's 12 Clouds of Joy from 1930-33. Worked with E. J. Malone and his Rhythm Kings (early 1933), Wesley Smiths' Band, ‘Tan Town Topics’, and Ethel May's Band before joining Count Basie in Little Rock, Arkansas (ca. July 1934). From late 1934 until early summer 1935 with Andy Kirk, played with band at Wiley College, Texas, then long spell with Nat Towles until joining Count Basie in spring 1939. Remained with Basie until September 1948, brief return in early 1949, then for the rest of that year worked mostly with Hot Lips Page, occasionally with Lucky Millinder.

    1 Clarence Williams & Spencer Williams Clarence Williams - 1 Spencer Williams - 46 Clarence Williams 1893-1965 First know as a pianist he later gained fame as a music publisher. His publications were both a guide and barometer for other jazz orientated publishers. He hired the best of arrangers (among them William Grant Still and Don Redman) and working bands could rely on the music he published as the genuine, authentic sound of this ever-increasing popular music to be called jazz. In his publications one could find the latest trends in jazz rhythms, chord progressions and the latest (and many times leading) trends and jazz „gimmicks‟ of the era. The use of jazz breaks, riffs, special effects (even examples of early rap) can be seen and found in his publications. His importance in the advancement and popularity of early written jazz cannot be over emphasized. On this program we will present many original compositions by Williams along with music by other composers which the Williams Publishing Company released. Clarence Williams was born in Plaquemine, LA in 1893, moving to New Orleans in 1906. One of his earliest musical experiences was in 1911 when he traveled with a minstrel show. Returning to New Orleans around 1915 he opened a music publishing business with A. J. Piron, a popular orchestra leader in the city. Moving the business briefly to Chicago he then permanently moved to New York City. He was very successful in this business and also was active in recording, especially with Okeh Records. Williams recorded more frequently than any other black musicians of the 1920‟s apart from Fletcher Henderson.
