  • 2012 MASTER ANGLER Highlights
2012 MASTER ANGLER Highlights Time once again to celebrate successful anglers in In-Fisherman’s Master Angler Awards Program. Since 1975, readers have submitted records of catches of North America’s most popular fish species, by mail and on the company website, in-fisherman.com. This year, the commit- tee granted 544 awards, a substantial increase from last year. Clearly, readers are enjoying the easy on-line application process. In In-Fisherman, we’ve been highlighting outstanding smallmouth bass fisheries and this species dominated the program with 88 lunkers. Largemouth bass followed (68), with pike (61), muskie (41), and rainbow/steelhead (36), and walleye (33) next. Muskie entries have never before topped those for walleyes. To find hot lakes and prime times to fish them, peruse these records. For example, Bob Daly of Indiana has con- sistently picked a prime time to target coho salmon in Alaska, bagging the two biggest this year as well as the larg- est one in 2011, all from the Cinder River. Anglers landed three pike of 50 inches or more, fish of a lifetime: one from Alaska, one from famous Reindeer Lake and one from Minnesota’s Boundary Waters Canoe Area. And speaking of massive toothies, consider Ryan Marjama’s 58½-inch muskie from Leech Lake, Minnesota, caught on a sucker rig! For the scoop on this deadly pre- sentation, check the new In-Fisherman Pike & Muskie Guide on news stands or available on our website. On a smaller scale, give props for Arthur Huttemeyer Sr.'s 31-inch pickerel from Lake Hopatcong in New Jersey.

  • Lake Mattamuskeet Frequently Asked Questions
1 Lake Mattamuskeet Frequently Asked Questions Since so many of these questions refer to monitoring activities in the Lake and Pamlico Sound, you may want to reference the following pages: o Summary of Lake Monitoring activities: http://nc.water.usgs.gov/projects/mattamuskeet/ o Summary of Bell Island Pier activities: http://www.arcgis.com/home/webmap/viewer.html?webmap=f52ab347d5e84ccc921b 75c34fea42d5&extent=-77.5214,34.7208,-75.2252,36.3212 1. How deep is the lake? Lake depth varies from a few inches to five feet, with an average depth ranging from two to three feet depending on the season. Water levels are deepest in late fall, winter, early spring and during years with above average rainfall due to evaporation and precipitation. The deepest portions are located in the northwest portion of the lake. (see bathymetric map below). You can access the current water levels by visiting the USGS website (East and West) for Lake Mattamuskeet. Updated 10/12/16 2 2. Why is the lake so high/low? Lake levels fluctuate on a daily, seasonal and yearly basis. Water levels are primarily determined by climatic conditions. Generally, seasonal lake levels follow a pattern of being lower in the summer due to high evaporation rates and higher in fall, winter and spring due to lower evaporation rates and greater precipitation. Lake levels will increase by a few inches after a heavy rain. During wet years with lots of precipitation, water levels will rise; during drought years, water levels will fall. You can access current water levels by visiting the USGS website for Lake Mattamuskeet (East and West).

Location: Enclave, East Cape Province, South Africa Republic of South Africa Government: Self-governing tribal Transvaal homeland Area: 16,910 sq. mi. Swaziland Population: 2,876,122 (1985) Capital: Umtata Orange Natal Free The World’s First Fishing Fly Stamps State Cape Province Lesotho Building a Business in South Africa In 1976, Mr. Barry Kent, his partners, and the Republic of Transkei Development Corporation built a fishing fly manufacturing Eastern Cape plant at Butterworth, Transkei, South Africa. Transkei Western Cape The company, named High Flies Ltd., was one of the most modern fishing-fly manufacturing plants in the world. Pricing, quality and clever product marketing proved to be very successful. By 1979 High Flies was employing more than 350 labor-intensive Transkeians, producing over 1,000 dozen flies each day. These flies are used mainly in fly-fishing for trout and salmon. The entire production was exported to countries where these fish are prolific: America, the British Isles, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Scandinavia, and other European countries. An idea for promoting other Transkei industries was created by depicting fishing flies on postage stamps. The outcome produced a series of five sheets for each year from 1980 through 1984. Each sheet contains five different fly patterns arranged in se-tenant format. Although the last issue of these stamps appeared in 1984, the factory closed in 1983 due to a corrupt business partner and poor management by the South African/Republic of Transkei Development Corporation bureaucrats. Mr. Kent, along with approximately 390 local workers lost their jobs. Philatelic Specifications Designer: A. H.
