MARCH 8 The classic sounds of Moonlight Serenade will fill the Price Center at the University of California, San Diego when the Glenn Miller Orchestra performs March 8 beginning at 8 p.m. The most sought after Big Band in the world, constantly on the road, the Glenn Miller Orchestra returns to UCSD after two years, and now, as then, invites easy listening, and better yet, dancing in the Price Center Ballroom. Trombonist Larry O'Brien directs the 19-member band including five saxophone players, four trumpeters, four trombonists, three rhythm musicians (piano, bass and drums) and two vocalists. The results original Glenn Miller arrangements, as well as modern selections, many of them in the big-band style. "Mostly we play the old songs," says O'Brien. "We manage to insert new ones from time to time, but these are songs that lend themselves to the Miller sound." In addition to Miller's theme song, Moonlight Serenade, originally written by the musician as an exercise for a course in arranging long before he organized his band in 1938, golden oldies include Stardust, Rhapsody in Blue, A String of Pearls, Tangerine, The Nearness of You, Come Rain or Come Shine, Begin the Beguine and Chattanooga Choo Choo.

Accompanied by a first class cast of musicians, including her coproducer Brian Charette on piano, David Cook on Fender Rhodes, Chris Bergson on guitar, Mark Verdino on bass, Diego Voglino on drums and Chuck Mackinnon on trumpet, DeLeo breathes new life into these wonderful songs with a pretty voice and a distinctive delivery that makes the words she sings seem like they were written just for her. DeLeo begins the date with a fresh new interpretation of “If I Had You,” a song she first heard in high school on a Judy Garland recording from the thirties. Not wanting to do the song as a ballad, she eventually decided to try it as a bossa nova. The rhythm works well with the lyric and melody, conveying a feeling that is, in the words of the singer, “romantic and a little wistful, but ultimately hopeful.” Brian Charette’s piano accompaniment gives the music an authentic Brazilian feel, reminiscent of the swinging sounds of Sergio Mendes’ Brazil 66. Peggy Lee’s “It’s a Good Day” proves to be a perfect vehicle for DeLeo’s sweet, full-bodied voice and nuanced phrasing. Her rubato opening chorus convincingly conveys the melancholy mood of the ironic lyric, before she gradually picks up the tempo and begins gently swinging the song as a jazz waltz, transforming the feeling to one of cheerfulness.

Spragg Glenn Miller Archives Glenn Miller and his Orchestra, Cafe Rouge, January 1941 A Pivotal Year 1941 was a pivotal year in the history of the United States and for America’s number one bandleader, Glenn Miller. As of January 1, all ASCAP-licensed music (most popular music) was off the air. Glenn broadcast with a replacement BMI-licensed theme, “Slumber Song.” On January 17, the band recorded the classic “Song of the Volga Boatmen,” Bill Finegan’s traditional music response to Jerry Gray’s treatment of “Anvil Chorus.” If not for the broadcasting industry vs. ASCAP dispute, these two all-time Miller hits might never have been written or performed. Further changes arrived to shake up the successful Miller musical organization. A gossip columnist ran a story about Marion Hutton’s pregnancy, which pushed her to stop performing sooner than anticipated. By January 1941, Marion was only appearing on Glenn’s “Chesterfield Moonlight Serenade” broadcasts and not at the Café Rouge. Miller had to replace her. A young “dimpled darling” named Dorothy Claire from LaPorte, Indiana was singing for bandleader Bobby Byrne. Dorothy was under contract for three years with Byrne. So when Bobby learned that Glenn Miller intended to hire Ms. Claire, he promptly sued Miller for $25,000. However, Claire joined the Miller band on January 8. Glenn offered her a salary of $250 per week, a significant raise from the $75 per week she earned with Byrne.

March 6, 1987 Introduction: Oslo Jazz Circle learned to appreciate Eddie Durham’s guitar through the sessions for Commodore, and it is regrettable that he was not recorded more on this instrument. History: Brother of Joe (bass), Allen (trombone), Roosevelt (violin/piano/guitar), Earl (piano), Clyde (bass) and Sylvester (piano/organ). First played guitar in co-led ‘Durham Brothers’ Orchestra’, then began doubling on trombone. Toured (on trombone) with the 101 Ranch Circus Band until 1926, then worked with Edgar Battle’s Dixie Ramblers. During the late 1920s played in the Middle West with Eugene Coy, Jesse Stone, Terrence Holder, and Walter Page’s Blue Devils. Briefly with Elmer Payne’s ‘Ten Royal Americans’ (summer 1929), then joined Bennie Moten (1929). Remained with Moten until 1933, worked for a week with Cab Calloway, briefly with Andy Kirk. Worked as a staff arranger for Willie Bryant, then joined Jimmie Lunceford (early in 1935) as trombonist-arranger, was also featured as solo guitarist, was one of the pioneers of amplified guitar work. Joined Count Basie in 1937, principally as arranger, but also featured on trombone and guitar. Left (ca. July 1938) to concentrate on full-time arranging; scored regularly for Ina Ray Hutton, Glenn Miller, Jan Savitt, Artie Shaw, etc. Formed own big band in June 1940, later that year was musical director for Bon Bon (Tunnell) and his Buddies. In 1941-43 toured as musical director for all-girl ‘International Sweethearts of Rhythm’, later he directed his own all-girl band.
