Cactus brings the boogie, Roy Jay, PRINT Jackson Browne and Mozart Sason REPRINT OR LICENSE follow TEXT SIZE:

This week’s Sound Check kicks off with a DVD featuring , , Jim McCarty and Jimmy Kunes: the 2006-2007 line up of Cactus. New recordings from Roy Jay and Mozart Season are also included, as well as a career-spanning DVD set from Jackson Browne.

‘Live Loud & Proud,’ Cactus (MVDvisual HHHH)

Cactus was initially conceived as early as late 1969 by the of bassist Tim Bogert and drummer Carmine Appice with guitarist and singer from the already dissolved Jeff Beck Group. However, Beck had an automobile accident and Stewart joined in Faces. Appice and Bogert brought in blues guitarist McCarty from Express and singer (who passed March 6, 1982) from Amboy Dukes to complete Cactus’ original 1970 line-up.

The 2006 version with former Savoy Brown vocalist Kunes and Randy Pratt on harmonica is presented on this Aug. 24 DVD, as well as (reviewed Sept. 2, 2006).

Highlights here include McCarty’s playing throughout, the sludgy groove of “Long Tall Sally,” the newer “Muscle and Soul,” the double-bass driven “Parchman Farm” and the “jam at NAMM” featuring Pat Travers, Warren Haynes and Joe Bonnamassa Quick Job Search joining the boogie trip. Lovers of heavy boogie-, get this one immediately.

‘Nightmares,’ Mozart Season (Equal Vision Records, HH)

This July 20 CD is an EP, which means these guys (Nate Richardson/vocals, Benton Christensen/guitar, Sam Trux/guitar, Troy Cooper/bass and Luke Allen/drums) wanted to get something out quickly after signing with Equal Vision. The was recorded at Fat Cat Studios with engineer Jay Top Jobs Trammell in March and will be available exclusively through MerchNow, digital retailers, and the band.

Richardson, or someone, is able to sing; but gruff Cookie Monster hollering takes the place of normal CLICK FOR MORE PHOTOS vocals on most songs. Good harmonies sometimes happen behind the CM stuff, which is disconcerting but welcome. The songs have lots of musical muscle, but aren’t very listenable for yours truly. Lovers of CM vocals who don’t mind regular mixed in, grab it.

‘Fairfax Avenue,’ Roy Jay (Rock Ridge Music, HHHH)

This bluesy Aug. 31 CD is Florida-based singer/songwriter Roy Jay’s first one that I’ve received. There are lots of blues and roots-rock flavored tunes here, with a groove that would inspire patrons to get up and shake it a bit. The other album, “Lucky Guy” is said to be more acoustic.
