The band was formed in 1969 by lead singer-guitarist- songwriter, Tom Johnston and drummer, John Hartman who teamed up with bass player, Dave Shogren and singer-guitarist-songwriter, Patrick Simmons. In 1971, they released their self-titled album and although the album failed to chart, the lead song “Nobody” became their first single. The band’s second album, Toulouse Street was one of their most successful albums and featured such hits as “Listen To The Music” and “Jesus Is Just Alright.” Michael McDonald then joined the band in 1975 when three years later, he partnered with musician Kenny Loggins and co-wrote the song “What A Fool Believes” for their eighth studio album, Minute By Minute. The song became the group’s second #1 single and was so popular that it earned the writing duo a Grammy Award for Record of The Year while the album spent five weeks at the top of the music charts. In total, the band has sold over 22 million records from the 1970’s to present day. Over the years, The Doobie Brothers’ music has evolved from a country/blues base into a sound emphasizing everything from R&B and jazz elements to guitar fueled rockers like “China Grove” and “Long Train Running” and the folky chart topper, “Black Water.” They have continually defied categorization while maintaining their signature sound … The Doobie Brothers is one band who will continue to rock well into the future. Dennis DeYoung, former lead singer of Styx, takes the Last Fling main stage on Friday, August 29, at 8 p.m. and will play the music of Styx. DeYoung is a Chicago native and a founding member of the famous rock group. DeYoung wrote eight of their nine top ten singles. Styx sold 35 million albums worldwide and was the only band to ever record four consecutive triple platinum albums. For more than four decades, DeYoung has been a singer, songwriter, keyboardist and record producer. They include appoximately 1/4 inch extra “bleed” around the perforations, in order to account for small differences in printers and software issues. If you print these labels on PLAIN PAPER, you will need to trim the extra bleed area away or they will not fit. Additionally, you should print these with Adobe Acrobat 7 (older versions may not produce the correct results), and you MUST make sure that the PAGE SCALING option is set to “NONE”. If you have PAGE SCALING set to “Fit To Printer Margins” or “Reduce to Printer Margins”, the graphics will not print at the correct size for the standard jewel case. This is the most common problem people have when they complain about the artwork not fitting the jewel case! BOBBY CHARLES LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie van Varik. Bobby Charles was born Robert Charles Guidry on 21st February 1938 in Abbeville, Louisiana. A native Cajun himself, he recalled that his life “changed for ever” when he re-tuned his parents’ radio set from a local Cajun station to one playing records by Fats Domino. Most successful as a songwriter, he is regarded as one of the founding fathers of swamp pop. His own vocal style was laidback and drawling. His biggest successes were songs other artists covered, such as ‘See You Later Alligator’ by Bill Haley & His Comets; ‘Walking To New Orleans’ by Fats Domino - with whom he recorded a duet of the same song in the 1990s - and ‘(I Don’t Know Why) But I Do’ by Clarence “Frogman” Henry. It allowed him to live off the song-writing royalties for the rest of his life! No albums were by him released in this period. Two other well-known compositions are ‘The Jealous Kind’, recorded by Joe Cocker, and ‘Tennessee Blues’ by Kris. Disenchanted with the music business, Bobby disappeared from the music scene in the mid-1960s but returned in 1972 with a self-titled album on the Bearsville label on which he was accompanied by Rick Danko and several other members of the Band and Dr John. Bobby later made a rare live appearance as a guest singer on stage at The Last Waltz, the 1976 farewell concert of the Band, although his contribution was cut from Martin Scorsese’s film of the event. Bobby Charles returned to the studio in later years, recording a European-only album called Clean Water in 1987.
