(Valentina Marcheselli) 1 Abstract This thesis presents an ethnographic study of the repertoires, sets of social and material practices, that scientists adopt to practice and promote the search for life in the universe, commonly known today under the disciplinary label of astrobiology. In particular, I take the expression “life as-we-don’t-know-it” as an entry point to look into the role of non- knowledge as a cultural resource in the opening of new spheres of inquiry. Throughout this thesis, I investigate the tensions and negotiations related to the definition of life, a central issue in astrobiology, and the way scientists are successfully shifting the boundaries of what is considered legitimate science to include the study of extra-terrestrial lifeforms. Unlike most previous work on the definition of life, this thesis does not formulate or support any definition and does not take a position on the question of to which disciplinary domain “life” legitimately belongs – on the contrary, it takes definitions and disciplines as social institutions with flexible boundaries. To explore these issues, I engaged in a multi-sited ethnographic study that brought me to the different locations in which astrobiologists’ activities take place, from conference venues to astronomical observatories, laboratories and field sites (such as underground caves and Icelandic volcanoes), following the lines of research that today form, at their intersections, the field of astrobiology. Life “as-we-don’t-know-it” soon emerged as a central theme in contemporary astrobiology. A commonly used phrase for extra-terrestrial and alien life, it summarizes and stands for the uncertainties and unknowns surrounding the definition of life and the design of life-detection experiments. These unknowns about life are not simply a void to be filled, but the result of a process of social construction, a collective achievement. This empirical account complements and challenges existing literature about scientific change and knowledge production by focusing on the construction of a collective agreement about not-knowing and its deployment as a specific research repertoire. The concept of repertoire is a useful thinking tool for the sociologist looking into astrobiology and its social dynamics because it does not describe change as fundamentally caused and shaped by theoretical developments. On the contrary, it both takes account of the material and institutional changes that accompany, ground or undermine the emergence of a research field and calls for consideration of the performative aspects of science. I conclude by arguing that the agreement on what constitutes life – familiar and alien, Earthly or otherworldly – is an ongoing negotiation between astrobiologists’ epistemic practices and what counts as a meaningful present and future for space exploration. This opens up a space for sociological inquiry about the particular social processes through which the emergence of astrobiology as a discipline requires collaborations to be established, allows for new interactions, and evokes previously unforeseen associations, thus constantly unsettling present imaginaries about the future. 2 Acknowledgments I would like to express my most sincere gratitude to Jane Calvert and Alice Street for their insightfulness, patience and motivation.     INTRODUCTION 9 GUEST EDITORIAL: MY FORMATIVE YEARS WITH THE RASC BY SARA SEAGER I first learned about astronomy as a small child. One of my first memories is looking through a telescope at the Moon. I was completely stunned by what I saw. The Moon— huge and filled with craters—was a world in and of itself. I was with my father, at a star party hosted by the RASC. Later, when I was 10 years old and on my first camping trip, I remember awakening late one night, stepping outside the tent, and looking up. Stars—millions of them it seemed—filled the entire sky and took my breath away. As a teenager in the late 1980s, I joined the RASC Toronto Centre and deter- minedly attended the bimonthly Friday night meetings held in what was then the Planetarium building. Much of the information went over my head, but I can still clearly remember the excitement of the group whenever a visiting professor presented on a novel topic. An RASC member offered a one-semester evening class on astron- omy, and we were able to use the planetarium to learn about the night sky. The RASC events were a highlight of my high school and undergraduate years. While majoring in math and physics at the University of Toronto, I was thrilled to intern for two summers at the David Dunlap Observatory (DDO). I carried out an observing program of variable stars (including Polaris, the North Star), using the 61-cm (24″) and 48-cm (19″) telescopes atop the DDO’s administration building for simultaneous photometry of the target and comparison stars.

A very early, permanent base can support scientific investigations more cost effectively and safer then a series of round-trip missions, because about half of the mission cost can be saved by eliminating most return spacecraft, fuel manufacture, and consumables. Instead of focusing on how a single technology can be applied, we look at the broad view of all the needed structures and materials to construct an initial base and growing settlement. We concentrate on the materials and architectural design of the first phase of development which will support 12 persons. A preliminary design, the “Hillside Base”, has been completed. We assume that 12 people will deploy, bootstrap, and maintain small, semi-automated refining and manufacturing facilities. Using locally produced fiberglass, metal, ceramics, and simple plastics, they then construct permanent quarters for themselves. This Hillside Base includes living quarters, workshops, greenhouses, maintenance facilities, waste processing, refining, manufacturing, and other areas needed to live and work. After they move into their completed quarters, they continue construction for an additional dozen people, mostly scientists, who arrive about every two and a half years.

As part of that reconsideration, a workshop on “Concepts and Approaches for Mars Exploration” was held at the USRA Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston, TX, on June 12‐14, 2012. Details of the meeting, including abstracts, video recordings of all sessions, and plenary presentations, can be found at http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meetings/marsconcepts2012/. Participation in the workshop included scientists, engineers, and graduate students from academia, NASA Centers, Federal Laboratories, industry, and international partner organizations. Attendance was limited to 185 participants in order to facilitate open discussion of the critical issues for Mars exploration in the coming decades. As 390 abstracts were submitted by individuals interested in participating in the workshop, the Workshop Planning Team carefully selected a subset of the abstracts for presentation based on their appropriateness to the workshop goals, and ensuring that a broad diverse suite of concepts and ideas was presented.

From HGD, the dark matter of galaxies is H-He gas dominated planets (primordial-fog-particle PFPs) in million solar mass clumps (protoglobularstar- cluster PGCs), which formed at the plasma to gas transition temperature 3000 K. Stars result from mergers of these hot-gas-planets. Over-accretion causes stars to explode as supernovae that scatter life-chemicals (C, N, O, P, S, Ca, Fe etc.) to other planets in PGC clumps and beyond. These chemicals were first collected gravitationally by merging PFPs to form H-saturated, high-pressure, dense oceans of critical-temperature 647 K water over iron-nickel cores at ~ 2 Myr. Stardust fertil- izes the formation of first life in a cosmic hot-ocean soup kitchen comprised of all planets and their moons in meteoric communication, > 10100 kg in total. Ocean freezing at 273 K slows this biologi- cal big bang at ~ 8 Myr. HGD cosmology confirms that the evolving seeds of life are scattered on intergalactic scales by Hoyle-Wickramasinghe cometary panspermia.
