THE RECORDINGS OF ERNEST ELLIOTT An Annotated Tentative Name - Discography ELLIOTT, ‘Sticky’ Ernest: Born Booneville, Missouri, February 1893. Worked with Hank Duncan´s Band in Detroit (1919), moved to New York, worked with Johnny Dunn (1921), etc. Various recordings in the 1920s, including two sessions with Bessie Smith. With Cliff Jackson´s Trio at the Cabin Club, Astoria, New York (1940), with Sammy Stewart´s Band at Joyce´s Manor, New York (1944), in Willie ‘The Lion’ Smith´s Band (1947). Has retired from music, but continues to live in New York.” (J. Chilton, Who´s Who of Jazz) STYLISTICS Ernest Elliott seems to be a relict out of archaic jazz times. But he did not spend these early years in New Orleans or touring the South, but he became known playing in Detroit, changing over to New York in the very early 1920s. Thus, his stylistic background is completely different from all those New Orleans players, and has to be estimated in a different way. Bushell in his book “Jazz from the Beginning” says about him: “Those guys had a style of clarinet playing that´s been forgotten. Ernest Elliott had it, Jimmy O´Bryant had it, and Johnny Dodds had it.” TONE Elliott owns a strong, rather sharp, tone on the clarinet. There are instances where I feel tempted to hear Bechet-like qualities in his playing, probably mainly because of the tone. This quality might have caused Clarence Williams to use Elliott when Bechet was not available? He does not hit his notes head-on, but he approaches them with a fast upward slur or smear, and even finishes them mostly with a little downward slur/smear, making his notes to sound sour. -

He was also a serious jazz enthusiast and collector. Tolley has graciously bequeathed his entire collection of jazz records to Carleton University for faculty and students to appreciate and enjoy. The recordings represent 75 years of collecting, spanning the earliest jazz recordings to albums released in the 1970s. Born in Birmingham, England in 1927, his love for jazz began at the age of fourteen and from the age of seventeen he was publishing in many leading periodicals on the subject, such as Discography, Pickup, Jazz Monthly, The IAJRC Journal and Canada’s popular jazz magazine Coda. As well as having written various books on British poetry, he has also written two books on jazz: Discographical Essays (2009) and Codas: To a Life with Jazz (2013). Tolley was also president of the Montreal Vintage Music Society which also included Jacques Emond, whose vinyl collection is also housed in the Audio-Visual Resource Centre. -

There is talk about Paul's family. An older brother/ Andrew, played a [tin] fife, but did not take up another instrument. The fife was very v popular in New Orleans at that time. Also [Emile Barnes] played the fife. Paul played the fife at six years; Sidney Bechet played the fife. Andrew Barnes was accidentially sTaot. He was trying to stop a fight and got shot. He was three years older than Paul. EB is about ten years older than Paul. Andrew was called "Boose"/ [which rhymes with "moose"]. Nicknames were very popular in New Orleans at that time. Paul Barnes gives a list of his siblings: (oldest to youngest) Emile, called "Mealy" [according to EB, t1'iere is no correct spelling of this]; then came Emily, then Adam, then Andrew, called "Boose", then Alice, then Paul/ called "Polo" (common nickname for Paul in New Orleans then), and Frances, the youngest, a girl. She died at about five years; she was tlie first of the siblings to die. "She taken sick and she passed." PB's father played guitar, but not in a band. It was a musical family on both sides. His mother's sister [his aunt] played guitar. Her husband and children were Marreros: Simon Marrero, the oldest son, played bass? Billy Marrero, also known as Billy Moran, the husband, played Tbass, Jol'in, the next son, played banjo and guitar; Lawrence, the next son/ played banjo and guitar? Eddie, the next son, played bass. -
The Influence of Louis Armstrong on the Harlem Renaissance 1923-1930
ABSTRACT HUMANITIES DECUIR, MICHAEL B.A. SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY AT NEW ORLEANS, 1987 M.A. THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY, 1989 THE INFLUENCE OF LOUIS ARMSTRONG ON THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE 1923–1930 Committee Chair: Timothy Askew, Ph.D. Dissertation dated August 2018 This research explores Louis Armstrong’s artistic choices and their impact directly and indirectly on the African-American literary, visual and performing arts between 1923 and 1930 during the period known as the Harlem Renaissance. This research uses analyses of musical transcriptions and examples of the period’s literary and visual arts to verify the significance of Armstrong’s influence(s). This research also analyzes the early nineteenth century West-African musical practices evident in Congo Square that were present in the traditional jazz and cultural behaviors that Armstrong heard and experienced growing up in New Orleans. Additionally, through a discourse analysis approach, this research examines the impact of Armstrong’s art on the philosophical debate regarding the purpose of the period’s art. Specifically, W.E.B. This thesis explores how Jazz developed in Israel and the role education played. Jazz Education in Israel discusses the origin of educational programs such as the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music (1985) and the New School Jazz Program (1986). One question that was imperative to this study was attempting to discover exactly how Jazz became a cultural import and export within Israel. Through interviews included in this thesis, this study uncovers just that. The interviews include figures such as Tal Ronen, Dr. Arnon Palty, Dr. Alona Sagee, and Keren Yair Dagan. As technology gets more advanced and the world gets smaller, Jazz finds itself playing a larger role in humanity as a whole. iii Preface The idea for this thesis came to me when I was traveling abroad during the summer of 2015. I was enjoying sightseeing throughout the streets of Ben Yehuda Jerusalem contemplating topics when all of a sudden I came across a jam session. I went over to listen to the music and was extremely surprised to find musicians from all parts of Europe coming together in a small Jazz venue in Israel playing bebop standards at break-neck speeds. -

A Case of Serious Misguidance ‘Big Charlie’ Thomas – or Charlie Gaines? By Michael Rader and K.-B. Rau For many dedicated collectors of classic jazz, the trumpet/cornet player ‘Big Charlie’ Thomas has become a most interesting figure, not because of the mystery of his name, but because of his outstanding and exquisite kind of playing in the Armstrong mode at this time, and also because of his enigmatic appearance and – a year or so later – his disappearance. For our listener´s group ‘Big Charlie’ Thomas always was a distinct individual, remarkable for his musical style, his elegant phrasing, his effortless embouchure - or ‘chops’ – and his most imaginative inventiveness. He certainly is one of a few extraordinary “marble-stones” among the top musicians of the Harlem era of jazz, documented on records. Only, that this individual lacked a factual name, the name “Big” Charlie Thomas, conferred by John R. T. Davies on a previously unidentified cornetist, was itself the result of the combination of two clues from different sources. The first was an exhortation of encouragement, presumably to the cornet player, on “Come and Get Me, Papa, Before I Faint” by Margaret Carter, singing with Buddy Christian’s Jazz Rippers., “Play it, Big Charlie”. The second was Eva Taylor’s vague memory of a musician called Thomas as a regular participant in Clarence Williams recording sessions (Storyville 15). This mysterious man had never been mentioned or documented before anywhere in the literature of jazz or even in the discographies, up to the very moment that Eva Taylor, Clarence Williams´ widow, mentioned his name when asked by some British collectors in 1967. -
