We are pleased to announce that once again we will offer an Award For Excellence and two Ashton Hill Awards for the year 2016-17. These are training work placement Awards. We will also offer the Arthur & Helen Davis Travelling Scholarship. The deadline for entry is Friday 1st. April 2016, interviewing Monday 18th. April, 2016. We are also offering two Continuing Professional Development Awards, for more established artists, for which the deadline is 31st. January 2016. The Stevens Competition prizes are also being offered. Application details are available on the Glaziers’ Website: www.worshipfulglaziers.com on the “Competitions and Awards” pages. We would like to encourage you to apply. The aim of all the Glaziers’ Company’s awards is to raise standards of work within the craft, particularly in the U.K., by offering additional learning experiences to enhance the skills of potential workers. Applications for the Award For Excellence, the Ashton Hill Awards and the Travelling Scholarship are invited from individuals within the first five years of completing their training who are intending to undertake a long term career in stained glass, preferably within the U.K. Applications for the Continuing Professional Development Awards are invited from individuals who have worked in the craft for more than five years. The Award For Excellence and The Ashton Hill Award: These awards offer valuable opportunities for those wishing to develop their skills towards a practical career in stained glass. Recipients will be placed in high quality working studios where they will undertake mentored work experience on actual projects with the supervision, guidance and tuition of experienced professionals. The 10 week Ashton Hill Awards are offered to those wishing to develop their skills in conservation and/or glass painting. The 40 weeks Award For Excellence is an enhanced work experience program which provides individual tuition tailored to the needs and interests of the award winner. It is suitable for those with an interest in contemporary and traditional techniques and in conservation. Applications may be considered from exceptional conservators and painters in other media without prior glass experience who wish to expand their practice to include glass working. For both awards up to £265.00 per week is provided to assist with subsistence, rent and travel costs for the duration of the award. It can be challenging, even difficult, being away from your home, working what may be long hours, finding yourself less skilled than those around you and needing to do things you have never done before. However the rewards are great and the vast majority of past winners are now working successfully as glass craftsmen. You can read a bit more about these awards, obtain application details and see lists of the past winners names by visiting the Competitions and Awards pages on the Glaziers Website: www.worshipfulglaziers.com/?page_id=3160htm & www.worshipfulglaziers.com/?page_id=3175 Continuing Professional Development Awards are short duration help with training for professionals; whether by moving towards the attainment of accredited status as conservators, by obtaining tuition to increase their effectiveness and proficiency in practicing their craft or by developing their creative skills. The award could be used to assist someone to attend a masterclass, an advanced glass painting course, to learn about mortars and stonework installation, to seek tuition about glass chemistry, to shadow a fellow professional to learn a skill they do not already have such as edge bonding or glass cleaning or whatever else the awardee can demonstrate that s/he needs to learn to enhance working practices. These awards are particularly aimed at professionals unable to leave their work for long periods, so they typically enable attendance at short courses or short studio placements under expert tuition. Each award will offer up to £550.00 for tuition costs and £225.00 subsistence while learning. You can obtain application details at Website: www.worshipfulglaziers.com/?page_id=3192 Arthur & Helen Davis Travelling Scholarship: This Scholarship is awarded alternate years by the Company to a student of or an artist in Stained Glass. It is being offered in 2016. It is aimed at those who are still training and those within five years of having completed training may also apply. Its value is up to £1,500.00. The object of the Scholarship is to give the winner the opportunity to travel to widen their experience and to develop their study and knowledge of glass. Find details and application form on Website: www.worshipfulglaziers.com/?page_id=3203 Comments from previous Glaziers award winners; Ray Taylor won the Arthur and Helen Davis Travelling Scholarship 2013-2014. He travelled to England, Germany, Netherlands and France to research use of different types of glass in architecture. He said after the award; “I have been experimenting with reflected light since the award. I had already been aware of work in that field by Joost van Santen and was able to visit 2 of his installations during the travel award. It is impossible to fully appreciate the effect decorative glass has on space without actually experiencing it, so the award provided that opportunity and motivation for me. I always make reference to the travel award (and prizes in the Stevens competitions) at exhibitions and when promoting my work. I hope that those achievements might ‘give me an edge’ when in competition for projects. Eleanor Leahy won the Award For Excellence 2012-2013 and subsequently did a short term work placement at one of the studios in which she was placed during her award. Eleanor has an M.A. in Glass Conservation from York University; “As a previous recipient of the Award for Excellence, I feel that this work experience program has made a hugely positive impact on my career in stained glass. I feel that one of the best things about the award is having the opportunity to work in different studios. By completing the award I feel that I gained a completely unique learning experience which greatly improved my confidence and skills, and also put me in contact with eminent professionals working in the field. Over the course of my placements I spent time in studios that had varying approaches to conservation ethics and implemented different techniques using different materials. This allowed me to gain a unique perspective on contemporary conservation practices. I feel immensely grateful to the Worshipful Company of Glaziers for having awarded me this opportunity. Julia Gonyou won an Ashton Hill Award in 2014. She says: “It is a pleasure reviewing my studio experiences from the Ashton Hill Award and I am very thankful for the opportunities it has opened up for technical skill development. The Glazier’s Company and the BSMGP have presented a welcoming community of artists and craftsmen who contextualized the trade with valuable lectures and conferences. After studying drawing, painting & art history at university I pursued the study of stained glass through various courses, studio positions, apprenticeships and work placements. Taking this alternative route and being awarded the Ashton Hill has enabled me to learn under what I consider to be the best conditions which are working alongside other tradespeople, contributing to manual in studio projects and developing practical theory. It was brilliant to learn directly from Jonathan Cooke, never have I had such an eager, passionate and attentive teacher who held nothing back in relaying information. Holy Well Glass provided me with a new interest in that of conservation and restoration, a side of stained glass that I had little previous experience, an area I now find to be as relevant or more than fabricating new work. I give many thanks to those that have made apprenticeship opportunities like these available to emerging craft/ tradespeople; these experiences are priceless in the development of a specialized artistic glazing career.” Since completing the award Julia has found work at Reyntiens Glass Studio and continues to independently fabricate windows of her own design. *‘Craft Arts International’ Magazine. During the 31-years that Jenie Thomas and I have been at the helm of this magazine there has never been a dull moment and we have yet to miss a deadline. It has been a privilege to be entrusted with the publication of the works of leading artists and designer/makers from around the world. Though the task of commissioning, editing, compiling and producing each issue can be at times challenging, it’s always immensely satisfying and heaps of fun. Naturally, we wish this level of engagement to continue undiminished for years to come, but we must be realistic about securing the long-term prospects of this resilient and unique publication. The magazine already has an online presence and can be downloaded on most devices globally. Nevertheless, we realise that to take full advantage of the opportunities offered by broadband technology in the growth of readership and the promotion of studio craft, designer/making and the visual arts, a more vigorous level of interactivity is required through access to social media. Consequently, we have begun making some tentative enquiries and invite genuine expressions of interest from persons and publishers who may wish to acquire further details concerning the prospects of taking over the reins at Craft Arts International and becoming the magazine’s future custodians. *31/03/16 Closing Date For Entries: Stevens Architectural Glass Artist Of The Year 2016 Competition: Competition Brief launched, Monday 7th. September 2015. The brief is for the design and creation of a memorial window to the crew of The Titanic. Full details are available on the Glaziers’ Company Website: www.worshipfulglaziers.com/?page_id=3147 . Competition open to Architectural Glass and Design Students, or those Artists with less than five years in practice. First prize £1,000.00 in cash. Unique opportunity for entrants to win a commission. The Glaziers’ Company has announced that the prestigious Stevens’ Architectural Glass Art Competition 2016 is now open. Competition entrants are required to design a Memorial Window dedicated to the crew of the Titanic, to be installed at historic St. Mary’s in Southampton. The Church is closely connected with the ship which sailed from Dock Gate 4 close by. A total of eight hundred and eighty-five (885) crew were aboard the ill- fated ship, and six hundred and seventy-three (673) perished. Of the dead crew, some five hundred and fifty (550) came from Southampton, at the time a great tragedy for the city. There are several memorials around the world commemorating many of those who lost their lives on The Titanic. St Mary’s itself has a memorial to the ship’s musicians who famously played on as she sank. Yet, no memorial exists to commemorate all the crew together and the tragedy they suffered. The Chairman of the Glaziers’ Company Craft & Competitions Committee, Andy Lane, said: “This year’s competition will enable entrants to showcase their skill and creativity and gives them a real chance of winning a commission. We’d like to encourage as many student and new architectural glass artists and designers to enter as possible.” Michael Holman, the Stevens Awards Scheme Co-ordinator explained: “We are asking all entrants to incorporate a quotation from the Old Testament book Song of Songs ‘Many Waters Cannot Quench Love’ in their design, together with the emblem of the White Star, the company that owned the ship.”. Friends of St. Mary’s Church, together with the British Titanic Society, have been campaigning to raise funds for the window. The final decision about which of the entrants will receive the design commission rests with the church and the Diocesan Advisory Committee (DAC). The British Titanic Society’s crew memorial window fundraising page can be found at Website: www.britishtitanicsociety.com/a-special-appeal-on-behalf-of-st-marys-church-southampton/ The entries will be judged by a distinguished panel of glass artists and designers. The closing date for receipt of entries is Thursday 31st. March 2016. The winners will be announced at a prize-giving ceremony at Glaziers Hall, for the Stevens Competition and other awards, in London on Tuesday 31st. May 2016. Fri 13th. - Sun 15th. February. Casting glass is often seen as a long process - moulds and rubbers, positive and negatives forms, waxes, steaming out … and that's before the glass is in the kiln for a week or three, followed by the challenges of cold working. There is no getting away from the fact that a piece of glass will be in the kiln for a while and perfecting cold working takes some time. However, this course is aimed at embracing a spontaneous approach to the initial modelling process through looking at ways to be creative with materials and taking a more spontaneous view of cold working. There is a great freedom in the 'one off'. The practice of a maker need not involve producing multiples of one thing - why make a repeat mould of something when you can make a development on what you have made before rather than a copy or close representation. Website: www.theglasshub.co.uk/glass-courses/masterclass-kiln-casting-jo-harrington.php 14/04/1616/04/16: Masterclass: Kiln-Casting With Angela Jarman. Fri 14th. - Sun 16th. The emphasis will be on working with wax and moulded textures and translating these models through lost wax casting to explore the qualities of the glass, particularly surface pattern and texture. The class will be fully comprehensive demonstrating every stage of working; however for those with experience, a more detailed approach can be taken with lots of useful hints and tips. Angela Jarman’s creative ideas as a whole stem from her long interest in biology and the natural world. As well as the Crafts Council Collection, her work is held in other public collections including the Victoria & Albert Museum, London and the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. In this workshop we would like to explore both the potential that glass could have to change the way in which we perceive, and approach a technological device, in this case a radio, and how it could be an intrinsic part of its technical attributes, for example how sound is produced, or how the switch might work by using water poured in the glass vessel, as the conductor of electricity. This class is open to applicants from all backgrounds and will be supported by a glassmaker in the hot shop, who can work from drawings and instructions. If you are a glass blower it is possible make your own components. Website: www.northlandsglass.com/whats-on/rematerialisation-of-systems-kraftwerks/ 28/08/1630/08/16: ‘Casting In Nature’: Master Class With Colin Reid. Working with kiln-cast glass we will use the wonderful landscape and nature around North Lands as the source of form, texture and inspiration from which to cast. We will explore a variety of moulding techniques to translate natural forms into cast glass, working both outside in the landscape and in the studio. Previous experience helpful but not essential. Bring out clothes, this will be a messy workshop. Website: www.northlandsglass.com/whats-on/casting-in-nature-master-class-with-colin-reid/ 28/08/1630/08/16: ‘Reinventing The Sphere’: Master Class With David King. Artists, designers and glass makers alike will benefit from a back to basics approach with one on one technical support and no previous experience needed. Students will establish a strong foundation by learning how to 'set up' their bubbles in the Venetian style. Confidence gained through traditional vessel making will lead to exploration of the sculptural possibilities of the blown form. *New Directors Appointed For National Glass Centre & Sunderland’s Cultural Growth. Sunderland’s growing reputation in the cultural and creative industries has been boosted by the appointment of two senior arts executives. Keith Merrin, Chief Executive of Museums and Archives Northumberland, has been appointed as Director of National Glass Centre and Rebecca Ball, Director of The Cultural Spring, moves into the new role of Bid Director for Sunderland’s campaign to be named UK City of Culture 2021. The two directors will work together to help implement Sunderland’s cultural strategy that puts arts, culture and creative industries at the heart of the city’s future. Mr. Merrin, who has grown Woodhorn Museum in Northumberland into one of the North’s most successful visitor attractions, will take up his new post in March. As well as bringing the famous Tower Poppies to Woodhorn, he is also responsible for setting up the community arts project ‘Bait’ – part of the multi-million pound Creative People and Places program financed by Arts Council England. Ms Ball has also been successful in the Creative People and Places program as Director of The Cultural Spring, which works with communities in Sunderland and South Tyneside on projects including The Great North Passion and the Dominic Wilcox Inventors program. Both directors will work with the University of Sunderland which runs National Glass Centre and is a partner in The Cultural Spring along with Sunderland’s Music Arts and Culture Trust (MAC) and the Customs House in South Shields. The appointments were welcomed by the Dean of Arts Design and Media at the University, Graeme Thompson: “Sunderland is fortunate to have secured the services of two such experienced cultural leaders. Keith and Rebecca will play important roles in the continuing development of Sunderland as a cultural destination and creative powerhouse. “This signals a step change in the development of Sunderland’s cultural assets.” Keith Merrin said: “It’s an exciting time to be coming to Sunderland. National Glass Centre is going from strength to strength and the city itself is setting out ambitious plans to place arts and culture at the centre of its economic regeneration.” Rebecca Ball commented: “There is so much energy and ambition in Sunderland. As well as existing assets such as the Empire Theatre and National Glass Centre, there’s the exciting development of a new cultural quarter around the old Fire Station. The City of Culture bid is going to be an opportunity for Sunderland to establish itself as a national centre for arts, heritage and culture.” Paul Callaghan, of the MAC Trust, said: “We are delighted to have Keith and Rebecca playing such key roles in Sunderland’s cultural renaissance. Both bring great vision, experience and drive to their respective posts.” Councilor John Kelly, Sunderland City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Public Health, Wellness and Culture, said: "The appointment of two very experienced and enthusiastic individuals to these key posts demonstrates both our city’s ambition and our commitment to culture here in Sunderland. I’d like to welcome Keith in his new role at National Glass Centre. The centre celebrates both our cultural and industrial heritage and is something we, as a city are rightly proud of.” Welcoming Rebecca to her new role, Councilor Mel Speding, Chair of the city’s Cultural Partnership, added: "Planning has already begun and with our Sunderland Cultural Strategy, we already have a strong platform from which to progress. With Rebecca’s appointment we can now begin to focus, refine and deliver on those plans as we build up towards being the UK City of Culture 2021. “In their new roles I am sure that both Rebecca and Keith will be showcasing our city and raising our cultural profile even higher on both national and international stages.” The City of Culture bid is being supported by Sunderland City Council, the MAC Trust and the University of Sunderland. Keith Merrin is the Chief Executive of the Woodhorn Charitable Trust which runs four museums in Northumberland and the Northumberland Archives and delivers heritage, arts and cultural education and outreach work with people throughout Northumberland, the North East of England and online. He has recently overseen record visitor numbers at Woodhorn Museum and developed and secured over £3million in funding for the South East Northumberland arts project – bait. Formerly Director of Bede’s World he spearheaded the successful campaign to have Bede’s Wearmouth-Jarrow monastery nominated as a World Heritage Site and was Creative Director for Newcastle Gateshead Initiative. Keith is a 2004/5 Fellow of the Clore Leadership Program and a board member of the North East Culture Partnership. He was born in Sunderland and grew up in South Tyneside. Rebecca Ball began her career in dance working for The Place Theatre in London, CUE Arts Management and South East Dance where she led Community and Education projects. She has worked at Arts Council England in a number of roles, becoming Director of Arts for the South East region in 2010. She has an MA in Cultural Policy, and is a Fellow of the Clore Cultural Leadership Program through which she spent time at National Theatre Wales and with Ambassador Theatre Group. Since 2014 Rebecca has worked as Director of The Cultural Spring – a £2 million Arts Council England funded program working in Sunderland and South Tyneside to increase opportunities for arts participation in the area. National Glass Centre: Glass making is a key element in the history of Sunderland, bringing together its religious, social and industrial heritage. Ever since Benedict Biscop brought the first glaziers over from Gaul in 674 AD, Sunderland has had a rich glassmaking heritage. Glass making has played an important part in the industrial landscape of the city, with factories such as Pyrex and Hartley Woods providing employment and economic stability. Since the decline of these important industries, National Glass Centre at The University of Sunderland has been dedicated to continuing the legacy of glass making, supporting and nurturing new glassmaking talent with degree and PhD students studying at the largest Glass and Ceramics Department in Europe. The centre’s rich and varied exhibition, learning and participation programmes aims to foster enthusiasm and understanding of glass. National Glass Centre attracts 210,000 visitors each year and was built on former Thompsons Ship yard; it boasts a working Hot Glass Studio, where visitors can watch free, daily demonstrations and many internationally renowned glass artists have exhibited in the Centre’s galleries and completed residencies in the Hot Glass Studio. OBITUARY/IN MEMORIAM.

*Marvin Lipofsky: September 1, 1938 – January 15, 2016. Marvin Lipofsky, 77, renowned San Francisco Bay Area teacher and sculptor who worked with glass, died of natural causes at his home in Berkeley on Friday, January 15, 2016. Mr. Lipofsky was born and raised in Barrington, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, where his parents Henry and Mildred Lipofsky owned a small department store. He earned his B.F.A. in Industrial Design, 1957-1962 at the University Of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, followed by an M.S. and M.F.A. Sculpture, 1962-1964, University of Wisconsin, Madison. Mr. Lipofsky was among the first students to work with Harvey Littleton, the celebrated founder of the American Studio Glass movement, at the University Of Wisconsin, Madison. Immediately upon graduation, he was hired by the University Of California, Berkeley to build and direct its glass program, where he taught until 1972. Teaching full-time, he developed the glass program at the California College Of Arts & Crafts (now the California College Of The Arts) in Oakland where he remained until 1987, when he left to work full time in his studio in Berkeley until his death. Mr. Lipofsky’s work was prized for its rhythmic forms and complex concave and convex shapes, which suggested both abstract and organic sources. Glass was his chosen medium of artistic expression. A consummate colourist, and fine artist, Mr. Lipofsky took great advantage of the chromatic possibilities of working with hot glass. He was dedicated to honouring the artists who worked with him and the places where he made his work. Celebrated for his working method, Mr. Lipofsky regularly traveled to glass workshops around the US and the world (he visited 30 foreign countries, including Bulgaria, China, Israel, New Zealand, the Soviet Union, and from coast to coast in the US; he taught over 300 workshops around the world), where he gathered the raw material for his pieces, worked with local sculptors and their students in their hot shops, observed local communities and traditions, and then returned to Berkeley to assemble his final objects. Mr. Lipofsky functioned as an ambassador for sculpture in glass, often naming the groups of works that resulted from his voyage for their place of origin, for example, the Stockholm Series (1989) and the Kentucky Series (2000). Mr. Lipofsky’s work was widely exhibited and collected. It is included in the permanent collections of the Corning Museum Of Glass, the Museum Of Art & Design in New York, the Oakland Museum Of California, the San Francisco Museum Of Modern Art, the St. Louis Museum Of Art, the National Museum Of Modern Art in Kyoto, Los Angeles County Museum Of Art, the Metropolitan Museum Of Art in New York, the Renwick Gallery (National Museum Of American Art) Smithsonian Institution at Washington D.C., and the Musée Des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, among many others. The recipient of a Lifetime Achievement award from the Glass Art Society in 2009, he was also the subject of a retrospective exhibition at the Oakland Museum of California in 2003. A founding member of the American Studio Glass movement, he was the most influential glass artist in California. Marvin Lipofsky was a formidable character and leader in the close knit community of glass artists and collectors, within the USA and internationally. He will be greatly missed.
