REGISTRATION RULES & REGULATIONS

REQUIREMENTS FOR REGISTRATION:

All application forms and schedule of fees are available on the Equine Performance Registry of Australia website: www.equineperformanceregistry.com

1. Certificates

Registration is a means of identification, to establish ownership for competition and/or sale purposes and if need be, proof of identification. Registration certificates do not represent legal proof of ownership. They are issued for EPRA purposes only on information provided by members of the EPRA.

All paperwork lodged must be accompanied by the correct fees. a) Lodgment of paperwork will only be accepted from a financial member of the EPRA at time of lodgment. Application and all details thereon shall be completed and/or signed by the owner, including the full name, address and signature of the owner, or owners. b) Any application can be refused by the EPRA. The EPRA is not obliged to give any reasons for refusal. c) Registration may be cancelled or revoked if information is determined to be false or mis-representation of such . d) EPRA encourages safe breeding practices, factsheets are available on our website for downloading to assist in creating awareness and better understanding to our members of inherited genetic traits, undesirable characteristics and common horse health issues. e) The owner must advise the EPRA of any errors within 30 days of processing, with identification or anomalies that are inconsistent with the application.

2. Correction or Alteration to Certificates

Correction or Alteration of any original registration certificate can be obtained upon written application from the owner or leasee, provided that: a) The EPRA approves the alteration.

b) The owner or leasee provides information as may be required to ensure that the correction or alteration is valid. c) All corrections or alterations must be made by the EPRA. d) Any certificate which has been altered in any way without authorisation by EPRA is liable to cancellation.

The Equine Performance Registry of Australia is a registry that accommodates DNA parent verified and optional reported genetic disorders in all breeds of . Registration also allows members to establish a portfolio for their performance horse/s, which increases value and marketability of those horse/s within the industry.

3. For a horse to be considered for the Equine Performance Registry it must: a) Be a , or a gelding. b) Have DNA on file and is Parent Verified through a testing facility accepted by the EPRA. DNA markers and registration certificate must be provided on application to EPRA, if the horse is already registered and parent verified with another breed society/association. c) Genetic testing and inherited defects results will be disclosed on the registration certificate stating negative, carrier, or afflicted as reported from a testing facility accepted by the EPRA. d) All optional genetic testing conducted at time of registration, remains property of the registered owner until change over ownership takes place and EPRA are advised of such change. e) Breeding certification has been completed on the registration application or has been lodged by the stallion owner at time of service, if applying for a new horse registration.

4. All horses accepted into the Equine Performance Registry will: a) Receive a numerical number and detailed three (3) generation pedigree with reference to both sire and dam using breeding codes listed on the registration certificate (see glossary below). b) Be eligible to compete in a wide range of performance classes and recognition towards EPRA annual national and state high point awards.

5. Horses Imported into Australia: a) EPRA will accept an application for registration for Horses Imported into Australia if a copy of the DNA markers, parent verification and any genetic test results are received with the application. b) Owner must be a full financial member of EPRA and must be the name listed on the registration certificate issued by relevant breed society/association.

c) Horses accepted as an Import will be registered with the same name as that recorded with the breed society/association and will have the letters relevant to country of origin, for example USA, NZL, CAN, JPN, as well IMP after its name.

6. for Imported Semen: a) EPRA will accept an application for a stallion to be registered for Imported Semen if the stallion is registered with an overseas breed society/association. b) A copy of the original registration certificate is lodged with the application. c) Owner must be a full financial member of EPRA and must be the name listed on the registration certificate issued by relevant breed society/association. d) A copy of the DNA markers, parent verification and any genetic test results are received with the application.

A stallion accepted for Imported Semen will be registered with the same name as that recorded with the breed society/association and will have the letters relevant to country of origin for example USA, NZL, CAN, JPN, as well as IS (Imported Semen) after its name.

7. Horses Imported in Utero or Horses born En Route to Australia: a) EPRA will accept an application for registration for Horses Imported in Utero or Horses born En Route to Australia if a copy of the DNA markers, parent verification and any genetic test results are received with the application. b) Horses accepted as Imported in Utero will be registered with the same name as that recorded with the breed society/association and will have the letters relevant to country of origin for example USA, NZL, CAN, JPN, as well as well IIU after its name.

NB: Breeding practices including, but not limited to Frozen Embryo and Imported Frozen Oocyte, Domestic/Imported Retained Semen Permits, Domestic Embryo Permits, Domestic Oocyte Permits please contact Equine Performance Registry for further information.

8. Horses produced by Cloning: a) EPRA will accept an application for registration for Horses produced by Cloning, or progeny of a Clone if a copy of the DNA markers, parent verification and any genetic test results are received with the application. b) Owner must be a full financial member of EPRA and must be the name listed on the registration certificate issued by relevant breed society/association/registry. A copy of the donor’s registration certificate, as well as any DNA and cloning reports/documents for the donor must be provided. c) The combination of Genetic Marker Report and mitochondrial DNA sequence report will be used to show that the application for registration submitted for such Clone is in fact a clone.

d) Horses accepted as a Clone will be registered with the same name as that recorded with the breed society/association/registry and will have the letters relevant to country of origin, for example USA, NZL, CAN, JPN, as well C after its name.

9. Horses of Unknown Breeding: a) EPRA will accept an application for registration for horses with all unknown breeding if the horse has DNA on file and optional genetic test results are received or requested with the application. b) EPRA requires four quality photos of the horse to accompany the registration application: one front, one , and one of each side. This media becomes property of EPRA and will not be returned to you. c) EPRA will include one quality photo onto the horse’s registration certificate.

10. Forebearers:

Forebearers are the sire and dam of progeny that have been accepted for EPRA registration, a) As an imported horse; b) For imported semen; c) As born in Utero; d) As born en route to Australia; e) Referenced according to EPRA breed codes; f) Referenced as unknown breeding.

NB: Forebearers are not registered with the EPRA.

11. Undesirable Characteristics:

The number and degree of undesirable characteristics, and/or defects present in a horse, will determine whether it is acceptable to the EPRA for registration. Including but not limited, too Umbilical Hernia, Cryptorchid or Monorchid, Overshot or Undershot Jaw and Parrot Mouth.

12. Age of A Horse:

The age of a horse will be calculated on the basis of a breeding calendar year starting 1st August every year. For example, a horse foaled any time between 1st August, 2016 and 31st July, 2017 (weanling) for the breeding records the foal is a 2016 born horse. It is considered to be one (1) year old on 1st August, 2017 (yearling) and two (2) years old on 1st August, 2018.

13. Name of A Horse:

Each horse will be given a name by the owner acceptable to the EPRA.

a) If the horse is not registered, three (3) name choices must be provided for selection by EPRA and the name cannot exceed 25 characters, including spaces. b) The name of a horse once registered will not be changed. c) Numerals and any form of punctuation are not acceptable in a name.

14. Colouring:

Any misdescribed or inaccurately described horse is liable to be deregistered.

Any horse possessing a body colour listed below, but having 75% of their body covered with white hairs will have the word ‘’ after the colour of the horse.

Four (4) quality photos of the horse must accompany the registration application: one front, one back, and one of each side. These may be printed photos, on a flash drive or emailed to [email protected]

This media becomes property of EPRA and will not be returned to you.

Only the following colours, pattern/characteristics, markings will be accepted by the EPRA:

15. Markings of A Horse:

Apron Face: Bald that extends down over muzzle to the throat.

Medicine Hat: An unusual type of colouring where the horse has dark ears and poll but surrounded on all sides of the head and neck by white.

Star: A small white marking on the forehead.

Crescent Star: An irregular star marking, that does not have a straight path.

Stripe: A narrow marking extending vertically in the area between the forehead and the nostrils.

Snip: Any marking between the two nostrils.

Star and Stripe: A marking on the forehead with a stripe to the nasal peak. The stripe does not have to be an extension of the star.

Star, Snip and Blaze: A marking on the forehead with a narrow extension to the nasal peak and opening up again between the nostrils.

Connected Star, Snip, Blaze: A connected marking on the forehead with a narrow extension to the nasal peak and opening up again between the nostrils.

Lip: Usually described by location, such as white on lower lip or chin.

Bald Face: A very broad blaze. It can extend out and around the eyes and it can extend down to the upper lip and around the nostrils.

Blaze: A vertical marking of medium, uniform width extending the length of the face.

Partial Coronet: Partial white stripe covering coronet.

Coronet: Any narrow marking continuing around the coronet above the hoof.

Half : A marking which includes only half the pastern above the coronet.

Full Pastern: A marking which includes the entire pastern.

Sock: White marking that extends higher than the fetlock but not as high as the knee or hock.

Stocking: White marking that extends at least to the bottom of the knee or hock.

High Stocking: White marking that extends higher than the knee or hock.

Fetlock: A white marking that extends to and covers the fetlock.

Partial Fetlock: A white marking that extends to covering only a portion of the fetlock.

Pastern & Stripe: A white marking which includes the entire pastern and a narrow marking extending vertically towards the fetlock.

16. Breeding Certification:

To lodge breeding certificates, the owner of the stallion must a financial EPRA member.

The EPRA official Breeding Certification must: a) List the registered name and registration number (if applicable) of all bred, stating type of service, i.e. Natural, AI, Embryo. b) If artificially inseminated, list the date of insemination as the service date. c) If naturally served, list the first date and last date mare was served. d) If pasture bred, list the date mare is introduced into the paddock and the date mare is removed from the paddock.

If breeding certificates are to be signed by a person other than the owner, whose name appears on the EPRA records, then a Signatory Authorisation form must be on file for the breeding certificates to be accepted.

17. Signatory Authorisation:

A person acting as agent or on behalf of a horse owner/s must also be a full financial member of EPRA to sign and lodge paperwork. This must be done writing on the signatory authorisation form available for download on our website and lodged to EPRA.

18. Sire Registration:

A stallion must have its certificate of registration upgraded as having completed the Sire Registration process prior to the first service taking place.

The owner of the stallion must submit the following to the EPRA for consideration: a) the stallion’s original registration certificate. b) a fully completed Sire Registration form signed by a registered veterinarian certifying that the details contained in the form are true and correct.

19. Deceased/Incapable Stallion:

If a stallion dies or is otherwise rendered incapable of breeding, his frozen semen can be used indefinitely providing all requirements of the stallion have previously been met. There are no limitations to the period the semen can be stored or utilised after the death or gelding of a stallion. Should the stallion be sold, die or be gelded, the EPRA must be notified by the registered owner.

20. Brands:

Branding is not compulsory. If you decide to brand your horse it is necessary to comply with State Legislation requirements. Branding can either be freeze brand or hot brand. Brands are drawn onto the diagrams of the application for registration.

21. Other Forms of Identification:

All horses to be accepted for registration into the EPRA must be visibly identifiable. Microchips are also acceptable as secondary identification. All visible scars and whorls must be identified on the application for registration.

22. Gelding Status:

A registered stallion, that has been gelded, will have their records amended upon request: a) The EPRA has been notified in writing that the horse has since been gelded. b) Notification can be submitted online and can only be submitted by the owner as per the EPRA records.

23. Gelding to Stallion:

If a stallion has been registered as a gelding, after an explanation in writing from the owner whom applied for registration, plus the original registration certificate has been returned to the EPRA for correction, a new certificate will be produced.

24. Lease Notification:

To have a lease recorded with the EPRA, the leasee of the horse must be a financial member of the EPRA.

The Lease Notification form must: a) Be lodged and completed online by both the Lessor and the Leasee and lodged before the Leasee has rights to the horse.

b) The Leasee of the horse is, for EPRA purposes, is deemed to be the owner of the horse for the period of the lease. c) The Lease Notification form must specify that the Leasee can show and/or breed the horse for a minimum of twelve (12) months and no more than two (2) years at which time a new Lease Notification form must be lodged. d) The EPRA recommends that the Lessor and the Leasee have a private lease contract. e) Notification that a lease has been cancelled must be signed by the Lessor and the Leasee. f) The EPRA may refuse any Notification of a Lease without assigning a reason.

25. Transfer and Bill of Sale Notification:

1. An authority for transfer form must: a) be completed in its entirety. b) provide the horses correct name and number. c) provide date of transfer. d) provide the name and address of transferee. e) be signed or lodged by the seller and the purchaser; and f) be forwarded together with the registration certificate of the horse.

2) To transfer a horse online, the following will apply: a) seller must fill out the Sellers section online and submit for processing. b) purchaser must fill out the Purchasers section online and submit for processing. c) the transfer fee must be paid online by either the Seller or Purchaser. d) the original registration certificate is to be forwarded to the EPRA. e) The EPRA will not give effect to the transfer until all paperwork and fees have been lodged. f) Foals at foot that are sold with their dams, are subject to a separate Transfer and Bill of Sale Notification form if they have been registered. g) Foals at foot that are unregistered and eligible for registration should be registered by the vendor in the name of the new owner. h) Purchasers who require their horses to be transferred must ensure that all transfer requirements have been met.
