La confianza, llena de errores; la desconfianza, encogida de terrores; aquélla, muy presuntuosa, y estotra, muy abatida; aquélla, desvaneciendo el celebro, y ésta desjarretando las fuerzas; y así me determiné de poner por medio a la humildad, que no solamente es tan acepta a los ojos de Dios, pero a los de los más ásperos jueces del mundo. Comuniquélas con el licenciado Tribaldos de Toledo, muy gran poeta latino y español, docto en la lengua griega y latina, y en las ordinarias, hombre de consumada verdad; y con el maestro fray Hortensio Félix Paravesín, doctísimo en letras divinas y humanas, muy gran poeta y orador; y alguna parte dello con el padre Juan Luis de la Cerda, cuyas letras, virtud y verdad están muy conocidas y loadas; y con el divino ingenio de Lope de Vega, que como él se rindió a sujetar sus versos a mi corrección en su mocedad, yo en mi vejez me rendí a pasar por su censura y parecer; con Domingo Ortiz, secretario del Supremo Consejo de Aragón, hombre de excelente ingenio y notable juicio; con Pedro Mantuano, mozo de mucha virtud y versado en mucha lección de autores graves, que me pusieron más ánimo que yo tenía; y no sólo me sujeté a su censura, pero a la de todos cuantos encontraren alguna cosa digna de reprehensión, suplico me adviertan della, que seré humilde en recebilla. -

Richard James Schneer registró cronológicamente las obras impresas por Juan de la Cuesta en el lapso de 1604 a 1625, dando por resultado una interesante bibliografía. Este impresor tuvo el mérito de haber publicado en Madrid varias ediciones Príncipes de destacados autores, entre ellas, la obra inmortal de las letras castellanas: EL INGENIOSO HIDALGO DON QVIXOTE DE LA MANCHA escrita por Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, tanto la primera parte publicada en enero de 1605, como la segunda en 1615; una edición que clasificó como sub-Príncipe, en febrero de 1605 y otra de 1608 ambas correspondientes a la primera parte, lo que demuestra la demanda que tuvo esta obra desde los primeros años de su publicación. -

Ruiz, Co-chair Professor Efrain Kristal, Co-chair This dissertation analyzes selected texts from Cervantes and his classical and early modern sources, focusing on his treatment of violence. It aims to respond to Nabokov’s famous indictment that Don Quixote was ‘the cruelest’ book ever written. Building on a critical framework that includes the work of René Girard, Steven Pinker and Frederick de Armas among others, my study looks at violence specifically from the perspective of genre – primarily the chivalric, the epic and the picaresque – emphasizing how the author’s thinking about violence was inevitably colored by pre-existing fictional paradigms. Instead of approaching violence by bringing ethics and philosophy to bear upon literature, such as the debate over the role of humor in the early modern period, I am more interested in examining how various literary categories inflect and nuance the author’s treatment of sacred, chivalric, epic or picaresque violence. To this end I examine 1) the particularly quixotic conjunction of chivalry and hagiography manifest in the episode of the saints in Don Quixote Part II, 2) Cervantes’ frequent, conflicted and evolving use of Virgilian formulas for the purpose of epic characterization, and 3) the tendency of the picaresque genre to feature prominent facial and bodily scars on its protagonists, a marker for social stigma that the author adapted quite cleverly in his Prologue to the Novelas ejemplares. -

MARCAS TIPOGRÁFICAS ISSN 2255-5544 ISSN 2255-5544 De Juan de la Cuesta a los Herederos de Pedro Madrigal y María de Quiñones Publicado por Carlos Fernández González, 02/05/2020, en Marcas Tipográficas Resumen Tras una introducción sobre la historia de la imprenta que Pedro Madrigal estableció en Madrid en 1586, este artículo se centra en las producciones del taller desde la última que se realizó bajo el nombre de Juan de la Cuesta en 1625 hasta los últimos impresos en los que aparecen los Herederos de la Viuda de Pedro Madrigal en 1639, una mención que se venía simultaneando con el nombre de María de Quiñones desde 1632. Finalmente se da el corpus bibliográfico de los impresos de esta etapa, desde 1625 a 1639, y por primera vez se hace la descripción bibliográfica material del último impreso en el que aparece el nombre de Juan de la Cuesta, la Tercera y cuarta partes de Fuente de Aganipe de 1627. Abstract After an introduction on the history of the printing press that Pedro Madrigal established in Madrid in 1586, this article focuses on the productions of the workshop from the last one that was made under the name Juan de la Cuesta in 1625 to the latter prints in which the Hererderos de la Viuda de Pedro Madrigal appeared in 1639, a mention that had been simultaneous with the name of María de Quiñones since 1632. Finally, the bibliographic corpus of the prints of this stage is given, from 1625 to 1639, and for the first time the typographical description of the last printed in which the name of Juan de la Cuesta appears, the Tercera y cuarta partes de Fuente de Aganipe of 1627. -

Las expectativas de venta hubieron de ser amplias, pues, habiendo pasado apenas un mes de la publicación original en el taller de Cuesta, salieron dos ediciones más de las imprentas barcelonesas de Jerónimo de Margarit y Sebastián de Cormellas, respectivamente. En este trabajo, fruto de nuestra reciente edición del Marcos de Obregón, analizamos la especial relación que las ediciones de Barcelona mantienen con la princeps. Abstract: The Relaciones de la vida del escudero Marcos de Obregón, which Vicente Es- pinel published in 1618 in the Madrid presses of Juan de la Cuesta, aroused immediate editorial interest. Expectations of sale had to be high, since only a month after the orig- inal publication in the Cuesta workshop, two more editions came out of the barcelonian printers Jerónimo de Margarit and Sebastián de Cormellas, respectively. In this work, result of our recent edition of Marcos de Obregón, we analyze the special relationship that the barcelonian editions have with the princeps.
