New recordings from Roy Jay and Mozart Season are also included, as well as a career-spanning DVD set from Jackson Browne. ‘Live Loud & Proud,’ Cactus (MVDvisual HHHH) Cactus was initially conceived as early as late 1969 by the Vanilla Fudge rhythm section of bassist Tim Bogert and drummer Carmine Appice with guitarist Jeff Beck and singer Rod Stewart from the already dissolved Jeff Beck Group. However, Beck had an automobile accident and Stewart joined Ronnie Wood in Faces. Appice and Bogert brought in blues guitarist McCarty from Buddy Miles Express and singer Rusty Day (who passed March 6, 1982) from Amboy Dukes to complete Cactus’ original 1970 line-up. The 2006 version with former Savoy Brown vocalist Kunes and Randy Pratt on harmonica is presented on this Aug. 24 DVD, as well as CACTUS V (reviewed Sept. 2, 2006). Highlights here include McCarty’s playing throughout, the sludgy groove of “Long Tall Sally,” the newer “Muscle and Soul,” the double-bass driven “Parchman Farm” and the “jam at NAMM” featuring Pat Travers, Warren Haynes and Joe Bonnamassa Quick Job Search joining the boogie trip. The album was recorded at Fat Cat Studios with engineer Jay Top Jobs Trammell in March and will be available exclusively through MerchNow, digital retailers, and the band. Richardson, or someone, is able to sing; but gruff Cookie Monster hollering takes the place of normal CLICK FOR MORE PHOTOS vocals on most songs. Good harmonies sometimes happen behind the CM stuff, which is disconcerting but welcome. The songs have lots of musical muscle, but aren’t very listenable for yours truly. Lovers of CM vocals who don’t mind regular singing mixed in, grab it. ‘Fairfax Avenue,’ Roy Jay (Rock Ridge Music, HHHH) This bluesy Aug. 31 CD is Florida-based singer/songwriter Roy Jay’s first one that I’ve received. There are lots of blues and roots-rock flavored tunes here, with a groove that would inspire patrons to get up and shake it a bit. The other album, “Lucky Guy” is said to be more acoustic. • Detroit Rock & Roll by Ben Edmonds for Our Purposes, The
"KICK OUT THE JAMS!" Detroit Rock & Roll by Ben Edmonds For our purposes, the story of Detroit rock & roll begins on September 3, 1948, when a little-known local performer named John Lee Hooker entered United Sound Studios for his first recording session. Rock & roll was still an obscure rhythm & blues catchphrase, certainly not yet a musical genre, and Hooker's career trajectory had been that of the standard-issue bluesman. A native of the Mississippi Delta, he had drifted north for the same reason that eastern Europeans and Kentucky hillbillies, Greeks and Poles and Arabs and Asians and Mexicans had all been migrating toward Michigan in waves for the first half of the 20th Century. "The Motor City it was then, with the factories and everything, and the money was flowing," Hooker told biographer Charles Shaar Murray." All the cars were being built there. Detroit was the city then. Work, work, work, work. Plenty work, good wages, good money at that time."1 He worked many of those factories, Ford and General Motors among them, and at night he plied the craft of the bluesman in bars, social clubs and at house parties. But John Lee Hooker was no ordinary bluesman, and the song he cut at the tail of his first session, "Boogie Chillen," was no ordinary blues. Accompanied only by the stomp of his right foot, his acoustic guitar hammered an insistent pattern, partially based on boogie-woogie piano, that Hooker said he learned from his stepfather back in Mississippi as "country boogie." Informed by the urgency and relentless drive of his Detroit assembly line experiences, John Lee's urban guitar boogie would become a signature color on the rock & roll palette, as readily identifiable as Bo Diddley's beat or Chuck Berry's ringing chords.

NEW RELEASE for the week of Feb. 26, 2021 PRIORITIES & HIGHLIGHTS >> Pre-Order Now! CHAI "WINK" (SUB POP) SP1420 CASS/ LP/ CD May 21 street date. Since breaking out in 2018, CHAI have been associated with explosive joy. At the core of their music, CHAI have upheld a stated mission to deconstruct the standards of beauty and cuteness that can be so oppressive in Japan. Like all musicians, CHAI spent 2020 forced to rethink the fabric of their work and lives. But CHAI took this as an opportunity to shake up their process and bring their music somewhere thrillingly new. Having previously used their maximalist recordings to capture the exuberance of their live shows, with the audiences' reactions in mind, CHAI instead focused on crafting the slightly-subtler and more introspective kinds of songs they enjoy listening to at home. Their third full-length and first for Sub Pop, "WINK" contains CHAI's mellowest and most minimal music, and also their most affecting and exciting songwriting by far. CHAI draw R&B and hip-hop into their mix of dance-punk and pop-rock, all while remaining undeniably CHAI. DINOSAUR JR. "Sweep It Into Space" (JAGJAGUWAR) JAG366 LP/ CD DINOSAUR JR. "Sweep It Into Space (JAGJAGUWAR) JAG366LPC1 LP (translucent purple ripple)" April 23 street date. Here is "Sweep It Into Space", the fifth new studio album cut by Dinosaur Jr.. during the 13th year of their rebirth. Originally scheduled for issue in mid 2020, this record's temporal trajectory was thwarted by the coming of the Plague. But it would take more than a mere Plague to tamp down the exquisite fury of this trio when they are fully dialed-in.

ABSTRACT CAREY, DENNIS JOHN. The Effects of Benzyladenine on Ornamental Crops. (Under the direction of Drs. Brian Whipker and Wayne Buhler). A synthetic cytokinin, benzyladenine (BA), has recently been released in the U.S. as Configure® (2% liquid solution) for use on ornamental plants. Experiments were conducted to determine the efficacy of BA on various ornamental crops and to determine the optimal concentrations. BA was trialed on petunias, succulents, Paeonia, Salvia ’Caradonna’, and Helleborus ×hybridus and resulted in an increase in shoot number. Succulents (Sempervivum, Echeveria, Jovibarba, Agave, and Aloe) were the most reactive. The ideal foliar spray concentrations of 200 to 400 mg•L-1 applied one time increased offset formation by two times in five Sempervivum cultivars and in Echeveria. The ideal foliar spray concentration of 1600 mg•L-1 applied one time increased offset formation by two times in one cultivar of Jovibarba. BA foliar sprays applied two times were ineffective on three Agave cultivars and three Aloe cultivars. Foliar sprays, drenches, fertigations, bulb soaks and plug dips in a range of concentrations, application numbers and timings were evaluated on an additional 48 annual and perennial species. Applications of BA had minor positive effects, no effects, or negative effects and the most promising commercial applications will be presented. The Effects of Benzyladenine on Ornamental Crops. by Dennis John Carey Jr. A thesis submitted to the Graduate Faculty of North Carolina State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Science Horticultural Science Raleigh, North Carolina 2008 APPROVED BY: Wayne Buhler, Ph.D.
