This article shows that Pope Francis diagnoses economic inequality as both a structural problem and a problem of virtue, and that the virtue he calls for in response is what James F. Keenan, SJ has called Jesuit hospitality. Reviewing contemporary theological work on hospitality, I show that Francis’ Jesuit hospitality shares many features with hospitality as described by feminist theologians. Namely, it is risky, takes place across difference, acknowledges the marginality of both host and guest, and promises mutual benefit to each party. Francis’ account of the spiritual practice of encounter provides a concrete vision of Jesuit hospitality in action. This article contributes to existing literature on the uniquely Jesuit nature of Francis’ theology and to work showing the resonance of his intellectual standpoint with feminist approaches. It proposes a Christian virtue response to the pressing contemporary problem of economic inequality. Keywords: inequality; virtue; hospitality; Jesuit; Pope Francis; feminism 1. Introduction In today’s globalized, unequal world, 2.2 billion people live on less than $2 U.S. per day while 62 individuals own as much wealth as the poorest half of the world [1]. This and other shocking statistics have made economic inequality an issue of urgent concern for scholars, policy makers and religious leaders. -

The Communists and the Bulgarian .Orthodox Church, 1944-48: The Rise and Fall of Exarch Stefan SPAS T.RAIKIN For a long time before the communist takeover in Bulgaria on 9 Sep tember 1944, the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and the Communist Party had been in a state of open hostility. The Bulgarian communists held firmly to the Marxist view that religion is the opium ofthe people. They carried on agitation at every level to discredit religion and the Church-. Intellectuals were told that to hold any religious beliefs is to regress to superstition. For the peasants and working classes, the priest was reduced to an object of ridicule for his laziness and immorality, illustrated with many degrading stories. This campaign, waged largely by young men who had. received some education in provincial towns, was conducted primarily in village taverns and on street corners where peasant youth congregated in the absence of any other social outlets, and was highly successful. To this challenge the Church could not find an adequate response. The mutually exclusive philosophical positions of Church and communism deprived both Church and Party of any point of contact. They remained total strangers, completely opposed to each other. The Communist Party never tried to infiltrate the Church or to create its own following there. Unlike the Orthodox Church in Yugoslavia, where numerous priests found themselves in the partisan groups of Marshal Tito, the Bulgarian Church was conspicuously absent from the "Fatherland Front" organised by the communists as a front to take over the country in 1944. The Church was part of the political and social order in the country, and was dependent upon this order for its survival. -

The National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother Portland, Oregon USA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Job Description, Core Requirements, and Application Instructions GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Executive Director is hired by and responsible to The National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother (The Grotto) Board of Directors. The Executive Director, a Roman Catholic, will have overall responsibility for the management of The Grotto. The Executive Director will collaborate with the Rector, who provides the Catholic leadership consistent with the directives of the Catholic Church and the Order of Friar Servants of Mary. The Executive Director will be responsible for the day-to-day administration of the Corporation, working closely with the Chair of the Board of Directors to ensure that all corporate functions are aligned with the Bylaws of The National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother, an Oregon corporation. The Executive Director will collaborate with the shrine Rector in support of ministerial and spiritual functions. With support from The Grotto managers and other staff members, the Executive Director will work to enhance the philosophy and mission of the shrine. Studia Judaica (2017), Special English Issue, pp. 45–69 doi:10.4467/24500100STJ.16.021.7725 Jerzy Kroczak Jews in New Athens by Benedykt Chmielowski* Abstract: Benedykt Chmielowski (1700–1763), a Catholic priest, the author of the New Athens encyclopedia (extended edition: Lwów, 1754–1756) included in his polyhistorical work plenty of information on issues related to Jews. The article discusses these issues and connects their specificity with the character of different parts of the work in which Chmielowski placed them as well as with the detected and secret sources of his knowledge about Jews (especially books by early mod- ern scholars) and the ways he dealt with those sources. The author of the article also shows Chmielowski’s writing strategies, placing New Athens in the tradition of baroque encyclopedism—a literary production typical of the previous epoch. Education for social justice and social action today FOREWORD The address of Father Pedro Arrupe to the "Tenth International Congress of Jesuit Alumni of Europe," in Valencia, Spain, on July 31, 1973, has already been published in French, Spanish and Italian. The address caused a stir because it called with insistence for change. Continuing education for social justice poses no threat while it remains on the level of abstract theory. Father Arrupe brings doctrine to bear on the personal lives of all who hear him. To accept what he has to say is to accept and work for change in one's own manner of life and environment - not an easy thing at all. Words like "radical" have been used about this address. That word is not hard to accept if it means going to the root of the matter and the discourse is indeed radical, as is the teaching of Pope Paul VI in Populorum Progressio and Octogesima Adveniens. The words of Father Arrupe were addressed to alumni, but they apply to all of us who need education or more likely re-education for social justice and social action today. In 1973, this address was delivered to a group of Jesuit high school alumni who were predominantly male. chapter 15 Religion, the Cosmos, and Counter-Reformation Latin: Athanasius Kircher’s Itinerarium exstaticum (1656) Jacqueline Glomski Itinerarium exstaticum was one of only two works of imaginative literature1 written by the Jesuit polymath Athanasius Kircher (1601/02–80), whose oeuvre amounted to more than thirty books, the topics of which ranged from magnet ism to Egyptian hieroglyphics.2 Published in 1656, when Kircher’s intellectual authority was at its height, the Itinerarium exstaticum tells the story of a voyage into the cosmos as a dialogue between Theodidactus, a human, and his guide, an angel called Cosmiel. But while the Itinerarium exstaticum has been mined by historians of science for its discussion of astronomy and its theory of the origins and functioning of the universe, this dialogue has never been studied as an interesting work of neoLatin literature. Indeed, Kircher’s dialogue can be classified as cosmic fiction; and it is a story that contains a rich blend of literary elements and that makes an important contribution to the body of fiction written in Latin in the seventeenth cen tury. The Itinerarium exstaticum combines certain features of Baroque liter ary art (such as a florid style, a blurred perception of reality, and an appeal to the senses) with reminiscences of the CounterReformation mystical tradition (including the Ignatian Exercitia spiritualia, and apocalyptic and Solomonic writings). It also harks back to the latehumanist genre of the somnium satyr- icum, because of its dream framework, biting humour, and heterodox view point. Conclusion Bibliography Desenpjano or disillusionment with the world is a recurrent theme in seventeenth century Spanish literature. It appears in all genres: prose fiction, poetry, and drama. Preoccupation with the theme of desen.^ano represents a sincere concern—a reflection of deeply felt problems— rather than merely a literary affectation. In the drama of the seventeenth century this somber note becomes accen- tuated as the century progresses. In the writings of Pedro Calderon de la Barca and playwrights of his cycle the treatment of the theme of desengano is more frequent than in the works of earlier playwrights like Lone de Vega and his contemporaries. Desenfrafib is not contempt for the world; rather, it is disillusionment or disenchantment with the world. For the ascetic or the mystic, life on earth is a transitory state. It is a moment of testing and preparation for eternity. While on earth man can speculate with the talents entrusted to him; he can attempt to fulfill his nurpose in life.
